Clieinist and manager of a Philadelphia Sugar Refinery, traveling extensively in Cuba and the South in the interests of tlie Sugar Industry, 1857-61. Chemist to Onondaga Salt Companj ' , 1861- 68; during that time investigating the salt resources of the United States and Canada. Professor of Chemistry, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1862-64. Director Massa- chusetts Agricultural Experiment Station, 1882-94. Professor of Chemistry, Massa- chusetts Agricultural College, since 1868. Since 1884 has been Analyst of State Board of Health.
