9. edicaticut The 1948 Index Board confers honor on itself, on the members of the Class of 1948, and on the man, in its decision to dedicate this volume to Acting President Ralph Albert Van Meter. Men who serve in acting capacities frequently take the opportunity of continuing poli- cies established by their predecessors and may not have to face problems of other than rou- tine nature. However, such has not been true of Dr. Van Meter. Called upon to serve as Acting President for several short periods when President Hugh P. Baker was on leave or on vacation, and again to guide the University un til President Baker ' s successor was appointed, he has not blindly followed the path of routine procedure and has proved himself equal to the tasks miposed upon him. As liaison executive between the College and the 58th Civilian Training Detachment, he organized and directed the educational program on the campus in such an excellent manner that the College received the certificate which now hangs in the President ' s office, luch credit is due to Dr. Van Meter for the success of this program in which he received the assistance and cooperation of numerous members of the staff. Dr. Van Meter was serving as Acting President during the period of organization of the Massachusetts State College at Fort Devens, a gigantic task to be completed in a few short months. In the development of this project the manifestation of his qualities of sound judg- ment, clear thinking, positive action, and strong personality made it obvious that here was a man who would make a desirable and effective president. His active support of, and participation in the successful campaign for university status has endeared Dr. Van Meter to many undergraduates and alumni. Now, as Acting President of the University, in its infancy and period of rapid expansion of student body, staff, build- ings and equipment, he is laying a firm foundation for that man who will some day succeed to the position of the presidency.
