FOREWORD Between the covers of the 1949 Pyisiit are re- minders of busy days and nights, the speeding weeks of changeable Maine seasons, familiar faces, activities, and events of the college years. This Prism is designed to help preserve these moments for the comint; vears. ' )- The brief but important stay of each student at our University opens the door to friends, learn- ing, new and different experiences and activities. Graduation provides a climax to college life. But, a diploma does not and should not retire the true college spirit. It remains, beneath the surface per- haps, a constant reminder of an important period of individual development. The 1 949 P)is)7i attempts to present more than a mere record of a college year. It hopes that it has successfully recorded an important section of the pattern of progress of the University of Maine, which, like the human race, works for tomorrow, ever filled with the desire for a more completely satisfactory way of life.
