One of these is our associ- ation with Professor Thompson. We shall remember par- ticularly his gentle and courteous manner, his informal but effective way of conveying his vast resources of knowl- edge, and his sincerity and devotion to teaching. The Class of 1961 is indebted to you, Professor Thomp- son. LOWN We, the Class of 1961, will long remember our classmate and friend Keith G. Lown whose tragic death in February, 1960, brought sorrow and grief to us all. A native of California Keith entered the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery after receiving his B.A. from Fresno State College. During his three years at the Baltimore College of Dental Sur- gery we all grew to know and respect him for his dedicated devotion to his dental studies. His desire was to reach and maintain the highest professional and ethical standards possible. But perhaps Keith ' s most outstanding characteristic was exemplified by the number of friends he had who will always cherish his memory. His classmates elected him as one of their class officers and he was an active member of Xi Psi Phi fraternity. His was a philosophy that can best be explained by the following excerpt from a letter writ- ten by Keith shortly before his death: What do I really want? I really do not know what I want, but this I do know, I want to be outstanding. I want to be a credit to my wife, my family, my friends. I want to be liked, I want to be known, I want to be remembered. The student body and faculty mourn the passing of a friend. in FAREWELL, MISS TOOMEY After 44 years of devoted service to the B. C. D. S. Miss Toomey has retired. Miss Toomey began working at the dental school as a secretary in 1917. She became Administrative Assistant in the 1920 ' s and has the distinction of having served under three deans: Dr. Timothy O. Heatwole, Dr. J. Ben Robinson, and the present dean, Dr. Myron S. Aisenberg. Of her many activities. Miss Toomey has served as secretary of the Dean ' s Council, and secretary-treasurer of the Faculty Assembly. She has been active in the Newman Club, the Dental Assistants Society and was an organizer of the Women of Psi Omega. She is an honorary member of the School ' s Alumni Association, the Alumni Association of the University of Mary- land and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Baltimore County Dental Society. Miss Toomey has the distinction of having received an honorary LL.D. degree from Mount Saint Mary ' s College in 1958. In 1960 the Student Senate presented her with a plaque commemorating her outstanding service and assistance to the student body. Since 1917, Miss Toomey has been like a mother-away-from-home to many of the 3,371 graduating students. She has added the invaluable feminine touch to the School and has helped to make her boys feel at home. The Class of 1961 bids you farewell. Miss Toomey. We wish you the best of luck in the future and may God bless you. 4 7Β Β£RE MAY BE T MΒ£% WMΒ£N YOU BOYS WOn ' t A flEE , AUT THESE flEXT TOUR ySA iS iRE DfN TO BE THE HAPPIEST OF YOW SΒ£pr.23, 1957 A β–  J -ii? Naito Treasurer: Gilbert S. Berman Historian: Sheldon G. Gross Sergeant at Arms: David B. Pere Student Senate ' Representatives: Donald A. Brown Frank J. Sinnreich, Jr. How long is four years? As entering freshmen, four years seemed, to us, an undefinable amount of time to be spent working together and alone, working toward that day which is now upon us. Graduation is traditionally thought of as the end of one phase of learning and the beginning of another. But it is more. It is a time of remembering and of evaluating that which now belongs to the past. Four years ago we began our studies at B. C. D. S., each bringmg with him ideas, previous training, and various backgrounds. We represented almost as many areas as there were individuals. Some of us had traveled widely; others found themselves away from their home states for the first time. The majority of us came directly from undergraduate schools, but some had worked or served in the Armed Forces before beginning their professional training. Our strong- est bond was a common desire to become a dentist. Four years of working, wishing, laughing, learning, and even complaining together have served to broaden and strengthen the original bond we shared. Together we have paved the way for classes that will follow ours. We have broken in (and broken down) new professors and helped institute and execute revisions. Socially, as well as scholasti- cally, we have formed common bonds through school and fraternity dances as well as through extracurricular activities. The termination of these four years again finds us dispersing to different areas, seeking individual goals. Some of us will continue our professional education; others will enter the Armed Services; still others will teach or begin private practice. However, we part with the knowledge that our first common bond will remain with us β€” we ' re all dentists. β– I12K honorary president of the class of 1961 Jose H. Diaz During our clinical years, we had the opportunity to become well acquainted with Dr. Diaz. As we got to know him better we reahzed that this was a dedicated teacher, who showed interest and respect for the individual student. This was a teacher who not only generated in- terest in the acquisition of knowledge, but made our training pleasurable. We admire him for his professional character: his politeness, sin- cerity, patience and humility. Dr. Diaz, the Class of 1961 unanimously elected you its honorary president. -1131. the graduating class of 1961 Paul Wilfred Achin Pablo . . . North Attleboro, Massachusetts . . . Roth Student Senate Representatives: John Thomson James E. Andrews Oh, to be a Junior! This was an often heard lamentation in the sophomore labs as we carved the third wax pattern due to an unexplainable mis-cast, or fished our anterior pontics out of the drain. We were to have a great awak- ening when we received our first patient from Diagnosis and saw just how confusing the conglomeration of charts, X-rays, order blanks, initials, rubber dams, and thirty-two teeth could be. When the anxiously awaited day to sink our first bur finally arrived, we discovered how hard a tooth really is, and that a white gown didn ' t make us dentists. Root canals could get infected and the ideal cavity preparations were more easily vishualized than realized. One after another the surprises came. The thermometer and the class barometer both soared to heights that had not been equaled in the pre- vious two years. Frequently the plaints could be heard β€” I need a gold foil, Who has an extra pedo patient? Each of us felt that no other student could possibly have experienced as desperate a situation with patient shortage and the inevitable cancellations. Colts games, fraternity parties, and class dances made the week ends something to be anticipated on Fridays and, in some instances, not to be remembered pleasantly on Monday. Never a dull moment as we continued up the slopes of Mount Olympus. The phrase which might well have served as a motto for the Class of ' 62 in its first clinical year was Hurry up to wait! Scholastically the class had an unusually high percentage of men entering the Gorgas Odontological Society, and the entire class is to be congratulated on one hundred percent satisfactory results on the National Board Examinations. Though the tests of one ' s ability, patience, and fortitude seemed hard at the time we realize that they serve a pur- pose in preparing us for our chosen profession. We each look forward to a fourth and final year of acquiring further insight into the principles that must be applied in order that we may achieve the successful practice of dentistry. β€’{441 c ? C. D. S. was one to be remembered and one that brought back many memories of our Freshman year. Being initiated into the basic aspects of physiology and the microbial world of Dr. Shay made us forget most of last year ' s routine except for one thing; the fact that our gastrocnemius muscles began to develop again from our climb to the heights of Mt. Olympus. We recognized all the familiar faces from our previous year, with the exception of three who were missing. Of our instructors, there were two familiar faces among the group β€” Dr. Oggesen, who kept us at the grind stone solder- ing bridges and looking for crowns and inlays that invariably were lost down the drain or just happened to fly through the air with the greatest of ease into oblivion β€” Dr. Vanden Bosche who reminded us in operative of the acute line angles that were to be made in the buccal surface. In prosthetic demonstrations we waited in vain for the glass-top table that was supposed to be ordered so that we would not miss a single point concerning the set up. Of course, we can ' t for- get the exasperating moment, which continued into hours when we tried to cannulate the carotid artery of man ' s best friend. Most of us will admit that we increased our knowledge of the dental world by listening to the speeches of fellow students, anticipating the time when we would be temporary dentists with a ast amount of knowledge to deliver to our fellow man. True, our first year at the B. C. D. S. was never to be forgotten and the same can be said of our Sophomore year β€” a year in which we got a taste of the world of dentistry, and one in which we looked forward to leaving our brown lab jackets to don the white coats as members of the junior class. β€’148(. One hun- dred men have met to embark upon an endeavor, both individual and collective, which will determine their future lives. A convergence of different backgrounds and characteristic accents well describes the Freshman Class. Orientation brought many strange and intriguing experiences. On our first day we learned of a new law of physics β€” Aisenberg ' s Gas Law. With a deluge of boxes and bags containing various non descript equipment came the iirst Green Hornet Gang. We, the Class of 1964, can lay claim to two other firsts β€” the first beginning class to have use of the new and mod- ern Baltimore Union and the equally new and impressive Health Sciences Library. In a world of our own, among police dog patrols and ambulance and fire sirens, we attempted to settle down and decipher some of the multitudes of new situations and activities. At times, it seemed as though our feet could ha ' e done a better job than our hands in the dental materials laboratory. Would some one kindly tell us who posted the first Anatomy examination grades on the freshman locker room bulletin board. ' . ' ' The second semester introduced us to the dentition of the narwhale and a completely foreign language of such as the mesial angle is actually the point of junction of labio-mesial, linguo-mesial line angles, and the incisal surface, with the lingual surface forming a lingual fossa bordered by the mesial, distal, and incisal ridges and traversed by the lingual de- velopmental lines from the cingulum ?? ! ! The season ' s highlight was A.O. ' s come-from-behind 7-6 win over de- fending champion Psi O. This spring A.O. re- turns six seniors, Morris Antonelli, Lester Breen, Arnie Hecht, Arnie Loew, Larry Wynne, and Richard Sachs, to defend its crown. The fall semester opened with I.F.C. Presi- dent, Larry (director of athletics) Clark, heading up the department of physical culture. Except for the athletic feats performed with automatic mallet and lubba dam during clinic hours, fall sports were absent from the curriculum at B.C.D.S. After returning from the Christmas vaca- tion, the B.C.D.S. version of the N.B.A. got under way, with five teams pounding the hard- wood floor every Wednesday night. Paced by McLaughlin, Kamezawa, Crouse, Kovack, Zu- laski, Maser, Webster, and Krupinsky, ZIP re- mained undefeated and captured the 1961 crown. Many thanks to Larry Clark for a job well done as the man in the striped shirt. A.O. sponsored its annual bridge tournament in January, with the team of Lester Breen and Dick Sachs defeating all challengers and emerg- ing as kings of the card sharks. Bowling, the national pastime of the embryo dentists of B.C.D.S., was thrown open to com- petition in January. As this column goes to press, defending champion A.O., sorely missing the services of last year ' s star, Harry B. Levy, has sunk to the doldrums of last place. There may be doubt that it was pounded. But the patient knows, bless his throbbing head. For many ' s the time he wished he were dead. You see, once it fell out, though it now rests true. Thanks to the foil-plugger ' s friend, good ol ' Elmer ' s glue. F. Scott Fitzfoilie -1911- in appreciation The Senior Class wishes to express its appreciation to these members of the faculty: Dr. Biddix Dr. Cappuccio Dr. Diaz Dr. Dosh Prof. Foley Dr. Giardina Dr. Hahn Dr. Klein Dr. Medina Dr. Oggesen Dr. Preis Dr. Ramsey Dr. Smith Prof. Thompson Dr. Vanden Bosche Dr. Veltre Dr. Wright Dr. Yent In ' 57 our freshman year, Filled with anxiety and even fear We matriculated at this institution And began our dental education. As juniors we looked forward with anticipation To our first patient and first preparation. Patients were scarce, you will remember; Few men had their share before December. Our first actual contact with dentistry Was presented by Doctor Ramsey. Anatomy was taught by Thompson and Ffahn Across the street in the old barn. We were proud of a couple of men named Joe. Of course, we ' re referring to Biddix and Cappuccio. To these two men we express our gratitude For bolstering our egos and helping our attitude. For biochem we had a man Known to all as old Doctor Van. We shall always remember our freshman days And remember those men for their kind ways. As sophomores we were glad to see More emphasis placed on dentistry. In crown and bridge we had some fun Thanks to the efforts of Doctor Oggesen. Some of the more enjoyable time was spent Talking to Smith and Klein and Yent, And through the year it was rather nice To be instructed by men such as Veltre and Preis. As seniors we set out with requirements in mind And tried our best not to fall behind. Foils and bridges and inlays were produced And slowly but surely our requirements were reduced. To Mr. Foley we owe our respect; He helped to shape our intellect. For the speeches made and papers recorded We, in future years, shall be rewarded. Working in prosthetics was a delight Because of the helpfulness of Ramsey and Wright. For fairness no one surpassed Jose Medina; The godsend in pedo was Joe Giardina. No doubt sophomore year was tough. The labs were long and exams were rough. But its merits were not reahzed until We entered the clinic and discovered our skill. We seniors hope that every class has Men humble as Dosh and Diaz. The feeling is prevalent throughout our ranks That all these men deserve our sincerest thanks. i zy superlatives Achin β€” Baldest Alban β€” Most authoritative Antonelli β€” Most innocent looking Berman β€” Best pharmacist Boland β€” Wittiest Breen β€” Tallest Brown β€” Most likely not to teach school Bryans β€” Best dresser Buchness β€” Oldest Carmosino β€” Biggest spaghetti bender Cavanaugh β€” Biggest Irishman Clark β€” Biggest fraternity pusher Grouse β€” Most artistic Darke β€” Most considerate Doheny β€” Shyest Doherty β€” Biggest pool shark Dunker β€” Most professional Fitzgerald β€” Best crown and bridge man Fliss r Most emcient team roer Furtado β€” Most popular Girotti β€” Proudest poppa Goepfrich β€” Best vampire Goettee β€” Hardest worker Goldenberg β€” Most thoughtful (Kroopnick) Griffith β€” Biggest rebel Gross β€” Most conservative Hamburger β€” Biggest money merchant Hecht β€” Handsomest Higel β€” Biggest Florida booster Hoffman β€” Happiest Hurdle β€” Most patient lacovelli β€” Most eligible bachelor Israel β€” Most patriotic Kagey β€” Most relaxed Kamezawa β€” Best athlete Kaminski β€” Calmest Kaplan β€” Best debater Keary β€” Biggest hustler Kolakowski β€” Most reserved Kovack β€” Best bartender Kroopnick β€” Most thoughtful (Goldenberg) Lattanzi β€” Biggest Yankee Liller β€” Most congenial Loew β€” Youngest Love β€” Laziest McCallum β€” Best personality McLaughlin β€” Thinnest Marchesani β€” Most prolific Marrone β€” Quietest Martin β€” Most satirical Mason β€” Best golfer Matzkin β€” Most enthusiastic about oral surgery Meier β€” Best smile Meyers β€” Most likely to become dean Morley β€” Biggest apple polisher Myatt β€” Best hockey player Naito β€” Biggest pineapple juice drinker Oliveira β€” Biggest politician Palmer β€” Best musician Pere β€” Biggest ladies ' man Perlmutter β€” Most excitable Phelps β€” Most graceful Pistoria β€” Best prosthodontist Raflfel β€” Best businessman Renbaum β€” Most inquisitive Robinson β€” Happiest to graduate Rockefeller β€” Noisiest Rosa β€” Most good natured Rosado β€” Speediest Rudo β€” Best beatnick Ryiz β€” Biggest chatterbox Sachs β€” Best oral pathologist (Zakarin) Sawyer β€” Biggest threat to Webster and Thorndyke Siegel β€” Best operator Sinnreich β€” Best laugh Slan β€” Most tired of commuting Snyder β€” Sleepiest Steig β€” Best attitude Stoller β€” Biggest heckler Streeter β€” Shortest Sullivan β€” Biggest complainer Summey β€” Craftiest Swann β€” Most cooperative Taft β€” Fattest Taylor β€” Most unusual expressions Teitelbaum β€” Friendliest Tilghman β€” Most likely to reduce Towson β€” Most likely to be seen at Ruth ' s Tucker β€” Most likely to remain a bachelor Wallen β€” Most gassed Wasserman β€” Most famous name Windeler β€” Most independent Witherspoon β€” Most patient with automobiles Wynne β€” Biggest party boy Zakarin β€” Best oral pathologist (Sachs) Zulaski β€” Biggest class cutter -!93h 1.
