Si ont. Xcojt ' r ?Mo5ofhe.r; Mae I C n ' n enTor The Alumni of the 60 ' s will long remember the dynamic and superb lectures of Dr. Vernon W. Stone in the Department of Business and Eco- nomics. Their esteem for Dr. Stone so penetrated their lives, they decided to establish a scholarship fund in his honor. Spearheaded by Faith Stevens and other local alumni, the dream became a reality on May 19, 1984 when Dr. Stone, his wife, and daughter flew in from Atlanta, Georgia for the banquet in his honor and to formally establish the Vernon W. Stone Schol- arship. It was like the old days - a room full of alumni, old and new faculty, community well-wishers, all relishing every word of this great educator. The atmosphere was moist with love and fond memories. It was as if the 60 ' s had returned to UMES. First Scholarship Recipient, Mr Warren Wood Art for the Humanist FOND MEMORIES! Perry The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bes- towed an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree upon Cynthia Shepard Perry in recognition of her out- standing accomplishments with the Peace Corps, the U.S. Information Services, and with AID. She presently holds a key international appointment un- der the authorization of Vice-President Bush, the title being Chief, Education and Human Resources Division, Bureau of Africa, Agency for International Development. The UMES campus is one of the affili- ates of AID, working in several major research pro- jects in Agriculture, including exchange of faculty and students. Ms Alice G. Pinderhughes The University of Maryland Eastern Shore recog- nized a well-known Maryland educator in the person of Alice G. Pinderhughes, Superintendent of Balti- more City Public Schools. Recognition was long overdue, for Alice Pinderhughes has spent many, many years in the education of youth, both as a teacher and as a supervisor. She knows the inuen- does of an excellent educational system and because of her concern for youth and their future, many Baltimoreans have passed through our doors. For this reason and for the many innovations she has spearheaded in education, the University bestowed upon her the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. Dr. Vernon W. Stone A Doctor of Letters Degree was very appropriate- ly bestowed upon Dr. Vernon W. Stone for his many years of excellence in the field of education and the arts. For those who had the pleasure of sitting under his tutelage the memory will never be forgotten. His talent was not just in the classroom, but spanned many areas of expertise. At present, Dr. Stone is Professor of Education in the College of Education at Georgia State University. 1 AN HONOR DESERVED GRADUATES ' 84 CANDID MOVING TOWARD THE CENTENNIAL IN 1986 SPECIAL THANKS It is pleasant to be at this point in the production of the Yearbook. Only you who have worked with Yearbooks can appreciate the feeling. So you read and critique our re- sults, think first of the time and hard work that was invest- ed by a small staff of faithfuls , namely, Stephanie, Eric, Dave, Kimberly, Larry, and D.A., before you crunch on us too extensively. Remember, Yearbooks are a labor of love and a patriotic concern for the image of our Universi- ty. Our pay for this effort is the end product - the Year- book. I am most appreciative to Mr. Thomas Wiles for his patience with us and the students during the photography sessions, and to Ms. Dorothy Waters our advisor for her work with the final product. If you like what you have viewed, we will be happy, if you don ' t we understand. Criticism gives reason for im- provement and facets for the ' 85 editor to work upon. So best wishes to the new editor; you will need it. Sincerely, Karen A. Powell Editor 1983-84 IN MEMOR Y OF LORRAINE ,.,,.- 1 „. H. While she was here she shed light on our years, And while she is gone many of us shed our tears. The place seems strange without you But in your memory, we shall pursue All those dreams we held so true She left so unexpectedly. Author Unknown AUTOGRAPHS
