±1 LMVot audii ILLLU IzljjaJ W Htf -idUJS: LqjUJLJ OJV EARLIEST BEGINNINGS: On 1 February 1840, a charter for the ' stablishment of a dental college which could confer he degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery was ;ranted to a faculty consisting of four members. The , M.D. as President and hapin A. Harris, M.D. as Dean of the College. Horace Hayden, a carpenter and architect by rade, practiced dentistry in Baltimore in 1802 after pprenticing with several mentors. His interest in inysiological and pathological research led him to arn his M.D- degree (honorary) from the Jefferson Jollege of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1837. As a ecturer at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in dental topics, he realized the need for ystematic formal education in dentistry. With the lelp of Dr. Harris, an energetic and resourceful man ome forty years his junior, Dr. Hayden set about with the task of establishing a curriculum for dental tudy. Recruiting students, however, proved to be a hallenging undertaking. With no faculty per se, chieving recognition and notoriety were difficult ideed. hirst lectures were held in churches and other high isibility locations. In 1842, the first location to be ailed the dental college was located at 13-15 South harp Street, a leased building with a stable loft in its ear used for the dissections of cadavers, a practice rowned upon by society at that time. Five students ormed the first class and two students formed the irst graduating class in 1841. rUITION: 1840 — $30 — lecture fee $5 — matriculation fee - $30 — diploma fee 1986 — $4,509 — resident fee $10,173 — non-resident fee DDITIONAL FIRST YEAR EXPENSES: 1840 — living expenses 1986 — $3,554.25 = living expenses STUDENT BODY: 1840 — 5 1986 — 112 plus three other classes, dental hygiene classes, post-graduate students in nine specialties, totalling some 600 individuals. rYPICAL GRADUATE: 1840 — R. Covington MacKall, age at graduation — 18, background — after becoming the first graduating dentist from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dr. MacKall went to St. Louis to set up his practice.
