Foreword A walk on the risky side might have been the designation given by a Maryland State student as he traversed his campus in 1961. Every few steps he took, it seemed, brought him - vithin a stumble of an excavation, a cornerstone, a scaffolding, a skvline of bulldozers and toolhouses. Gone were the gracious symmetry and shining order that have been our enduring pride. Hotv shall s ' e live with this? -iv-ailed the omen of Murphy Hall as they beheld the ' ivide gashes of earth and ungainly building blocks obscuring their favorite view. But wait: Does not the grateful earth receive that cornerstone from hands that build kno- vl- edge? On this site Maryland men and -women be given buildings s-herein to grow in kno vledge and visdom? Seventy-five years ago our founders dreame d a spacious campus of towering walls, kno ving these -would come in the fullness of time. As we celebrate our diamond anniversary, Mary- land State students also celebrate the hundredth year of the American land grant college and are proud to be a part of the building idea that trans- cended empty spaces and temporary discomforts ivhile the modern land grant college took shape. If one must stumble into an excavation or be- hold a scaffolding that mars his customary view, let him be grateful that on this chosen site we for- tunate few stand heirs of men and women who dreamed of mansions of knowledge still to come. Here and there in the pages of The Hawk, 1961, are reminders that our college is a-building still on their dreams.
