Under the direction of Dr. Frank Serio, they give up their vacation to learn something about a different culture and themselves. All return changed by the experience. As members of this organization we hope to gain an understanding of our profession and our role in the communities we will serve. Our goal this year was to become recognized in the Dental School, as well as on the UMAB campus. To reach this goal we became involved in different activities, such as revising our Constitution and Bylaws, forming a dental hygiene liaison program with dental students, and participating in the USGA. SADHA is also involved with community public health activities, fundraising, spring banquet plans and professional growth. Student participation in SADHA insures that the Uni- versity of Maryland Dental Hygiene program graduates will be active and vital participants of the dental health care team and their local American Dental Hygienists ' Association. It is the purpose of the Student Dental Association to work within the administration to make these frustrations which are inherent within the School more bearable. I would like to believe that we have succeeded to some degree during his past year. I hope that as alumni we will, as a group, continue to seek productive changes for those who follow. The SDA hopes thai each graduate will leave with many lasting friendships, some fond memories, and the commit- ment to excellence in dentistry. In retrospect, however, the time has slipped by. What we didn ' t know then but do know now is tremendous. What we couldn ' t do before but can do now is a privilege. We have taken a great step in realizing our life goals. We should not forget that which has allowed us to make this stride: dedication to the cause, the resiliency to be per- sistent, and an objective worthy of this great effort. Along the way we have forged friendships and shared more than a laugh or two. We have shared an experience which only those who have lived it can appreciate. In that respect, we have traveled together. What we bring to the profession is the differing talent each of us possesses. In a crazy way its been fun. For most of us it will remain that singular event that shapes the rest of our lives. Paul Hart FROM THE EDITOR The purpose of any yearbook is to attempt to capture in words and pictures, the years we have spent in school. The two most important aspects of a yearbook are THEME (the feel ) and DESIGN (the look ) — which both refer to the unifying characteristics which give the yearbook continuity. I believe it was me who once said, A picture is worth a thousand words, so I squeezed in many pictures on every page throughout the book; es- pecially of seniors, for it is the seniors for which this edition of The MIRROR is made. Wlierever you go, whatever you do, there will be prob- lems to ovecome and people you don ' t like. This thought helps me to put away the negative experiences and re- member all the positive experiences of dental school. The past four years have been very rewarding both in den- tistry and more importantly with the relationships I have made with my friends.
