LIBBY X 2 _____w When and as you look back on your undergraduate years at the Univer- sity. you will, if you are fairly typi- cal. remember most vividly the pleasant occasions. You will recall the concerts, the games, the rap sessions, the kooks, certain exciting faculty members, the bashes and the successful causes for which you fought Being human you will forget the numerous frustrations, the add- and-drop periods, the stuffy admin- istrators and faculty and the other gripes you had while here. The ca- pacity of men and women to retain the pleasant while rejecting the un- pleasant is a fortunate characteris- tic we all share. The University has tried with vari- able success. I must admit, to work with students as human beings rather than with students as com- puter numbers. Modern society tends to dehumanize life and this is not good. We have tried consciously and conscientiously as a matter of University policy to individualize the college experience. Hopefully every office and every official on this campus is ready and willing to meet students to talk with them, listen to them and take student thinking into account as decisions are made. To the extent this is true, the college experience should have been more pleasant. 3 It may sound unreasonably corny, if so sobeit. but it is well to recognize that undergraduates at Maine are in themselves a source of inspiration Students are open, honest and sin- cere. This being true, the rest of us are encouraged to react in the same way. The students being what they are represent the best possible ex- planation as to why working for the University of Maine at Orono is both satisfymgand fun. Best wishes. WinthropC. As freshmen, we enrolled on a dry campus which advo- cated weekend dances in the gymnasium. We were fami- liarized with the Greek system and invited through “rush” to attend parties at each sorority or fraternity. We practiced an active night life on weekends, only to watch our watches in fear of arriving back to our dormi- tories late or getting our dates back too late for the 1 a.m. curfew. If that happened, the girl lived in fear for the next week of her scheduled confrontation with the stand- ards board or with the J-board. depending on the seri- ousness of the situation. Many of us. as naive 18 year-olds away from home per- haps. for the first time in our lives, took our first campus drink in the steam plant parking lot. As sophomores, the tension was relieved somewhat. The curfew system was relieved, and a parietal system was adopted whereby a girl could entertain a boy in her dor mitory room and vice-versa. The steam plant parking lot was abondoned for the first time in its existence. Students started keeping liquor in their rooms, properly hidden so that maids in their inspections could not find it. Stan Cowan. Senate president at that time, kept a well- organized and appreciated student government body. His leadership was effective and strong. Abenaki, an experimental college, was organized and took the campus over completely by surprise. Its cours- es. ranging in all topics, were offered to any individual of the community free of charge. Its courses, besides teaching individuals, offered to them the opportunity to interact informally with one another. And the Arts and Science requirements were lifted in some cases to relieve students of their freshmen and sophomore course loads. As seniors, we experienced a somewhat quiet year The swimming pool was completed and opened for the enjoyment of students. Students seemed totally preoccupied with finding jobs, which had gone from many to few in the last four years. Bill Eames. Senate president, led a very quiet and seldom heard from student government body. Bicycles overtook the campus in place of cars, eased the transportation on campus, and was a source of transpor- tation from class to class. And perhaps, over the past four years, the only remain- ing aggrevation which still prevailed on campus was the ever-present waiting lines. In four years we waited in lines to buy books, to eat. to go through add and drop, to see professors or deans, and to receive housing accomodations. As juniors, stronger steps toward a revolution on campus were taken. Pat's was given strong competition by Gam- bino's and the Shamrock. The Orono 18 raided the Council of Colleges meeting, were tried, and acquitted on probation. Their goal was to have these meetings opened to students and the public m the future. Chancellor McNeil was challenged by UMO students for his lack of interest and contributions to the campus in relation to his position. It was thought that he was ruin- ing the reputation of the university in the eyes of the state s voters. Women's Liberation moved to UMO and a sisterhood of liberationalists was organized on campus. Coed dormitories were established and experiments for their success were made. A swimming pool in the Memorial Gymnasium was in the process of being built. George Chick” Chalmers. Senate president, led a some- what disorganized student government body. His leader- ship was often marked by chaos and dissatisfied stu- dents. At one time, before the year's end. the Senate requested his resignation. Chalmers, however, did not resign. It's been four years of changes within the times, both on our UMO campus and within ourselves. 21 ✓ 24 25 ?8 1 29 30 32 36 37 38 PAUL BUNYAN WEEKEND 40 43 NURSERY SCHOOL r FOGLER LIBRARY N 49 R.O.T.C To the editor: It’s no wonder the Army gets so much bad publicity: they're imbeciles. Who else would stage a maneuver on opening day of deer season complete with automatic weapons and helicopters in a prime hunting area? They not only sent all the game into the next county and scared the hell out of six hunters, but also placed the ROTC students in undue jeopar- dy (Army boys don't wear iridescent orange and deer hunters use live ammunition). Chalk another one up for the Army. Irate Orono Citizen To the editor: In response to your letter from the Irate Orono Citizen, published in the Nov. 12 issue of the Maine CAMPUS, the Department of Military Science would like to set the record straight. First of all. the use of that portion of the University Forest for the Field Exercise had been cleared through the University Forestry Department for use several weeks prior to the Exercise. Second, the Military Department had been informed that no hunting was allowed in the University Forest. Subsequent to the Exercise, the Department was informed that it was an oversight by the Forestry Department that no mention was made that the portion on the other side of Interstate 95 does authorize hunting. Third, there are many ROTC stu- dents and ROTC staff, as well, who gave up the first day of hunting to participate in the Exercise, which, by the way. was quite successful, for the sole purpose of learning, so maybe someday you and your friends can continue to hunt in this great land because that guy who messed up your first day of hunt- ing in 1971. is out leading troops against an enemy who could pre- vent you from exercising that right you now have to freely hunt game. Dominic W. Ruggerio Major. U.S. Army Reprinted from the Maine CAMPUS 50 51 CVT'“ 53 S.A.C The Maine Student Action Corps is an association of members of the University of Maine community dedicat- ed to the goal of improving the status of the physically, mentally or socially handicapped. Not only will this be an improvement of the community, but members find that the effort is an advancement of themselves and an aid in their personal development Deeply concerned with the welfare of all persons, the Corps hopes, through community action, to create a bet- ter understanding and a greater degree of cooperation between members of the University community and the citizens of Maine. In addition to the community service of the Corps, the programs offer Corps members practi- cal experience in various areas of interest, increased awareness of the problems of society, and most all an opportunity to give of themselves for a fellow human being. The Corps wishes not only to work with the handi- capped directly but also to work on their behalf indirectly by increasing people's awareness of the needs of these people. The Big Brother and Big Sister programs work in the Capehart Housing Project on outer Ohio St in Bangor. In this low-income area many of the homes lack one parent and many of the children have never had any real adult companionship. It is the goal of the program to fulfill the need for this companionship — to provide a lasting friendship between the child and the older person who can provide the child with a much-needed example. These programs enable students to work with and expe- rience the |Oys which friendships with children can pro- vide and. in turn, the children are given a new friendship with an older person that probably would not have hap- pened if the Big Brothers and Big Sisters had not come into their lives. MSAC members who work at the Day Care Center on the U of M South Campus help the Center in its provision of very valuable time to mothers who might otherwise be confined to their homes with youngchildren. The tutoring project serves children of all school ages through programs in three Bangor schools — Abraham Lincoln. Harlow Street, and Bangor High. Through the project volunteers improve the chances a child may have for getting a good education and at the same time gain a valuable education for themselves. 54 Through MSAC volunteers the Bangor Day Activity Cen- ter receives assistance in achieving its goals of instruc- ting individuals in practical skills for home and commun- ity. in keeping the retarded out of institutions and in helping the parents of these individuals by giving them more freedom to live their own lives. The M.R. Club is concerned with individuals with some special problems. These are retarded young people with whom the Club meets once a week at the Work Skill De- velopment Center in Bangor for a social evening. The evening provides the young people with an opportunity to meet outside of their workday — for many this is their only such opportunity. Members of the M R. Club are able to exercise their skills in several areas including art. music, drama, and physical education. There is also the feeling of fulfillment from helping another person and from the reaching out to and the coming to understand these individuals who have always been considered special. The Cerebral Palsy Project works with the Center on South Campus. Volunteers act as aids under the supervi- sion of Center staff members and are able to work in ei- ther an entertaining or a tutoring capacity. Activity con- sists mainly of informal get-togethers which provide the teenagers at the Center with the opportunity to get to- gether in a less formal atmosphere than is possible in the school. Working in conjunction with Girl and Boy Scouts of America the Rural Recreation Project is designed to make available to children in rural areas the benefits of facilities and activities which are not otherwise readily available to them — cultural advancement, recreation, educational benefits and personal growth. Like nearly all projects of the MSAC. this project offers members the chance to exercise their own special skills and talents for the benefit of another person and for their own personal benefit. Like so many mental institutions. Bangor State Hospital is understaffed Patients require time and individual at- tention which |ust isn't possible without volunteer help. Volunteer visitors at both the State Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center chat with people who sit alone for days and need stimulation. For one whose day is quietly confined, a visitor can mean the difference between an- other day of institutionalized living and a day of special meaning. 55 b6 L 57 ________r abenaki experimental college many times we’ve been asked: what is abenaki what is abenaki trying to do what could I possibly teach and our answer has always been different abenaki is a spirit of sharing of building of change and growth, inside and outside and as you have changed and grown, so we have grown and changed with time, our goal is to form a better community, where all people can share in building a brighter future, together we hold the knowledge and wealth, and together we can afford whatever we need to build. craft center the question is not what we'll be doing when we get there, but rather how to go and teel good that you're going, going there is being there or at least almost being there, knowing what to do once you get there must be something like knowing what to do when you're anywhere, knowing what to do when, i guess that if we're going there anyway we might as well start now. beginning to start to go is what most of these songs are about, getting there i ain't wrote about yet. i don't know if i ever will, i don't know if it could be wrote down anyway, arlo guthrie it is in tact nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry: for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom: without this it goes to wrack and ruin without fail. albert einstein think about the kind of world you want to live and work in. what do you need to know to build that world? demand that your teachers teach you that. kropotkm ---- MAINE MASQUE 62 BILLY BUDD I had no sooner gotten into the room, when I began look- ing for some way out. And if it hadn't been crowded. I probably would have found one. Then, succumbing to all that is cowardly and convenient. I'm sure I would have scurried right thru the nearest exit and vanished into the night. It all started when I saw a poster that said. Tryouts. In the Green Room. No Experience Necessary — signed by the Maine Masque. Well, this struck me as a Very Friendly Thing, that they were so open in their audition invitation, so (I recklessly decided). Why Not Take Them Up On It? And that was how I happened to find myself stranded in the Green Room that night, desperately searching for someway out. I had come to these Green Room auditions with all man- ner of vital security mechanisms. I sat sweating in a cor- ner. fiercely sucking lozenge after lozenge of my trusty menthol-eucalyptus cough drops, good for sore throats due to coughs, colds, or stage fright. I was additionally relieved to notice the familiar face of a girl I had met pre- viously. She was so friendly. I assumed she was as green as I was. and gratefully spoke to her on this level (It was a bit embarassing to later learn that she was an officer of the Masque — yet in a way it was comforting as well). As I sat there I kept repeating to myself a whole slew of comforting success stories — an excellent courage sti- mulus. Admittedly, some were of the far-fetched Lana- Turner-Was-Discovered-ln-A-Soda-Fountain school. Oth- ers. though were more plausible and appropriate to my circumstance. For example, there was the story of the girl who very nearly left tryouts when someone superci- liously informed her that most freshman knew better than to have the Gall to try out for a Maine Masque show. Happily, she went ahead anyway, and from that first freshman audition, got her first Maine Masque part, and went on to subsequently become a president 01 the Masque. I really like that story I also happened to be a freshman, and it was nice to know that it could happen. In my case, though, it didn’t. I was disappointed, of course, but at least a little surer of myself for tryouts the following month, and Lo and Behold ... I didn't make L 63 that play either. BUT. (and this is an important But) this time I did get called back for final auditions, so you can clearly see how swiftly the level of my failure was rising! Remind me to tell you sometime about the stealthy art of checking an It'sabouttimeforgod'sake Cast List. If you're a pro at it. your technique will consist of peering out of hidden doorways, and skulking to the fateful bulletin during one of the few moments when the hall is deserted. Otherwise, you've got to brave your way thru the stares of the Whole World, as they witness you either choking back stifled sobs, or dancing gleefully about like a maniac. I think, though, that even if I had gone the whole year without getting further than my menthol-eucalyptus sucking Green Room corner, my association with Maine Masque would still have been worthwhile. For one thing. I discovered a very important distinction within the thea- tre department: although the organization known as Maine Masque is the official lifeblood of nearly all theatr- ical activity at UMO. official dues-paying membership is not necessary for participation in any capacity of produ- ction. Nor does official membership automatically bind you inextricably to production work. In other words, if you |ust want to hang around quietly for awhile without committing yourself to anything specific, go ahead. However. I think you'll soon find that separating mem- bership from active participation is almost impossible, because either way you may miss too much fun! Case in point: The day after my unremarkable audi- tion. I presented myself somewhat apologetically at the set construction shop, saying that I didn't think I would be much good, but I might be able to help. I was right — I wasn't much good. But I did learn a few things, (some of which actually pertained to set construction). That’s the good thing about hanging around the boards — you pick up all kinds of inside info through the theatre grapevine you also begin talking like a second-rate Variety col- umnist. Anyway, you do become aware of important things, like the Mighty Green Room Bulletin Board. All- Purpose Information Centre. This little board serves as everything from mailbox to posting place for more ob- scure cast calls, such as those for the many excellent 64 1 student-produced lab shows. Such opportunities are plentiful, if you know where to look for them — especial- ly backstage. In addition to set crew, there's the Make-up department — here you get to see all the boys in the cast discreetly thickening and masculinizing the penciled character whiskers they’ve been given, while the girls furtively rub off as many lines and wrinkles as they can get away with, so as not to appear unattractive, even if playing a seven- ty-two year old hag. (And it's always fun afterwards to count how many pizza places suddenly decide to close for the night when your lipsticked guys stop in for a post- rehearsal snack. If needlecraft is more to your liking, you're ecstatically welcomed into the ranks of the costume clan. I want your bodies. the costume chairgirl blithely announces to the startled cast and again it's great fun. during measurements, to see how the male victims can hold out. maintaining. “No. I am not holding my breath — this is my normal posture. I feel perfectly fine. And my chest size is really forty-two. The female dialogue is equally good: Now don't forget. I've got on this bulky sweater over bulky jeans and I just came from lunch — I take a size nine, and it's simply ridiculous to put down my hips as forty-two. your tape measure must be backwards, be- lieve me. that costume will fit like a sack. Above all, working behind the scenes, you learn the car- dinal rule you'll find to be exceedingly useful in later life. This is simply. If all else fails. Trim it! A lopsided dress hem? Trim it with lace! An uneven window pane? Trim it with molding! A face lacking in character? Trim it with warts! Play around with it — have fun with the combina- tions! you might even try lacing your face, molding your dress, or warting your window frame. What the heck — the important thing is Trim it! And as the performance date draws nearer, the work grows more feverish, and you all grow more close, with your own collection of screamingly funny inside jokes, your own gripes, your own headaches, and ultimately, your own opening night that makes it all worthwhile. Now. there's little I can think of to say that hasn't already been said and sung and tap-danced to death about the excitement of Opening Night. The thrill is indescribable, anyway, so who am I to even try and describe it? ( the delicious panic that overcomes everyone when you hear the Mounting Audience Noise of rustling programs and incoming people — coming to see you! the whis- pered Good lucks and Break-a-legs and curses and prayers by everyone involved, the greasepaint, the laugh- ter. the lighting, the props, the audience that lifts you when you're down There! You see? It can't be done without bursting into a rousing round of Irving Berlin!) But when the houselights go down, the audience settles, and the long awaited curtain goes up you finally know that Maine Masque is a reality, and that you are lucky enough to be a part of it. Corny, okay — but true. Of course, it's over all too soon, and no matter what may have come before, the incredible fact that the play is over is so terribly sad. So. naturally, there's only one thing left to do — to go the cast party and get good and drunk. The air there rings with congratulations and hilar- ity and maybe a few depressed tears until some blessed someone comes out with. Refrigerated in the pines of northern Maine, perhaps the fra- ternities and sororities are being temporarily preserved in the secluded Orono deep-freeze But nobody seems concerned. 8eer busts, spring outings and weekend social activities remain the driving force. 8lood. cancer, and March of Dimes drives, big brother programs and cash donations to local chari- ties add philanthropic legitimacy to me Greek scene. The eighteen fraternities are all basically similar but vary slightly as brothers congregate around common interests, be they locks, techies, or aggies. Each of the ten sororities maintains its character through the individuality of its members Phi osophicai changes have helped to keep fraternities alive at Maine. The racial and ethnic barriers have been lifted. The secret society im- age has changed. The days of not so long ago when no one but a select few knew what went on behind the red door at Kappa Sigma or under the green roof of Phi Eta Kappa are in the past. Fraternities have opened up Forced to compete socially with the liber- alized dormitory system, most fraternities have converted cellar space into attractive lounges and bar rooms where brothers and friends fre- quently meet Sororities at Maine hold no particular social status or distinction. A soronty girl at the U. of Rhode Island commented. You'll notice that most of the straight people on this campus are the Greeks. On the UMO campus no such distinction can be made Much of the stmg has been taken out of Hell week Vicious paddling of pledges by alcohol-enthused brothers has given way to indoctrination programs focusing on fraternal obligations and house responsibili- ties The fraternity board (UMFB). under the guidance of William Lucy, as- sistant dean of student acitivites. has implemented an open rush pro- 126 gram. This program affords prospective pledges a longer and more re alistic scrutmization of the fraternity system, thus reducing much of the high-keyed S3ies pitches the rushces were faced with m the past. Panheiienic council is the governing body for the ten sororities on campus which performs a coordinating service for the sororities dur mg rush m the fall. Panhell sets up an unbiased Clearing House to take care of the business of invitations and bid matching. The fraternity system may not be as solid as the UMFB would have you believe Some houses have experienced financial problems. In at- tempts to keep alive, they have resorted to rushing bodies rather than individuals, in some cases business relationships have replaced frater- nal. and Have you paid your bill has replaced How are you. program Or they could lead to the passing of 3t least some fraternities Sorority 3nd fraternity charters 3nd creeds preach scholarship, leader- ship. social awareness and unity. And to varying degrees these are practiced Greek spirit and cohesion runs the continuum from rah-rah to blah. One house may prepare for an intramural basketball game like it were the super bowl, others can't even get together for a party The sororities as well as the eighteen fraternities do provide varying de- grees of enthusiasm and activity appealing to a wide range of students. Whether the UMO fraternity system is as internally sound as statistics lead you to believe remains to be seen What seems important is that rush has been up dated, the quotas are generally met. and the budgets are balanced Conditions like this threaten to breed disscntion among a brotherhood and eventual collapse of house spirit. But these are internal problems and don't appear on the monthly balance sheets and UMFB reports. They may remedy themselves or be overcome by a concerted rush And at least for the time being fraternities and sororities serve to keep over 1300 UMO students from going stir crazy from November to April when heavy snows and freezing winds threaten to force the soul into hibernation. SPORTS Battling the wealthier athletic departments of the Yan- kee Conference, the Black Bears have had difficulties remaining competitive against theoretically superior athletes. As the perennial underdog, the Bears have been forced to try harder, with extra efforts often ending in nothing more than frustrating defeat. For the 1972 UMO athletes there were some commendable victories and humiliating losses. 158 Ib9 A lack of money and a limited recruiting ground in general gave Maine opponents an edge, but a fierce competitive spirit and an unselfish sacrifice of time and ambition left Maine competitors with victories in the win and loss column. Maryland, and New Jersey. Handed a no-hitter in the first game of a double-header at Princeton, the Bears re- grouped to defeat them in the second game, as well as the next seven opponents they faced on the trip. As Maine returned to Yankee Conference play, the competition was tougher with UConn and UMass well-staffed. Tough pitching by UConn cost the Black Bears two games, but they clawed back, scoring a double victory over UMass. and gain- ing a second-place tie in the Yankee Conference and a 20-7 overall record.
