This is a book about a year and the people who made it. The ones who walked through the double-paned glass doors of the Library and ambled across a springtime campus hand-in-hand instead of studying for zoology. The ones who soaped the fountain and Marched for Football, who wrote letters to the editor and who did not write letters to the editor (6942 strong, the latter.) Ones who suggest- ed in all seriousness that an albino turkey be dyed red as a panacea for football ills. Ones who never went to class but Xeroxed their buddies’ notes page by page. And the ones who drove to class from the dormitory lot. This book is the story of the people and the year.

The University’s location in the middle of an urban area which is being torn down by Urban Renewal results in a mixture of acade- mic serenity and social urgence, an atmosphere reflected by the student body itself in its extremes of classical scholars and liberal agi- tators. The Bronx and Paducah send their young people to study here; accents of Ala- bama, Cleveland, and Djakarta mingle on campus. The gathering places provide a field day for budding sociologists. It is different from last year and two years from now the situation will have become merely nostalgic. Dormitory students stick together; Louisville independents hang around the back of the SUB or go home for lunch, while the Lambda Chi’s have become extroverted lately, often emerg- ing from the chapter house for lunch. Ivy League drop-outs, like in past years, maintain headquarters in the first six tables of the SUB, and Delta Upsilon favors the Cardinal Inn. Patrons of the defunct Golden Horseshoe now swell the Wednesday and Saturday night crowds at the Zanzibar, UL’s answer to Maury’s.
