(This is the eighth in a series) Alexander Horn Palerson, D. D. S., F, A. C. D. Each year since 1936, members of the graduating classes have competed for the Alexander H. Paterson Memorial Medal for Practical Set of Full Upper and Lower Dentures. Competition for this medal is always vigorous. It is well that we learn of the man in whose name this award is given. Dr. Paterson graduated from the University of Maryland in 1911. At commencement he was awarded the Uni- versity Gold Medal for Scholarship. Immediately after graduation. Dr. Paterson was appointed Demonstrator in Prosthetic Dentistry at his alma mater. This presented an opportunity for intensified study and a thorough preparation in the held of dental prosthesis. Dr. Paterson ' s great potential in dental research and education was recognized in 1924 when he became Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry. Dr. Paterson possessed the inherent qualities necessary to impart to others the knowledge and skill which were at his command. His personal integrity and steadfast drive were inspirational; his professional demeanor and moral standards were impeccable. He provided intelligent, unselfish, and progressive leadership in the elevation of dentis- try to its present professional standard. He taught and wrote with one goal in mind — idealism in dental service. When a man demands and obtains perfection in his own work, then he becomes an inspiration to all those who follow. As a contribution to prosthetic dentistry. Dr. Paterson took upon himself the herculean task of providing the pub- lic with a more effective prosthetic service. Much of his time was spent in perfecting the old techniques already in existence, but even more of his energy was directed toward the de ' elopment of modern denture prosthesis. Through his teaching, lectures, clinical presentations and publications, Dr. Paterson became one of the leading prosthodontists in this country and throughout the world. In the summer of 1923, Dr. Paterson was invited to exhibit his prosthetic models before the dental societies of Europe. He had worked for several years on the preparation of these models and had exhibited them around the United States where they were received with great enthusiasm. This was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to European dentists the status of American prosthetics. The exhibit was highly commended for its beauty and accu- racy by the British Dental Society at Manchester. Dr. Paterson took his exhibit to Holland where he presented a paper before the society in Amsterdam and then went to Paris to attend the annual meeting of the Federation Dentaire Internationale. Although deprived of many educational opportunities during early life. Dr. Paterson had the perseverance to struggle for the training he needed to prepare himself for his profession. He was never content with mediocrit) ' , and by his unselfish determination became a leader of great esteem in his community and profession. He held active membership in an impressive list of civic and professional organizations. After realizing his proficiency in pros- thetics, he devoted his life to aiding the progress in that field and to educating the profession so that it could better serve the public. Dr. Paterson ' s contributions to dentistry made him a true benefactor of his fellow men. His good works live on in the profession today. ■!3f
