By whatever criteria one seeks to answer this question, he can exempHfy them in the college environment. The good life, we are told by our faculty, is the examined life. The good life, we are told by our deans, contains the search for spiritual and moral values as well as the striving for social grace. The good life is the joyous life, we tell ourselves in mements of relaxation. The good life is the directed life, we are told by the men and women who head our organizations. What gives dignity and meaning to life, we are told by the fast men of the track, football field, and basketball court, is excellence of technique in doing something that expresses life. All these definitions contribute to a whole. Taken together, they present a variety that makes life full, exciting, challenging, confirming that what we will, hope, and dream of the good life can exist. The Hawk invites your perusal of aspects of the good life at Maryland State College in 1962-63. n. ' f «« ' n w HOMECOMING: 1962 This year marked the first time in the memory of loyal alumni and friends for a Homecoming crowd to see the mighty Hawks go down in defeat. A bitterly fought contest with a tough N.C.A. and T. opponent had excitement, color, thrills and glamor. Our largest reunion in a number of years brought back the grads and former students of some twenty to thirty years. A procession of fraternity sweethearts, class queens, and lovely girls from all over the Eastern Shore graced the floats; a swinging Homecoming dance ended a day to remember. With the aid of Aliceteen Young, Pat ElUs, and Bernice Washington, Miss Maryland State (Carolyn Thompson) prepared for the happiest day of her college career — her coronation. Christmas Parade in Salisbury: Miss Maryland State ' s float won a prize. All ht i ( , and all her daughters are beautiful. ' Miss Maryland State Dainty and petite (five feet two) Carolyn Thompson reigned with quiet distinction as Miss Maryland State during 1962. An English major with a winsome dimple, Carolyn likes to read, composes poetry, steps high with majorettes. Our girl out of Cam- bridge, Maryland, is in Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, a member of the Hawk staff, and for two years has been one of the BWOC chosen for Who ' s Who. She plans a career as a high school English teacher but thinks one should combine this one with marriage and a family. Dignity, ex- cellence in scholarship, and a desire to serve her fellow students make Miss MSC an exemplar of the good life at her alma mater. Rather overwhelmed by her good luck, a happy English major poses at foun- tain below steps of Library of Con- gress with Dean of American poets Langston Hughes following Mr. Hughes ' address at National Poetry Festival. Woman of the Year Bernice ' a.sliingtoii,a sen- ior with cute freckles and a shy grin, was women ' s choice for Women of the Year, a very popular choice indeed. A Business Edu ca- tion major, Bernice plans to teach. She has been in just about every organization there is on campus, and her kind heart, tact, and ability to lead unobtrusively have propelled her into positions of leadership everywhere — Women ' s Council, Delta Sigma Theta, Hayes Loan Fund, Student Counselors, and a host of others. Quiet, busy, purposeful, with a sense of mission, Bernice meets everyone ' s criteria for the selection of our First Co-Ed. Helping to make decisions with the Hayes Loan Fund.
