w When and as you look back on your undergraduate years at the Univer- sity. you will, if you are fairly typi- cal. remember most vividly the pleasant occasions. You will recall the concerts, the games, the rap sessions, the kooks, certain exciting faculty members, the bashes and the successful causes for which you fought Being human you will forget the numerous frustrations, the add- and-drop periods, the stuffy admin- istrators and faculty and the other gripes you had while here. The ca- pacity of men and women to retain the pleasant while rejecting the un- pleasant is a fortunate characteris- tic we all share. The University has tried with vari- able success. I must admit, to work with students as human beings rather than with students as com- puter numbers. Modern society tends to dehumanize life and this is not good. We have tried consciously and conscientiously as a matter of University policy to individualize the college experience. Hopefully every office and every official on this campus is ready and willing to meet students to talk with them, listen to them and take student thinking into account as decisions are made. To the extent this is true, the college experience should have been more pleasant. 3 It may sound unreasonably corny, if so sobeit. but it is well to recognize that undergraduates at Maine are in themselves a source of inspiration Students are open, honest and sin- cere. This being true, the rest of us are encouraged to react in the same way. The students being what they are represent the best possible ex- planation as to why working for the University of Maine at Orono is both satisfymgand fun. Best wishes. WinthropC. Libby
