SAINT APOLLONIA During the celebration of the millenary of the Roman Empire, in the reign of Decius, a persecution of the Christian subjects was instigated by a prophet who foretold the advent of a dire calamity, which was to be the result of the treacherous scheming of the Christian sect who worshipped a God other than the Roman deities. Apollonia of Alexandria was among the victims of the many outbreaks of fanatical passion and prejudice which were fostered by the Roman authorities through their stern policy of demanding allegiance to the pagan gods. Brought to trial Apollonia was ordered to renounce her faith in God and offer adoration to the pagan idols whom she had long ago renounced. When she spurned the royal edict with contempt, the txecutors of the imperial will directed that she be tortured. The basic facts of Apollonia ' s martydom are given in a letter written by Saint Dionysius to Bishop Fabius: A notable case was that of the aged virgin Apollonia, whom they seized and knocked out her teeth, strik- ing her on the jaws; then they made a pyre before the city and threatened to burn her alive, if she would not join them in uttering blasphemies. But she asked for a brief respite, and being let go, suddenly lept into the fire and was devoured by the flames. in

Siiveft o4nnivetsa if This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of two of our faculty members and two of our administrative personnel. The Mirror extends thanks and appreciation to these individuals for their loyal service over the years. EDWARD C. DOBBS, D. D. S. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Dr. Dobbs received a B. S. degree from the University of Maryland. After graduating in 1929 from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, he studied for two years as a Rockefeller Fellow in Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. Since 1932 Pro- fessor Dobbs has been Head of the Department of Pharmicology and Therapeutics at his alma mater. In addition to his teaching Dr. Dobbs ' professional activities have included a private practice; authorship of a textbook and journal articles; and research, especially in the field of anesthesia. MISS MARY HAGEN A native of Baltimore, Miss Hagen came to the Orthodontic Clinic in 1932. She completed her studies at St. Andrew ' s Business School. Her experience in the business world has also been supplemented by courses of study at Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College Evening School. Miss Hagen ' s secretarial abilities con- tribute well to the efficient operation of the Orthodontic Clinic. Among her hobbies. Miss Hagen considers travel as one of her most enjoyable; and she recalls a memorable trip to Europe in 1949 which culminated in an audi- ence with Pope Pius XII at Castelgandolfo. MISS BEATRICE MARRIOTT, A. B. A native of Baltimore, Miss Marriott received her education in local institutions including Friends School, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland, from which she received an A. B. degree. In 1932 she came to the University of Maryland Dental and Pharmacy Schools Library. In the capacity of assistant librarian Miss Marriott has helped many classes of students. In addition to her usual duties she has served on the Medical Library Survey Committee, was actively engaged in th; American Red Cross during World War II. and has proofread copy for medical periodicals. WILLIAM E. HAHN, D. D. S. A native of Maryland, Dr. Hahn received an A. B. degree from the University of Rochester. He received an M. S. in Anatomy as a Carnegie Foundation Fellow at Rochester University School of Medicine. He graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1931. Since 1933 Professor Hahn has been teaching at the B.C.D.S. He is Head of the Department of Anatomy. Dr. Harm ' s professional activities have included a specialty practice in Oral Surgery, publications in the field of dental literature, and numerous chairmanships on admin- istrative committees at the Dental School. -{5}-
