The ones who walked through the double-paned glass doors of the Library and ambled across a springtime campus hand-in-hand instead of studying for zoology. The ones who soaped the fountain and Marched for Football, who wrote letters to the editor and who did not write letters to the editor (6942 strong, the latter.) Ones who suggest- ed in all seriousness that an albino turkey be dyed red as a panacea for football ills. Ones who never went to class but Xeroxed their buddies’ notes page by page. And the ones who drove to class from the dormitory lot. This book is the story of the people and the year. The University’s location in the middle of an urban area which is being torn down by Urban Renewal results in a mixture of acade- mic serenity and social urgence, an atmosphere reflected by the student body itself in its extremes of classical scholars and liberal agi- tators. The Bronx and Paducah send their young people to study here; accents of Ala- bama, Cleveland, and Djakarta mingle on campus. The gathering places provide a field day for budding sociologists. It is different from last year and two years from now the situation will have become merely nostalgic. Dormitory students stick together; Louisville independents hang around the back of the SUB or go home for lunch, while the Lambda Chi’s have become extroverted lately, often emerg- ing from the chapter house for lunch. Ivy League drop-outs, like in past years, maintain headquarters in the first six tables of the SUB, and Delta Upsilon favors the Cardinal Inn. Patrons of the defunct Golden Horseshoe now swell the Wednesday and Saturday night crowds at the Zanzibar, UL’s answer to Maury’s. UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Where have you been since ten? At the Fashion Post. What all did you buy? Two club ties. It took you three hours to buy two ties? Well, I dropped by Sam’s to return the swim- ming trunks I borrowed last year at the club. Ted, where are you going tonight? To hell and back. Who’s Helen Back? “As regards kissing, a wager may be laid as to which will get hold of the lips of the other first. If the woman loses, she should pretend to cry, should keep her lover off by shaking her hands, and turn away from him and dispute with him saying, ‘let another wager be laid’. If she loses this a second time, she should appear doubly distressed, and when her lover is off his guard or asleep, she should get hold of his lower lip, and hold it in her teeth, so that it should not slip away, and then she should laugh, make a loud noise, deride him, dance about, and say whatever she likes in a joking way, moving her eyebrows, and rolling her eves.” The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana 10 der a x BRE Sa 16 17 “Where is the Hellene woman who guards this temple? The competition, to draw alumni of the University ostensibly home to applaud, and incidentally to contribute, was won by Lambda Chi Alpha and Chi Omega; Theta Tau and Pi Beta Phi placed second. In the one pep rally of the year, coeds and fraternity men made it a point to create as much noise and confusion as possible, in a warm hearted attempt to pep up the football team’s sagging season effort. 61 Linesman Harry Bockman, above, also serves as ID checker before University sporting events. Harry has kept 3,472 tricksters as well as 759 students and 46 faculty members out of basketball games this year, plans a novel system for next year whereby all UL family members would be fingerprinted and checked at games. La Framboise was among the top 10 passers in the country for the second year, was second leading passer in the MVC. Perhaps the best lineman to wear Cardinal colors, Doug Buffone made the MVC All Star team and All American honorable mention. He will serve as captain of next year’s team after setting a new school record for defensive play with 138 tackles and 39 assists in 1964. 66 67 North Texas Blanks UL 22-0; Defeat Counts as Double Loss. —The Cardinal At left: Assistant Freshman Coach Harold Adams and Freshman Coach John Dromo. If it is true that, as Head Basketball Coach Peck Hickman said earlier this year, success is the true measure of a good coach, then the University has a fine one in him. In what was expected to be a year of rebuilding, the first season of MVC competition, Coach Hick- man led the Cardinals to a more than re- spectable 15-10 record, ending his twenty- first year of consistent and often spectacular success here. The 1965 Thoroughbred takes the occassion of his 400th win to express the appreciation of UL and the community for this outstanding contribution to the sports picture. Presidents of three student councils were independents, two of them run on Greek tickets . . . several independents won class office. An even bigger upset came with the Delta Upsilon-Lambda Chi Alpha combine sweep into leadership in the College student Council in the first election of this type open to the student body, which voted 800- strong. Greeks maintained a strong hold on most campus organizations at year’s end, however, with scarcely an independent to be seen as a beauty queen, officer of political power. An uprising by the dormi- tories was feared by combine leaders, who tried with uncertain success t o incorporate out-of-town students into already-existing political structures. Among top political figures of the year . . . David Huber, running the Phi Tau combine with a new soft-sell attitude . . . Stan Grubbs, the other side’s political dynamite who should win the top fraternity trophy for Delta Upsilon singlehandedly . . . Pickle Hirsch, least well-known political organizer on campus but the most powerful . . . Geoffrey Morris, in the background this year but passing out with one win at last under his belt. 83 Cre | § =a A = — — i a = aes — —} pas aad 84 Constructive activism, a rare phenomenon at this University, was shown by the group of students who spent three days of Spring Vacation working in various capacities with families in Spruce, Spring, and Carol Two, Ky. The students, many of them members of the United Campus Christian Fellowship, were led by Advisor Bob Baker in such activities as school-room renovation, out-house construction, and balloon’ inflation. The children of Spruce were introduced by their UL visitors to the delights of cultural learning; an Indian student, for example, demon- strated the intricacies of her sari. Super-star Lyman Johnson con- tributed to the physical life of the little community with a basketball exhibition, and the troup returned to the Big City, full of enthusiasm over people and life in Appalachia. 85 86 Close harmony and clever style gave Delta Upsilon’s Barbershop Quartet (above) first place in the annual singing contest held in March. Quartet members are Butch Gehring, Bill Scott, Gary Steedly, and Stanley Grubbs. Top sorority group was Chi Omega’s, on next page. Members are Nancy Gutekunst, Sandra Richardson, and Ann Jones. Not pictured is Linda Chadbourne. Second place winners were Kappa Delta and Phi Kappa Tau. 87 88 Focal point of the University social year is the annual Fryberger Sing, held in the Quadrangle each spring. Campus organizations compete for singing honors and top fraternity and sorority trophies, which cul- minate a year’s effort on the part of every Greek group to accumulate as many activity points as possible. Cwens, Mortar Board, and Omicron Delta Kappa tap their newly-elected members, and the student councils announce their outstanding undergraduate awards. In 1964 Phi Kappa Tau and Threlkeld Hall North took first place in the Fryberger Sing, with Chi Omega and Delta Upsilon coming in second. Phi Kappa Tau and Chi Omega received the Outstanding Fraternity and Sorority trophies. 89 And when thyself with shining Foot shall pass Among the Guests Star-scatter’d on the Grass, And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot Where I made one — turn down an empty Glass! Near- presidential candidate William Scranton, R.- Pa., spoke on the College Student Council’s Political Seminar Series this spring. Other speakers include Countess Alexandra Tolstoy (on this page), daughter of the novelist; Kansas Republican representative Ellsworth, keynoting the Mock GOP Convention; Carter Davidson, head of the liberal arts colleges association, who spoke on the Berkeley prob- lem; and Louis Leakey, noted anthropologist. Poets speaking here were Anthony Ostroff and Robert Sward, who entertained the Coffee House crowd with anecdotes on narcotics and reading of his poetry. Goldwater supporters nearly had it in the bag after weeks of concentrated back-room politics, but Scranton and Lodge advocates combined forces at the last minute to nom- inate the latter as Republican candidate for president at UL’s Mock GOP Convention last spring. David Osterlund and floor managers cried that the results, which also saw Senator Morton chosen for the vice presidential nom- inee, were contrary to actual national political facts, and were further mortified when the con- vention passed a platform calling for civil rights action. Cliff Travis was drawling as a southern radical; Frank Howe, head of the Connecticut delegation, surprised no one by going for Goldwater. 99 100 “Several hundred University students pro- tested the abolishment of UL’s football pro- gram during a mass rally in front of the Administration Building Wednesday night. “The Thinker joined students in wearing a black armband to mourn the ‘possible loss of football here’. The rally was intended by its Delta Upsilon ringleaders to organize student opposition to a recent Facualty Senate recom- mendation to abolish football. “The picketing students, numbering upwards of 300 by ten o'clock Wednesday night, were led by Delta Upsilon’s Larry Magnus. The crowd had dwindled to 25 by midnight. ‘‘It is wonderful to see such spirit,’ said Dean of Students Dave Lawrence, who was present for a few minutes at the rally, ‘but we can't get this many people out to a pep rally.” ” The Cardinal, Friday 12, 1965 102 Like most universities and colleges throughout the country, the Univer- sity of Louisville has been engaged in a building program. We have adopted an extensive and handsome plan for the development of Belknap Campus and are in the process of seeking funds for new build- ings in the Medical Center for our Medical and Dental Schools. These are not the only signs of progress at the University. We are proud that we have more Ph.D.’s on our faculty than ever before, that we secure a goodly number of Woodrow Wilson and Fulbright Fellowships each year, and that we can be more and more selective in choosing our freshman classes in all divisions. These are the outward and visible signs of success. They are not in themselves the measure of the strength of an institution. That strength comes from the character and quality of the people who make up the University students and faculty alike who must be united in a meaningful, coherent relationship, who have a common purpose and are working toward a common goal in which each has a real part. If an institution is to be effective in the sense that it has influence in the affairs of men, the separate groups that make up the University must have a sense of its larger purpose. They must be united in an under- standing of what they are trying to do. Then and then only, is there an inner and spiritual grace. In common, everyday language, it is people, not bricks, that make a university. And I think we have those people at the University of Louisville. Philip Davidson President 103 Woodrow M. The power of the masses remains effective through the instrumentality of mass-organizations, majorities, public opinion, and the actual be- haviour of vast multitudes of men. Yet this power only operates insofar as, from time to time, one individual or another makes the masses understand what they really want, and functions as their representative. Although in the apparatus there seldom appears a leader whose personal aims harmonize with the requirements of a huge aggregate of lives, and who is thus able to maintain his positio while incessantly working for the general advantage, such leaders are requisite now and again, and ‘the right man in the right place’ sometimes crops up as if by chance. Christine Rust, Outstanding Senior Woman. Mary K. Tachau, 1964 Arts and Sciences Out- standing Alumni Award. 174 175 The year saw a significant struggle for power between the Inter- fraternity Council and the Dean of Students. It was the first time that the Greek organization had forgotten its division into little fraternities and big fraternities in order to fight for additional power as a whole. Strongman for the IFC was Rodney Williams, who maintained that the IFC should rule in fraternity disciplinary matters like the Phi Kappa Tau case. Dean David Lawrence held out for Student Conduct Committee jurisdiction rights; Rodney fought it out on the floor of the Student Senate and in letters to the editor. At year’s end, legislation was pending and the power balance hung on the election of next year’s IFC president. 176 MUSIC SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL Seated: B. T. Kimbrough, President.
