Perhaps no figure on the Maryland State College campus commands the affection of the student body as does Jake. For nearly a quarter of a century he has served the college as Profes- sor of Languages, and until his accident in April, 1965, as Director of Public Relations and Placement. After six months of recuperation, Jake has returned to campus and can once again be seen making his way among his familiar haunts. A man of less energy might still be bedridden, but not Jake. A resident of near-by Camden and a native of Panama, the nation- ally known sports-writer and enthusiast is especially respected on the Eastern Shore. Having gradually regained his strength through the year, Jake is again his vigorous young self and is always ready to give vital information on most areas, art or athletic. Any moment with Jake is most rewarding. Ask him one day about the C Formation! The energetic educator has always taken the betterment of MSC as his predominant theme, and the college is a finer institution be- cause of his efforts. We wish that many future classes will benefit, as we did, from Jake ' s contagious good humor and friendly wisdom. PRESIDENT JOHN TAYLOR WILLIAMS MEMORIAM Dr. I. VARLEY, A.B., BD., Mth, Dth ENGLISH FROM ORIENTATION TO GRADUATION An old Indian story has it thus: When we are glorious i n our childish innocence, before we have met the world on its terms, all appears celestial, even as Wordsworth has said. Rivers are rivers, trees are trees, and moun- tains are mountains. When we have gained a certain substance of knowledge and again meet the world, sure, certain, contained, we are stunned at the sight and made dumb. Trees are no longer trees, nor are rivers still rivers, nor mountains simply mountains. However, we are told (again as Wordsworth has said, the child is father of the man) that when that middle darkness is passed, the spiritual glory suddenly reappears, and rivers are seen again to be rivers, trees once again are trees and mountains, still mountains. So it is that much of our sojourn, here has been clouded by our loss of innocence and lack of knowledge. Yet we have gained the mid- dle ground and have had glimpses of glory beyond. ALMA MATER To thee, Dear Alma Mater, We raise our grateful song, For through thy noble teachings Thou has made thy children strong; And thousand still shall praise thee. All earth shall hear their swell. And bind our hearts yet closer To thee we love so well. We love thy spacious campus. We love thy towering halls. And hallow ' d are the lessons We ' ve learned within thy walls. Stand thou forever glorious, Full-robed in living green; Shine thou in endless splendor Beneath thy trees serene. ■ v Refrain Maryland, Maryland, Home of Maroon and Gray; Maryland, Maryland, Thee we love always.
