Kesselman, Professor of Political Science and Department Head since 1951. Dr. Kesselman received his BA, MA, and his PhD at Ohio State University. He was appointed to the U. of L. faculty in 1947. He has lectured at the University of Oslow, and in 1960 was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship which enabled him to study at the University of Helsinki, Finland. As advisor of Sigma Alpha Pi, the political science honorary, he demonstrates his concern for students both individually and collectively. His interests are not only in the college, but also in the community, as is illustrated by his active participation as an arbitrator in labor disputes and his position as past president of the Louisville and Kentucky Civil Rights Unions. He was an enthusiastic participant in the year’s civil rights demonstration in Frankfort. Students see Dr. Kesselman in another role, as U. of L.’s number one basketball fan. He rarely misses a Cardinal home game. This was the year that was ... This was the year that was . . . was many of the routine aspects of a university and some of . . . Evidence of the inapplicability of the term ‘‘apathy’’ as applied to the students is shown by such demonstrations as this one reaction to the University’s policy on alcoholic beverages. ‘But there were those in the University whose appreciation for the good ole days was heightened by their experience with an overly- spirited student’s Gardiner Hall bomb threat. 7 4 Liberal tendencies, senses of humor, and fancy pen work were exhibited in various well-placed signs. t SEEN mT PRES ID Rie + SAR. This year was people . . . people engaged in the activities people are always engaged in... . and not engaged in the others such as studying the week after midterms. Dramatic offerings of the Collegiate Theatre and various independent groups such as the French Players shown here maintained their reputations for flawless productions. This year was also the four-hundredth birthday of William Shakespeare. Here faculty members Frank Kenworthy and Mary K. Tachau do their part to pay tribute to the Bard in ‘‘Who’s There?, ’ this year’s dramatic offering of the University Womens Club. The parking problem became more pressing with the increased enrollment. Some measure of the anxiety of students and faculty is evidenced by this photograph taken at 5:45 A.M. Governor Ned Breathitt was well received when he spoke in the 1963 gubornatorial cam- paign. The manifestations of a new spirit at U of L were many: The establishment of a group called Students. for Social Action, . . the hearty reception of former Socialist candidate for President of the United States, Norman Thomas by both allies and political foes, . and others. This was the year that the Buildings and Grounds Department made a desperate attempt at path-prevention with the erection of this genuine Western-style corral fence. 34 1964 saw the University’s souls vied for by Brother Price . . . . . . and others. You can’t say 1964 hasn't been. ) 3 iInistration Adm President Davidson’s Message The tragic assassination of President Kennedy brought to us all a new realization of the effect a single life can have on history and of the way our attitudes and behavior can influence others. As college graduates you will be the leaders of the future. Perhaps not many of you aspire to the Presidency, but there is no reason you may not aim as high as you please. It is even possible that you may literally go ‘‘ad astra per aspera.”’ | hope that as you leave the University you will feel it has helped you lay a strong foundation for that future. The aim of the faculty and administration has been to give you an education which would prepare you to meet the complex problems facing everyone—not just the problems of a career, but the far subtler ones of human understanding and kindness. As your graduation draws nearer and you become more restless-reluctant to leave your friends here, yet eager to have final examinations over and done with—remember that we in the administration feel about you the way a mother does when she sends her child off to the first grade: both proud and sad. 39 Board of Trustees Henry Y. It was a year of thanks; to Mrs. Stiffler, to Mr. Doherty, and especially to Larry Spitzer and The Courier Journal, for their encouragement advice, and cooperation. It was, among other things, a new office, hand-decorated by the staff in muted oranges, blues, yellows, and blacks. Our neighbors in Otter Hall, the United Campus Christian Fellowship, were displaced by the slightly less revelrous Rat Lab People. We got our typewriters cleaned. The Bethel Veech Otter Sun Deck emerged as a veritable hotbed of journalistic controversy. It was a year that passed quickly . . . it seems like only a couple of months since the 1963 book came out. Nevertheless it was a year of calm orderly progress on the yearbook. No trouble with deadlines . . . our final deadline is way off. Let’s see just when itis... On the other hand maybe this was the year that wasn’t. 317 INE PRINTING SINCE 1887— That’s the story of Foote Davies. Today we have one of the most modern and best equipped plants in the country.
