One of the foremost scientists of the game of roundball is Bernard L. ‘‘Peck’’ Hickman. His great knowledge of the game has been an attribute to the intercollegiate activities of the University of Louisville. Since 1944, Coach Hickman has a life time winning percentage of .704 for 599 games. This outstanding record makes Peck Hick- man one of the ten coaches in games won in the nation. This past season Coach Hick- man guided the redbirds to 17 wins against only 9 losses while playing in the N.I.T. and the Missouri Valley Conference. The Univer- sity of Louisville is indeed honored and privi- leged to have a man of Bernard L. Hickman’s genius at the helm of its basketball team. When it was all over, Chi Omega and Nu Sigma Chi had won the Annual Barbershop Quartet Contest. The University’s other singing contest, the Fryberger Sing, is one in which en- tire fraternities and sororities enter, plus a usual large group from the women's dorm, Threlkeld Hall. Winners of the 28th Sing, held May 5, 1965, were Threlkeld Hall in the women’s division and Phi Kappa Tau in the men’s division. “The Kentucky Derbies,’’ Nu Sigma Chi’s winning barbershop quartet. Rallying, breakfasting, and working at the polls in twos, it was an unprecedented, concerted effort by 1,400 faculty mem- bers and students working together. The co-operation payed off with the passage of both issues by an overwhelming majority. From these bonds the University stands to gain some $26 million which is to be used for a new medical-dental complex, a new community college, more classrooms, and a natural history museum to be built on cam- pus. In the celebration that followed the victory, the University expressed its gratitude to all those who had participated and it voiced the hope that this enthusiasm would continue in all phases of campus life. 181 eeren by: semen errno ea mone owen 8 ey na A EL CRIN AP ian SN ; a a ee eee aed mw a oy ces 9 ae etn tb 0 ” - a al Ni ie ae alti att So in a a A FLL Nae ee OF Ie La La ee te EL TN = i | sie eat a cin SE Dee eal ial ET OP IT ET, hl Bacio al eM in ih a Os Se ol is — 183 And indeed, student enthusiasm did con- tinue. December made it painfully clear that the apathy, so often attributed to the student body, had vanished. An attempted demonstration to protest the draft card law drew enthusiastic stu- dents by the hundreds. But the demonstra- tion leader was never allowed to speak. The crowd drowned the speaker’s voice with shouts and songs and pelletted the demonstrators with eggs, water-balloons, and tomatoes. Faculty member, Mr. Weber, and relig- ious advisor, Syngman Rhee appealed to the crowd to let the demonstrators speak. But a mob roared back and fired another round of plastic response, and free speech, as well as “The Thinker,’’ was smothered in debris. As the demonstrators retired the field and the TV cameras were folded, it looked as though the great collegiate response to every issue would prevail. But that response did not prevail. For while the Cardinal's Letter- Nam between four faculty members that drew an attentive audi- to-the-Editor column ran hot with campus-wide concern, many ence that packed Bigelow Hall. Driskell Department of English — SX = This past year has been a good year for the University of Louis- ville, a productive year, an exciting year. The outstanding event, of course, was the passage of the City Bond Issue, of which seven million dollars comes directly to the University. As welcome as this financial support is, the Bond Issue brought other benefits to us. It welded faculty, students, and staff together in a common effort. Never, in my fifteen years at the University, have | seen such untiring, devoted work and school spirit. You, the students, were superb. You entered into public affairs in a big way, and you had an important part in the life of this community. The University of Louisville is no ivory tower and should not be. All over the country a change has been taking place in the student bodies of colleges and universities. This change can simply be expressed in one sentence: College students are no longer inter- ested in learning to be adults; they are adults, participating in an experience which must be relevant to life when they leave college. They work for bond issues; they vote in Kentucky; they fight in Viet Nam. It is our earnest hope that we may have made your experience at the University a fruitful one and that it has portrayed life at its best. Inasmuch as we have done this, we have succeeded; where we have not, we have failed. We can only know for sure when we see how you live in the years after you leave college. We wish for you happy, successful, productive lives. Philip Davidson President 209 J. Murray Kinsman, Vice President William J. McGlothlin, Vice President Woodrow M.
