Student Government sponsored the demonstration. Stewart Doty, chairman of the council of colleges, said that the rally was the 23rd official strike in UMO history. The first was in 1 872 when faculty and administrators joined students in protest of the low quality of tea and moldy bread on campus. he said. Chants of we want Silverman” and we want Chancellor McCarthy echoed across the Mall, but to no avail. Although Silverman. McCarthy. Governor Brennan and Dr. Stanley Evans, chairman of the board of trustees, had been invited to speak at the rally, all had refused. Silverman said one reason that he disapproved of the rally was that it interfered with classes. Why was it tied to walking out of classes? he asked. In spite of the prominently displayed absences. Student Government members thought the walkout and rally were successful. We've shown that students do care. said Student Government Vice President Donnie Oakes. This year at UMO, students interested in a military career after graduation could join the Army or Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps. The AFROTC program began its first year at UMO with 52 cadets. Next year, enrollment is expected to double. In both Army and Air Force ROTC programs, any full-time student in good academic standing is welcomed. Both branches require that a cadet sign a contract in his junior year before he can enter the advanced program. In exchange for committing himself to the military, the cadet in the advanced program receives $1 □□ per month and is commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Army or Air Force after completing a ROTC program and receiving a baccalaureate degree from his college. Scholarships are offered by both the Army and the Air Force to students with good grade point averages. These scholarships pay for tuition, textbooks and lab fees. Army ROTC offices are located in the Memorial Gym; Air Force ROTC offices are in the basement of Fernald Hall. Inquiries are welcome. r — ais 0) L 0 c 0 n r« TOOO ti'je. When you think about it. he may be right. You wait in cafeteria lines, bookstore checkout lines, check-cashing lines, post office lines. Bear’s Den lines and concert tickets lines. You must always wait to talk to your advisor, the financial aid office or the business office. And don't forget the textbook annex at the beginning of each semester — or the dormitory sign-up lines at the end of the year — or the shower lines each morning at 8:30. All this, and we haven't even left campus. Off-campus is more waiting — at stop signs, traffic lights, checkout lines, doctors' offices, and hairdressers. Behind slow-moving cars and slow walking people we wait with clenched fists. Waiting is probably a national pastime — we must spend more time waiting than enjoying baseball, hotdogs. apple pie and Chevrolet. i Exam is a four-letter word. All other dirty words in the English language (except for term paper ) can't compare with the horrors the dreaded word exam can bring to the minds of students. It's bad enough preparing for one exam, but if a student has five classes with four exams in each course, he has to prepare himself for 20 all-nighters, gallons of iava. and endless packages of No-Doze. And that's only for one semester. If a student is on the four-year plan, which is Quickly being replaced by the seven-year plan, he will have taken 1 GO plus exams before graduating. No wonder so many students consume massive quantities of alcohol and behave like they are on a field trip from BMHI, The futile thing about exams is that once a student crams all the information into his skull, he only has to regurgitate it on paper. How long after that will he remember what he spit into his blue book? Chances are he'll be able to recall what happened on yesterday's General Hospital” more clearly than the date when civilization began. That says a lot for the effect of soaps on the brain and not too much for college courses and their exams. X — 309 Why? Why does college exist? Students ponder over this question every time they get back a bad exam or are up all night writing a term paper on some theory they won't have a clue about once it is written. You're at college to learn and prepare yourself for a high-paying job when you graduate. say Mom and Dad. The line have fun but remember what you're there for is also a parental phrase. An often-repeated one at that. Some students wonder if they'll ever wake up from the nightmare called college. Deep down they know college will help them in the clue and cash departments once they are thrown out into the real world. Unfortunately, the road leading to reality seems long and winding and full of potholes and dangerous curves — all of which lead to academic probation. In the freshman summer camp days college didn't seem to be as bad as many had imagined. They even thought it was fun. Going to frat parties, drinking themselves into oblivion and skipping classes, all without parental haggling. It was independence. But once their junior year rolled around, they realized it would be only a short time before reality would have to be faced. Pulling all-nighters, skipping classes and going to wild parties now warranted careful consideration. Studies began to take priority over partying. The students wanted some ammunition to ensure their safety when UMO finally cut the umbilical cord. Y — 31 1 Z END 312 i
