Ed vin Miles f umiier ' I HE college had just received a new name, and a new spirit pervaded the cam- • pus. Heads were held high and no man neglected an opportunity to make known the fact that he belonged to Massachusetts State College. From whence came this new spirit and high student morale? From change of name? Yes, but that is not the whole story. The best college band in years. New songs and new marches. The State College Band on the air over WBZ. At last the state and the nation were made distinctly aware of the existence of this college. Who fostered this awakening? There must have been leaders somewhere; behind all great awakenings there are to be found leaders even though they may be very much in the background to the casual observer. I wish to introduce to you one of these leaders, Edwin Miles Sumner, Captain of Cavalry, United States Army, who was serving his second detail in our Military Department. The College Administration recognized his value to the college and requested the War Department to extend his detail. Captain Sumner as leader of the band, author of a new college march, and true friend of the college had endeared himself to the whole student body. He was the source of much that has transpired to make a new college on this campus. In dedicating this book to Edwin Miles Sumner, the Class of 1933 gives well- earned recognition to a real gentleman and a true friend of the college. CURRY S. HICKS
