Whafs Our Class Really Like! The Staff of the 1969 MIRROR compiled the following facts concerning the Class of 1969: The average graduate is 25.6 years of age, weighs 166 pounds, and is J ' ll tall. While in dental school, he gained 3.5 pounds. Seventy-five per cent of the Class of 1969 are married, while the bachelors average 1.7 dates per week. While being full-time students, 83% of the Senior Class moonlighted an average of 17.7 hours per week at an hourly wage of $3.20. Fifty-one per cent were employed as hospital laboratory tech- nicians. Other occupations varied from research to bricklaying. This part-time employment con- tributed to the average annual income of $4,875.00 (including wife ' s income). Although 75% of the Seniors had an average of 68% of their dental education paid for by their parents, 70% also found it necessary to borrow an average of $3,845.00 to finance their edu- cation and living expenses. Only 16% of the Senior students received partial scholarships averaging a total of $1,150.00 for four years. The ' 69 graduate owns on the average 1.1 cars, with the average year model being a 1965 clunker. Thirty-two per cent have ADA group life insurance. Only 20% of the class still smoke cigarettes, with 23% of the class having given up smoking while in dental school. Eighty-four per cent said they would again study dentistry if they had the opportunity to start anew. Of the 16% who would have chosen another field, one-half would have entered medicine. Eighty per cent of the Class of 1969 felt they received an adequate dental education, while an additional 12% felt they had received a superior dental education, leaving only 8% who did not feel that their education was adequate. They considered Gross Anatomy, Pathology, and Microbiology as the strong courses of their Basic Sciences Program; and considered Physiology as the weak Basic Science Course. Removable Prosthodontics was the overwhelming strong point of the Clinical De- partments, with Periodontics and Pedodontics also considered as strong departments. However, Op- erative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics and Orthodontics were considered as weak Clinical Depart- ments. As to our future, 60 % now feel they will enter general practice after military service. Eight per cent consider Oral Surgery as their specialty, and 6%, plan to specialize in each of the following specialties: Pedodontics, Orthodontics, Endodontics, or Prosthodontics, with a final 8% unable to decide. It is the hope of the MIRROR Staff that these statistics will enable you to gain a better insight of the Class of 1969. -{14}-
