iiizrfciucrk Us a ljook J EaiacLiion Clifton J. Anderson 1929-1979 Cappy , as he was known to his many friends, was born November 25, 1929 to the late Howard and Mary Page Anderson. He was educated in the public schools of Cape May, New Jersey, graduating from Cape May High School. At a very young age he was noted for his ath- letic ability while receiving accolades as an outstanding football and track star. He attended Indiana University at Bloomington on football and track scholarships. While there he set University records in track and was outstanding in the sport of football. After graduation from Indiana, he had an abbreviated but brilliant football career with the Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. After his stint in professional football, Cappy returned to Indiana where he earned his Masters Degree in Physical Education.

Cappy moved to Shaw University in North Carolina where he served as head football coach. During his stay at Shaw, he produced several powerful Central Intercollegiate Ath- letic Association teams. In 1960 he was attracted to the former Maryland State College at Princess Anne, Maryland now UMES. He served as head track and defensive line coach for football. A host of champi- ons and championships were molded by the hands of this great coach and educator. Olympic stars, Benedict Cayenne and Charlie Mays, along with Russ Rogers, Robert Brown and many others had the privilege of competing under his tutelage. Coach Anderson remained at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore until his death, Friday, March 16, 1979 at 1:10 p.m. in the Peninsula General Hospital Medical Center following a long illness. Just this academic year, Cappy was named as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education. Over the years. Coach Anderson was one of the most respected coaches on the UMES campus. He sent many players to the pros. CLIFTON 1. ANDERSON. SR. WAS A PROFESSIONAL MAN. In addition to his many campus activities Coach Anderson, was a member of the Metropol- itan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne; he was also a member of several profes- sional organizations including long-time membership in the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Twice, while at UMES he was cited as Coach of the Year, once in 1968 and again in 1978. The student body recognized him in 1968 by bestowing upon him the Teacher of the Year award. He will be long remembered for his vivacious spirit and cheerful attitude, as well as his strong determination to compete, no matter what the odds may have been. Cappy shall for- ever live in the memories of all those who knew him, as a great example of one who would not give up, even though the task often seemed to be insurmountable.
