The good life, we are told by our faculty, is the examined life. The good life, we are told by our deans, contains the search for spiritual and moral values as well as the striving for social grace. The good life is the joyous life, we tell ourselves in mements of relaxation. The good life is the directed life, we are told by the men and women who head our organizations. What gives dignity and meaning to life, we are told by the fast men of the track, football field, and basketball court, is excellence of technique in doing something that expresses life.
