Goldvarg 116 The Gorgas Odontological Society was organized in 1915 as a student organization, and later it was changed to an honorary dental student society with scholarship as a basis for admission. The Society is named after Dr. Ferdinand J. Gorgas, a pioneer in dental education and a great contributor to dental literature, and it was with the idea of perpetuating his name that the society adopted it. The Society makes for its objective the furtherance of dental knowledge by discussion and lectures. Gorgas is comprised of junior and senior members whose scholastic endeavors have placed them in at least the top third of their class. Over the past years, Dr. Jose Diaz has provided aid and guidance in an exemplary fashion not only to this organization but to all the students at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. The fraternal aspect of Alpha Omega is demonstrated by the Big Brother Alumni-Undergraduate Program which features a Big Brother dinner meeting. The Baltimore Alumni and Zeta Mu chapters hold several dinner meetings together wher guest speakers lecture on topics related to dentistry. Rush Week ' 79 was responsible for a large increase in membership. Rush week events included a beer and pizza party, a night at Maxwell ' s and a rush breakfast. Many seminars are held by upperclassmen for freshmen and sophomores in Basic Dental Science and seminars are held by seniors to introduce juniors to clinic. Social events include the annual Welcome Back Crab Feast in Colum- bia. A disco party was sponsored by Alpha Omega in conjunction with Informal Parties, LTD. During the winter an evening at Ski Liberty helped celebrate the end of minimester and a winter spring party was held during the second semester. The highlight of the social calendar is the annual Spring Away Weekend which was held this year in Wildwood, New Jersey. In support of Alpha Omega International and the Alpha Omega Foundation, Zeta Mu has continued its T-shirt sales campaign to raise funds to donate to the Hebrew University Dental School in Jerusalem, Israel. Alpha Omega founded and maintains that institution. This year delegates from Zeta Mu attended the International Convention held in Tel Aviv, Israel. SENIORS UNDERGRADUATES s. Aiken, L. Bishop, A. Co.), Sailing Night on the Inner Harbor, a cocktail party on the 16th floor of the World Trade Center overlooking the Inner Harbor, and an evening at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. An open party and joint undergraduate alumni breakfast comprised Rush Week activities. The year ended with Psi O ' s biggest event — the Faculty Appreciation and Awards night. Fraternalism and the high standards of the dental profession are qual- ties one can find in Psi Omega. Today there are 30 chapters in the United States Dental Schools. The founders of SNDA sought to develop an organization that would speak to such issues as recruitment retention; the dental health needs of minority communities; and future issues confronting organ- ized dentistry. The University of Maryland Chapter of SNDA was chartered in 1973. Since that time the membership has increased significantly. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The quality of student life at any institution can in part be measured by the responsiveness of the institution to the needs of the student. Without the presence of an organization to effectively represent stu- dents ' views, many problems and conflicts would go unresolved. Here at Maryland, the Student Dental Association affords the assur- ance that the students ' voice will be heard on many levels. The SDA has representation on the State Board of Higher Education, the Uni- versity of Maryland Association of Students, the UMAB campus sen- ate and all faculty council committees at the dental school. These include admissions, curriculum, instrument selection, recruitment, research and library and publication — to name but a few. Many changes have occurred in our educational program without stu- dent realization of their own SDA input. To be certain, problems remain — but the avenue is open to promote change and to speak with a united voice in order to be heard through our own direct link with the administration of the University and the School. The SDA also provides us with an opportunity for us to have fun via the annual Bull Roast, school parties and student-faculty weekend. Information is disseminated through the newspaper (The Probe), the yearbook (The Mirror), and our own TV show (Studio 666). For all this and so much more, the SDA would like to thank the stu- dent affairs office: Ms. Deloris Williams and Dr. Mark Wagner for their time and effort. At present the SDA is one of the strongest student governments in the country. It is the strongest student government on campus — and it will remain as such given the continued support of all those individuals who have worked to make the SDA work for you. 133 Do You Know These Famous People??? 1 ' .
