HISTORY UMES has had several names in its ' history. Under the control of the Centenary Biblical Institute, the branch known as The Deleware Conference Academy was founded on Sep- tember 13, 1886 with an enroll- ment of nine students. Records reveal that 37 students were enrolled by the end of the year. Subsequently, the Institution bore the title of Industrial Branch of Morgan State College, still under the influence of the Deleware Conference. As originally operat- ed by Morgan State College under the control of the Meth- odist Church, the institution was known as Princess Anne Academy. In 1948, the Eastern Shore Branch of the University of Mary- land, popularly known as Princess Anne College, became officially Maryland State College, a division of the University of Maryland. On July 1, 1970, Maryland State College became the Univer- sity of Maryland, Eastern Shore, and is still progressing toward a better tomorrow. Coach Ralph Moses. NOT PICTURED- Coach Jackson This year UMES fielded its first Baseball team in two years. Getting off to a very late start, the Hawks salvaged a 7-10 record. The Hawk Baseball squad was young, inexperienced with limited pitching. The Hawks ' strong suite was hitting. They hit 11 homeruns in 17 games. First baseman-pitcher -Kirk Colbert led the hit parade with five HR ' s and sparkling play at both 1st base and on the mound. Cordell Dedmon, Preston Holden, along with Colbert, hit over 400. Avon Meecham was the most successful Pitcher in Early season play, posting two wins before suffering a back problem. Tony Walker also posted two wins. Anthony Waldo was the most consistent outfielder on the young Hawks ' squad. Other players who contributed to the team ' s success were: P-Designated Hitter Barry Jenifer, IB-Designated Hitter Maurier Winston who hit a game winning grand slam homer against Delaware State, Senior Ronnie Briggs, Gary Stewart, James Green, Johnny Taylor and Catcher Wallace Havden. UMES Marching Band The UMES band, as we know it today, has come a long way, thanks to our new Director-Rev. Martin.
