Vanden Bosche A.B., M.S., Ph.D. Professor of Biochemistry Chairman of the Committee on Admissions There is a certain dignity about Dr. Vanden Bosche that we sense on our interview day and the many days after. It is the dignity of a man dedicated to the teaching of neophyte dentists giving them of his knowl- edge and above all his friendship and advice when they are needed most. Who else has a ready word and a friendly smile for all who encounter him on his journeys through the clinic? Many former students practic- ing dentistry throughout these United States have shared these thoughtful gestures. God grant you many more fruitful years, Dr. Vanden Bosche, and for your encouragement and inspiration, we, the Class of 195 6, dedicate our yearbook to you. Doctor Thackston matriculated during the years of 1841 and 1842, receiv- ing his degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in June of 1842. Whenever momentous changes need to be wrought in history nature fortunately supplies us with men to effect them. In the middle of the nineteenth century, dentistry as a profession was struggling to establish itself. During this critical period men like Dr. Thackston stepped forth and brought to den- tistry the intelligence, education, and social sense, coupled with inventiveness and mechanical ability, so essential to give dentistry the right to claim the title of profession. Dr. Thackston was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, on Leap Day of 1820. At the age of twenty-one he entered the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. The beginning of a fruitful career could be seen in his choice of thesis subject, A DISSERTATION ON THE DISEASES OF THE MAXILL- ARY SINUSES, which was published in The Ameixan ]oi nial of Dental Science of June 1842. After graduation Dr. Thackston opened an office for the practice of general dentistry in Farmville, Virginia. In the same year, 1842, he founded the Virginia Society of Surgeon Dentists and was elected to membership in the American Society of Dental Surgeons. Over the years he was a notable and prolific contributor to the Aniencan Journal of Dental Science. In 1850 he gave to the profession the Thackston Drill, which for many years was routine equipment for the opening of cavities in molar teeth. Dr. Thackston ' s demeanor as a professional man was impeccable. His high ethical standards and his readiness to express them did much to raise the prestige of dentistry. He came to be known as the Chesterfield of the Dental Profession. Never too busy to engage in any activity that would promote his profession he was elected in 1854, President of the Association of Alumni of Dental Colleges. With the coming of the Civil War he saw his duty and followed it, enlisting as a private in Com- pany D , 3rd Regiment of the Virginia Reserves. He was assigned by William Carrington, Medical Director of the Department of the Confederate Army, to serve as dentist at the Hospital in Farmville. Service to his state and region was exemplified by his election as President of the Virginia State Dental Association from 1872 to 1877 and again in 1887, and as President of the Southern Dental Association in 1887. Always ready to help dentistry move forward he served as a member of the first Virginia State Board of Dental Examiners in 1886. Age did not diminish his efforts in behalf of his chosen profession and at 70 he delivered the annual address at the 1890 meeting of the American Academy of Dental Science held in Boston on November 12. Realizing also his civic duties he served as Mayor of Farmville in 1888 and 1889. On December 8, 1899, after a long and fruitful life death came to Dr. Thackston, who through his efforts had helped to raise dentistry to the professional status it enjoys today. After 57 years of practice he was laid to rest in his chosen home of Farmville, leaving behind an indebted and enlightened pro- fession. ■{12}- SENIORS LtBRARY UN,VERS,TV0P.w.H,, 0 BALTiMORt he 3 eniopS • CLASS OFFICERS Fresldent: Aaron J. Golberg Student Senate Representatives: Michael A. Costrino, James P. Norris It seems only yesterday that one hundred and ten students cHmbed the three flights of stairs to the financial office to pay a bill which was entitled School: Dentistry Class: Freshman. Nov , having paid our last tuition, we are suddenly realizing that the long-awaited day of graduation is soon to be a reality. Looking back over the curriculum, parts of which we thought to be illogical and unimportant at the time of participation, we now appreciate the need for such basic, knowledge-impregnating courses. Even at the beginning of our clinical work we found that we had to draw upon this previously gained education for facts that might answer actual patient problems. We also must be grateful to our educators who, in their unjust manner, instilled into us the content of their respective courses. Yes, we finally can visualize the need for a program designated to mold us into dentists who would be able to face their professional future assuredly with the knov ledge and un- derstanding befitting such Individuals. Now that all of our days at the B.C.D.S. are at an end, we look forward to the pro- fessional years ahead of us, not with complete uneasiness, but with that warm confi- dence in the back of our minds that we have the best attainable training in the dental field. For this contribution, we, the seniors of 1956, would like again to thank our alma mater and wish it a continuance of greatness in the future years. ■{l4 JioHorary President OF THE Clais of 19 6 DR. Hall, John D. Vachon In the fall we returned. Ready, eager and nervous. For two years we had antici- pated the day when we would begin to operate on patients. The clinic at last! Through the halls echoed the cries: My jacket ' s too long! Where do you put all this equip- ment? What do I do next, Doctor? I can ' t get any patients. Hov will I finish by June? Fiowever, the confusion of the first few weeks soon resolved itself as we began to learn our way around. And the cries changed: Stood up again! Who has a chair at 3:00 they ' re not using? I ' ll never finish by June. Because of our preoccupation with the clinical aspects of our work, it took a round of exams to remind many of us that the classes are also an important part of a Junior ' s life. Nevertheless, with all the worry, there was time for fun and relaxation. Satur- day night nearly always saw a party of some sort, and the major event of our social season — the Junior Class Dance — was a huge success. Suddenly it was spring. Requirements only half completed. Fiurry! Hurry! I need gold work. You think you got troubles? and I ' ll never finish by June. But finish we did — just in time — and though we complained loudly and often, we wouldn ' t have had it otherwise. -{56}- First Raw: Cruteau, Buonomano, Cabana, Cuhui. The knowledge gained in the Freshman year was neatly filed in its place. Operative, Bacteriology, Physiology, and Prosthetics were heaped upon us. The segments of the preparative process were also assimilated and combined with previous knowledge. We are becoming Dentists! This one thought begins to unfold in our minds. Pontics may crack, foils may come loose, and lab reports may have to be redone — in spite of all, we are becoming Dentists. We have progressed from the embryo stage as Freshmen, through the infant stage of the Sophomore year. We now prepare to enter the adolescence of our life work. Ahead lies the adult period as practitioners. We realize the importance of the next two years at school in the maturation process. Keep your eyes open at the B.C.D.S. At the welcoming address by Dean Aisenberg, we embarked on our training of thirty scheduled hours of theoretical and practical learning in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Histology and Dental Materials. With the helpful guidance of both faculty and upperclassmen, we hurdled the first lap of the year, and eagerly anticipated our second semester. March brought a recovery from February exams and a period of expectancy vintil Easter vacation. The year wasn ' t all work, however; for we becaine acquainted with the School of Nursing and Goucher College, and we were well represented at all the school dances. The second semester also promised more social activity, with fraternity rushing and our own Freshman Dance, at which we played host to the other classes. The Freshman Class emerged from its first year of dental training proud of our progress and accomplishments, and grateful to the members of the faculty who guided us. With our year now completed, we are anxious to begin the Sophomore year. -{64 First Row: Lee, W. G., Crowley, Conner, Lee, R. L., Lopez, Cartisano, Hansen. Brehne, Levin, Keener, Krampf. GORGAS ODONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY Membership in the Gorgas Odontological Society signifies outstanding academic achievement and leadership in our School and in our profession. Each year, invitations for membership are given to those Juniors who stand in the first thirty percent of their class. The Society, formed in 1916, is named in honor of Dr. Ferdinand J. S. Gorgas, an outstanding graduate of our School who was a widely recognized leader in the field of dental education and a very important contributor to the literature. Monthly meetings afford members educational opportunities not presented in the curriculum. Social activities, as well as educational, are enjoyed periodically throughout the school year.
