Serio has been organizing an annual trip to the Dominican Republic to provide volunteer dental ser- vices to the poorest of the poor. The month long trek is organized through the Catholic Medical Mission and the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph. During June and July of 1986, eight members of the Class of 1987 were given the opportunity to volunteer a portion of their vacations in order to assist Dr. Serio. As our stay in San Jose de Ocoa progressed we began to develop an understanding of why Frank returns to this Third World country year after year after year. ■' ; t i m 1 fH EL JEFE Great bunch of ladies, eh? 10 In Dr. Serio ' s words, the common bond that formed bet- ween us is something that all those who participated will always fondly remember. As our leader also predicted, we would all grow with the experience — dentally, spiritually and personally. To be chosen for this honor a student is first recommended by the University and is then voted on by the National organization. 139 GORGAS ODONTOLOGICAL HONORARY SOCIETY The Gorgas Odontological Society was organized in 1915 as a student organization and later it was changed to an honorary dental student society with scholarship as a basis for admission. The Society is named after Dr. Ferdinand J. Gorgas, a pioneer in dental education and a great contributor to dental literature, and it was with the idea of perpetuating his name that the society ado pted it. The Society makes for its objective the furtherance of dental knowledge by discussion and lectures. The prestigious honor society requires maintenance of at least a B average in the disciplines of both Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics for all four years of dental school. This year Gamma Pi Delta had four meetings at various restaurants in Baltimore. Special guest speakers were present at each dinner with their goals directed toward stimulating the creative interest of prosthodontics in general dentistry. The fraternity is represented by a hollow, cylindrical object whose base never touches table when empty, whose sides are well gripped by five agile digits, and whose top edge is often found near the obicularis oris muscle. Xi Psi Phi, better known as Zip, provides a tradition of annual events commencing with warm beer cold pizza night identifying those who will be submitted to the mysterious and esoteric rite of membership selection known as sink night. The adventure continues with the bar terrorizing limo races, balcony climbing camelback ski trip, and ending the year with Zip ' s version of a dental convention at Dewey Beach. Throughout these events and the many other Zip sponsors. This organization was later renamed the National Dental Association. This organization serves the needs of minority dentists until this day. In Maryland the Baltimore Dental Society finally voted to accept Negro dentists as members beginning in 1960. In 1972 a group of dental students decided to form a student branch of the National Dental Association, the Student National Dental Association. One of the people instrumental in this pioneering effort is Dr. Tony Mad- dox (the first black graduate of BCDS). The Baltimore Chapter of SNDA is the first chapter to establish a scholarship fund. This fund, named the| Robert T. Waddell and A. Grzech Dfrwft Aillonia Bakiunas, D.D.S. Dr. B graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry in Cleveland. Ohio in 1975. There were only 4 women out of 72 students in her class. She was a vice-president and president of her classes and says of her alma mater. I enjoyed dental school very much. We were treated very well by the faculty there. From dental school, she entered the Navy on a scholarship. There were only 6 women in the pro- gram at the time, and it was a hard transition because it was a very male-oriented environment. My mail was sent to a Mr. Toni Bakiunas. and it took me 3 days to find out my locker was in the men ' s locker room, says Dr. B with a chuckle. Upon completion of her two-year stint in the Navy, Dr. Balciunas went on for her masters in oral diagnosis and oral medicine. She has what she calls a practice dealing specifically with TMJ dysfunction, oral lesions such as lichen planus and pemphigus and myofacial and atypical pain. She no longer does general dentistry. She deals with pain not typically found in general dentistry. Dr. Balciunas came to the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School. University of Maryland as an assistant professor of oral diagnosis in August 1979, the year she received her M.S.D. degree from Indiana University. She was involved with the Myo-oral Facial Pain Clinic from 1981-1983, hut since that clinic no longer exists, you may find Dr. B either down on the clinic fioor in the new radiology screening treatment planning area or the Oral Medicine Clinic treating TMJ referrals in faculty practice or giving lectures to medical residents and dental postgrads in conjoint science and biomedicine subjects. Dr. Balciunas is the Treasurer of the Faculty Assem- bly and a Vice-President of Omicron Kappa Upsilon and has an appointment in the Psychophysiology Clinic which has a very unique multidisciplinary treatment for somatic disorders. The clinic treats TMJ pain, headaches and stress with a combination of biotijedback and counseling. Patients are taught to recognize and deal with their problems. When asked what the future holds, Dr, B says she will be staying in the Baltimore area since her fiance is situated here. She will continue to be teaching and would like to see the students and faculty learn more about facial pain. She would also like to see the Myo-oral Facial Pain Clinic reinstituted. We seem to be missing an important educational opportunity without the clinic says Dr, Balciunas thoughtfully. Dr. Sharon Siegel posed the question, where have all the students gone ' . ' She assessed current students ' mental attitudes as devoid of desire in gaining knowledge. A problem definitely exists which uncovers a basic misunderstanding in student-faculty interactions. In other words, the problem is not solely the students. Perhaps, it is not student motivation but inaccessibility to the tools necessary for professional development. These tools lie within the realm of faculty interest. For illustrated purposes, I have developed two stereotypical attitudes of faculty experi- enced by the confronting student. Please note, however, that a broad spectrum exists between the two extremes. First, let us consider bad faculty anitudes! He she is the type that makes a student shrink away from seeking instruction and damages professional development. Such a condition is perpetuated by the omnipotent instructor, one that utilizes intimidation tactics, using humiliation as a vice. These instructors demand to know what a student is attempting to do. They expressly ask what we don ' t know to find out what we do know. Savage 158 FROM THE CLASS PRESIDENT The years have passed quickly even though there were days that lasted forever. We came from all over and from all kinds of backgrounds to share the experience. And oh what an experience! As if dental school weren ' t eventful enough, we ' ve also shared the births of loved ones, the death of loved ones, marriage, divorce, and a couple people even became American citizens. But that ' s the point; there was someone there, student or faculty, to share it with and to ease the burden. It was that togetherness that made our class a pleasure to work with and to work for. We have fought the good fight — we have finished the race. We are all about to realize some of the rewards that people who own a certain piece of paper are privy to. The truth is, however, we are not changed by a pi ece of paper. We have not finished the race — the fight is not over — it must continue. The pursuit of ex- cellence does not end! The intent of the 1987 edition of The MIRROR is to somehow capture a small part of that fight and record the people in the race. Any omissions and or mistakes are truly an oversight which is inherent in the mammoth task of putting together the pieces of this puzzle called a yearbook. The true test as to whether this edition of The MIRROR is successful should come sometime around the turn of the century. Your copy of The MIRROR should remain undisturbed on some dusty shelf — forgotten for fifteen to twenty years. If, at that time, the smell of dust and mildew is stronger than the smell of printers ink, then it is time to peruse the pages. Hopefully, the content will jar loose some of the memories of the good part of our four-year tenure here which was, of course, the people.
