What a transformation — for 1 remember addressing you on Freshman Orien- tation Day. You then appeared as frightened undergrads. Now, you have acquired poise, dig- nity, and stature. Throughout your four years here, you have labored long and hard. This is the process of molding you into a finished product so that you may take your rightful place as a member of one of the health professions. Your curriculum was lengthy and full. Yet. when comparing your education with that of 41 years ago, we note that tremendous changes have occurred: new discoveries, new materials, new techniques, new equipment, high speeds, the anti- biotics, and the st ressing of basic sciences and research. You are fortunate to have been edu- cated in this rapidly changing era. It is always hazardous to predict the future — and I remind you to be prepared. For you are now enrolled in a life-long school to continue keeping pace with the new. Do not let your- selves sink into obsolescence. Being prepared means a brilliant future. You are my last graduating class. It was a pleasure to have known you. My heartiest con- gratulations and blessings to all of you. M. S. G. VANDEN BOSCHE Professor of Biochemistry To those who have known him, he is the personification of dignity, honor, and professional attitude. We grew to love and respect him for his impartiality, integrity, friendliness, and warm interest in each student. The devotion which he manifests toward his work, to the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, and to the student is truly admirable. It is in a spirit of gratitude and hope that our dental careers will reflect his inspiration that the Class of 1963 dedicates its yearbook to Dr. E. G. We were to be the last freshman class to be greeted by Dean Aisenberg before his retirement. After the first Anatomy exam, everything began to settle into its proper place. We found that several new experiments were being tried on our class. During the first semester, our only Anatomy lectures were in lab, and we had two extra hours on Friday afternoon to get to know our cadaver better. A memorable way to get acquainted with the other members of our class was our highly successful class party before Thanksgiving. Just when we were really beginning to enjoy ourselves, February brought more eight o ' clock classes and five o ' clock labs, and a greater amount of midnight oil-burning for an unceasing strmg of exams. But February also brought fraternity rushing, and a substantial number of our class joined one of the Greek letter groups. Then came spring and Neuro; and finally the last exam in June prior to a much needed rest. As we look back we remember — an article about our class secretary in the Suiipapevs; How can I spend six hours doing what Dr. Ramsey did in fifteen minutes? ; the protein lectures and exam; I think that the labio-lingual diameter is about 0.3 mm off ; The free surfaces of the body are covered by cpicclial tissue ; Follow your dissector and clean it up a little better ; and Dr. Seipp ' s hundred-minute lectures in fifty minutes. iu ' r First Row: J. One year of pro- fessional education had been completed and we were now in our last year of preclinical studies. Although we may have decreased in numbers, we had not decreased in spirit. Up to the Sixth for that nine o ' clock rinse was common during our participation in Micrin research. Sahva was at a premium this year. Pathology laboratory ' s byword was, Sal- ivate while you correlate. Technic courses have presented a challenge to us this year. In answer to long endeavors, the class presented the 1965 gold-foil foot-condenser, a Triangular bar tester, and the Maryland sharpening stone. Benton, Deeley, and Caulk are still discussing rights! The year has been a struggle. But now we look forward to our days in the clinic, with assurance that we have been given a firm foundation. ■[19 1- 1. We had been told there is a great transition from the manikin to the patient; how right they were! The manikin never missed an appointment, but then it never smiled and said, Thank you. It was a good feeling to don the white clinic gown, even though it fit like a tent. We were finally going to start, but after two hours of trying to put on a rubber dam, we wondered if there would be time to prepare the cavity. When the Christmas season approached, it was definite that there were going to be many happy denture wearers, or many more impressions. As the days and appointments slipped by, we began to realize that points really were important, because without them, we would never have the opportunity to diagnose pathology. We heard about Preventive Dentistry, and reasoned its several meanings while removing mutilated fingers from a pedo patient ' s mouth. After anesthetizing our first lip, we knew the value in, Head back, open please. When the final weeks of this transition year were closing in, we worked to the sound of humming burrs, the reaming and filing of a root canal, the scaling and polishing of teeth. Will our years as dentists be as stimulating and challenging as this past year? We, as neophytes, have accepted the successes and failures of the Junior Year and are look- ing forward to the Senior Year at BCDS, and the future years in the dental profession. ■{23 Jhe 1. . . . pale, homogeneous, glassy, translucent . . . 4. But for most of us, we were still trying to finish our requirements before the cut-off date. Even though we may have had our close calls, we could look back to a most enjoyable year and one that we shall always remember. We ' ll never forget Public Health Dentistry where we learned all about sta- tistics and looked forward to our weekly letter to the mayor. We remember the early assignments to Mercy Hospital to put our knowledge of Internal Medicine to use. And then there was OPD. Yes, the Class of 1963 would never have believed that four years of dental school could have passed so fast. Now that we are graduating, we can look back and see the changes that have occurred in our four years. We can enjoy the memories and anticipate the future in the armed forces, internships, graduate studies, or private practice. We are looking forward to future successes, and know that we must set our hearts to the tasks we love. -!26f J onorufi f Senior LtaJJ f- esicient WILBUR OWEN RAMSEY Professor of Dental Prosthetics The Department of Dental Prosthesis has the distinc- tion for the second consecutive year of having the grad- uating class extend to a member of its department the honor of becoming the Honorary Senior Class President. Dr. Wilbur Owen Ramsey is a man truly deserving of this honor. His abilities and devotion as an educator, scientist and teacher exemplify the finest traditions of American dental education. His personal feelings, pleasant manner and genuine interests have made him a friend of every student. It is with a spirit of gratitude and pride that we, the Class of 1963, elect Dr. Ramsey as Honorary Class President. -{27!. Dk e a aSS 1963 Richard P. Beimler Dick Yonkers, New York . . . Each year, invitations for membership are given to those juniors who stand in the first thirty percent of their class. The Society, formed in 1916, is named in honor of Dr. Ferdinand J. S. Gorgas, an outstanding graduate of the school who was a widely recognized leader in the field of dental education. Monthly meetings afford members educational benefits beyond the outlined dental school curriculum through the presentations of guest speakers. Each year at the spring formal senior members are presented with a key and certificate. The faculty advisor is Dr. Jose E. It also tries to promote and maintain harmonious student-faculty relations and considers any problems that may exist and recommends solutions. In addition, the Student Senate contributes to student life and activities. Five dances are planned for the school year, including the Student Senate Mixer, three class dances, and the senior banquet and dance. The Senate also administers a short-term loan fund. Tournaments are annually scheduled in bowling, basketball, and softball, under its direction. -{62}. ntematermtiA ovincll rtC The purpose of the IFC is to create and maintain interfraternal feelings throughout the student body and im- partially govern those activities of the fraternities connected with school regulations. The Council is composed of the presidents and vice-presidents of each of the dental fraternities. The main function of the IFC is the supervision of the annual rush period. The Council also contributed to the bowling, basketball, and Softball leagues. Each year, the IFC awards a trophy to the senior who is voted by his class as having been most outstanding in student activities during the four years at dental school. This year ' s officers were Dave Bimestefer (PsiO), president; Stuart Landsman (SED), vice-presi dent; Frank Richo (ZIP), secretary; and Marty Narun (AO), treasurer. ■{63; A- 0, m.eaa f I ' nil Rinr: Lad J, P.ittei-son, Lamb, Shaffer, Taylor, Eng, Probst, Womer, Rcddi,sh, Chambers. The faculty, led by Dr. Sanders and Bob Whitney, was listed as the team to watch. SED broke in front and remained in first place most of the year with ZIP I a strike away. At the close of the season, dark horse PsiO I overtook everyone to end the season in a tie with ZIP I, and won the playoff to become champions. As the season progressed, it became evident that the bowlers were a dedicated group. Nothing interfered with the Thursday night games. Tests were moved, weather was changed, and wives and babies were left crying. The year was capped by an award party at the ZIP House. Awards were presented to Harx ' ey Wildman, highest average; John Pentzer, high set; and Ralph Jacobson and Nick Russo, high game. Informal basketball and softball games were also played during the year. ■{73h Vedy ntce pleplaratioti fVlr, Fin Cjcin but wH not holdcinjal Qm ve y uve -(74 LmcS i-j y III l rostketlcs Open please.
