Anderson 1929-1979 Cappy , as he was known to his many friends, was born November 25, 1929 to the late Howard and Mary Page Anderson. He was educated in the public schools of Cape May, New Jersey, graduating from Cape May High School. At a very young age he was noted for his ath- letic ability while receiving accolades as an outstanding football and track star. He attended Indiana University at Bloomington on football and track scholarships. While there he set University records in track and was outstanding in the sport of football. After graduation from Indiana, he had an abbreviated but brilliant football career with the Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. After his stint in professional football, Cappy returned to Indiana where he earned his Masters Degree in Physical Education. Cappy moved to Shaw University in North Carolina where he served as head football coach. During his stay at Shaw, he produced several powerful Central Intercollegiate Ath- letic Association teams. In 1960 he was attracted to the former Maryland State College at Princess Anne, Maryland now UMES. He served as head track and defensive line coach for football. A host of champi- ons and championships were molded by the hands of this great coach and educator. Olympic stars, Benedict Cayenne and Charlie Mays, along with Russ Rogers, Robert Brown and many others had the privilege of competing under his tutelage. Coach Anderson remained at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore until his death, Friday, March 16, 1979 at 1:10 p.m. in the Peninsula General Hospital Medical Center following a long illness. Just this academic year, Cappy was named as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education. Over the years. Coach Anderson was one of the most respected coaches on the UMES campus. He sent many players to the pros. CLIFTON 1. ANDERSON. SR. WAS A PROFESSIONAL MAN. In addition to his many campus activities Coach Anderson, was a member of the Metropol- itan United Methodist Church in Princess Anne; he was also a member of several profes- sional organizations including long-time membership in the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Twice, while at UMES he was cited as Coach of the Year, once in 1968 and again in 1978. The student body recognized him in 1968 by bestowing upon him the Teacher of the Year award. He will be long remembered for his vivacious spirit and cheerful attitude, as well as his strong determination to compete, no matter what the odds may have been. Cappy shall for- ever live in the memories of all those who knew him, as a great example of one who would not give up, even though the task often seemed to be insurmountable. Together they made things happen; the offense moved the ball for more yardage, and scored more points too. The defense was strong, but they suffered some early injuries that they felt all season. ONE OF LIFE ' S ' ' KEYS TO SUCCESS Debra is a Senior, concentrating in the area of Biological Sciences. This is her third year working with the staff in full capacity. This year, you will notice a num- ber of changes in the style and print of THE HAWK: most of these changes were implemented by Debra, serving in the position of Editor-in-chief. Dear Members of the HA WK family: lam quite happy to be able to say that this year ' s edition o THE HAWK has been a success! Understandably, not everyone is as satisfied with this edition as lam. It has been a pleasure working in the capacity of Editor-in-chief; and I would like to extend thanks to those of you who have made this yearbook possible: Ms. Dorothy Waters, advisor; Mr. Thomas Wiles, photographer; Mr. Floyd Blackett, student photographer; Renee Tuggle, underclassman section; Ms. Alverta Jones, faculty section; Hein Ngo, cover design, and the many others. To the individuals whose pictures did not appear in this edition, as an oversight on my part, please forgive me for my default. But, to the many individuals who refused, for whatever reason, to have a photograph taken, be adult enough to take the time and responsibility to cooperate with the next yearbook staff, it will eliminate the headache of hearing you complain after the book is published. Despite the few obstacles and hardships, I can honestly say that serving as editor for this edition of THE HAWK has been a unique and fulfilling experience. Respectfully, Debra A.
