THE 1968 HAWK MARYLAND STATE COLLEGE PRINCESS ANNE, MARYLAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Valerie Watts Advisor Mr. Joseph Boyce Photography Mr. Thomas H. Wiles Publisher Hunter Publishing Co. SPIRO T. AGNEW Governor of Maryland Spiro Theodore Agnew was inaugurated as Maryland ' s 55th elected governor on January 25, 1967. He took office with several distinctions. He was the fifth Republican ever elected governor in this predominantly Democratic State; the first governor of Maryland to be born in this century; one of the youngest, at age 48, to hold the office; and the first American of Greek descent to become the chief executive of a State. Mr. Charles P. McCormick Chairman Dr. Louis L. Kaplan Assistant Secretary Mr. Edward F. Holter Vice-Chaimian Mr. Harry H. Nuttle Treasurer Dr. B. Herbert Brown Secretary Mr. Richard W. Case Assistant Treasurer THE BOARD OF REGENTS Dr. T.B. Symons Dr. Wilson H. Elkins Executive Officer k Dr. William B. Long Mr. Harry R. Boswell, Jr. 1% Mrs. Gerald D. Morgan Mr. George B. Newman WE LOVE THY TOWRING HALLS FOREWORD The 1967 Hawk has chronicled a measure of the river of passing events which are now history. Look carefully and you will see that this is a history of A time for hope in life; the hopes of men have been justly called working dreams . . . I have a dream ... A time for honor, decision, dedication, and determination in deeds, not words, for only action gives significance to life. This time is yesterday ' s tomorrow, and tomorrow has already dawned. The new dawn will be filled with beauty, promise, fulfillment and peace. TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION 8 ADMINISTRATION, STAFF AND FACULTY 9 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS 31 GREEK ORGANIZATIONS 51 ACTIVITIES 59 SPORTS 81 FRESHMEN CLASS 99 SOPHOMORE CLASS 107 JUNIOR CLASS 115 SENIOR CLASS 129 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In 1947, John Taylor Williams said, like Archimedes, If I had a place to stand, I could move the world of Maryland State College. Twenty-one years later, the President is standing firmly on his place. He has seen major and minor miracles of growth that moved miniscule Princess Anne College to an institution of strength, not only on the Shore but throughout the nation. Contributing to the strength have been quadrupling the enrolment; quadrupling the actual buildings; and multiplying efforts to build new levels of academic accomplishment; for example, making scholarly research a reality on the campus. The full measure of valor, wisdom, sweat, toil and perhaps heartache given into his first twenty-one years by the President may never be written. But the reward is in the lives of hundreds of men and women whom Maryland State College has trained to become responsible, respectably employed citizens — be they scientists, educators, technicians, home-makers, or professional athletes. Challenged by unparalleled, fast-moving events toward the twenty-first century, our President re- dedicates himself, in his twenty-second year, to the ideal of development of the individual. He re-states that the College was founded for the individual student, and that this truth will never change. DR. lOHN TAYLOR WILLIAMS PRESIDENT DEDICATION When one hears the peal of laughter and joy, all sorrows are forgotten. Smiling faces, warm hellos, and gleaming eyes make life wonderful to behold. But there is a place where souls are down-trodden and hardly is there gleam, laughter or joy. No echoes of laughter! No, just a mist of tears, for why would one smile when sickness, disease and wounds kill fast. No sun, no stars, no moon at all just mud and hills and gunshot sounds, death hews a ravaging path. Are these the sounds of victory, my friend, are these the signs of hope? Vietnam, in terms of distance today, is hardly far away from anyone ' s home. But to men who are like toy soldiers on the battlefield of death, in the woods of hell, or in the swamps of despair, home seems to be as far away as the sun. The situation in Vietnam today has enveloped the lives and futures of countless men, and altered, by death, the destinies of many. Barriers of hate are set between people and there are but very thin lines between caring, living, or dying. Our staff realizes the devoted involvement of our men in service of our country. We realize that their responsibilities are great and their job a very difficult one. Our tributes would be endless if we should endeavor to enumerate each noble virtue or accompHshment of these fighting men. Men of Maryland State College are also helping America ' s role in Vietnam. It is to these men from our campus we pay the highest tribute, and especially dedicate this yearbook. LOUIS M. HAYWARD 1943 - 1968 Viet Nam Hero MSC 1962 - 1965 HOW SLEEP THE BRAVE ADMINISTRATION STAFF AND FACULTY DR. HOWARD EMERY WRIGHT Dean of the College MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN You shall be remembered as the class significant in history. In 1968, a remarkable Civil Rights Bill was enacted fol- lowing the assassination of Martin Luther King. It is expected that each of you is now fully dedicated, having committed your life to a social, useful fulfillment. You will remember that your Alma Mater instituted a remarkable educational innovation which brought Educational Television and enlarged language laboratories, plus eminent visiting scholars as teachers. Your class initiated the program which we believe will make Maryland State College as famous academically as its illustrious Alumni has emblazoned her glory in the athletic firmament. Mrs. Violet J. This program has involved youngsters ranging in ages from seven (7) to twelve (12) years. At the beginning of the program The Tuttle Pulse Ratio Test of Cardio- Vascular Efficiency was administered. The results re- vealed that many of the children exhibited inefficient hearts in terms of recovery ability. Tliis probably indicates that their hearts are not operating efficiently as they might. In this connection many exercises are given that involve running. The basic program is centered around gymnastics and basketball. The youngsters are taught simple stunts on the mats and ele- mentary movements on the heavy apparatus. In basketball they are taught basic fundamentals of the game such as passing, drib- bling, catching, and shooting. They are also taught the basic techniques of defense as positions, stance, footwork, and hustle. There are sixty (60) children in the program; fifty-seven (57) boys and three (3) girls. Absences are very few. The youngsters seem to be enjoying their experiences more and more each week. Their progress has been remarkable. One of the most notable things is the selfconfidence gained by most of the boys. Instruction has been outstanding. There are three (3) professionals and seventeen (17) students on hand at all times. These students are majors in Physical Education who have demonstrated outstanding abilities. The ratio of students to instructors is 3 to 1. The children receive a great deal of individual attention. Dr. Juhus Thomas — Honors Convocation Speaker gave an ad- dress about the current state of labor relations. For the first time, Maryland State College participated in a New Career Opportunities Conference sponsored by the Nation- al Urban League. Several of the nation ' s largest corporations, manufacturers and government agencies were represented in the two-day series of meetings. Dr. William A. Lynk, Administrative Assistant to the President, co-ordinated the activities which con- sisted of addresses, group discussions, individual consultations, and interviews. All students had the opportunity of viewing the film, Do They Really Want Me? This is a film which challenges some of the myths about careers for Negroes: that college-educated Negroes can only expect to teach, preach, or heal, that because Negro colleges are second rate, their graduates had better get advanced degrees if they want to compete in the job market; that white employers are not really interested in hiring Negroes, and when they do .so it is only to comply with government regulations and to have a few Negroes on hand to showcase. The keynote speaker of the Conference was Dr. Ramon S. Scruggs, Information Officer with the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. 78 -PERFORMING ARTS Lionel Hampton in Concert and Dance Go Now Pay Later presented by The Judimar School of Dance directed by Marion Cuyjet. Led by AJl-Maryland Jake Ford and .Tim Mor- gan, The Hawks Basketball Team overcame one of the toughest schedules in the conference. They beat top nationally ranked teams such as Philadelphia Textile, Westminister, and Cheyney State. The team finished fifth in the CIAA, but did not make the tournament. The ' Hawks ' shot better than 55 ' ' from the floor and 75 ' c from the charity stripe. Jake Ford, in addition to his state leading 26.2 scoring norm, paced the CIAA for the second year running in free throws. Morgan, who led the CIAA in rebounding, also placed second nationally in the NAIA with a 23.3 average. Although the Havvk,s tailed to beat Arch-rival Morgan , the team compiled a 6-2 record. Ranking seventh in the nation among small college.s. The Maryland State Hawks averaged a line between 265 and 270 pounds. The Hawks were led offen.sively by Roy Kirskey and Thaddeus Stevens, the two leading ground gainers. The team was a fierce and mighty machine, stomping all opponents into oblivion. This is due to the wide range of talent scouted and contracted by Coach Sandy Gilliam and his staff. There has not been a single game played that AFL-NFL scouts have not watched from the bleachers. Maryland State ranks fourth in the nation among small colleges sending players to the pro ranks. This year ' s Hawks who turned pro are: James Duncan — Colts, Arthur Shell — Oakland Raiders, William Belk— 49 ' ers, Robert Taylor— Jets, Leonard Clay — Bengals, and Frankie Sumpter — Redskins. 85 The startiiin ciliensive frunt line Belk, Shell, Laster, Davis.
