Dedication We of the 1963 Thoroughbred are happy and indeed proud to dedicate this book to Dr. Ernest C. Hassold. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Hassold began his association with the University of Louisville in 1927. Since then he has become the Chairman of the Division of the Humanities. A man of wide interests, Dr. Hassold is the author of two books, American Literary History Before the Civil War and The Humanities in General Educa- tion. He also has contributed innumerable articles to journals of Aesthetics, Art, English and Modern Languages. A distinguished scholar, an untiring worker, and, above all else, a teacher who has never ceased to give the best that he has to his students, Dr. Hassold sym- bolizes the ideal of a teacher, scholar and cultural historian. In many of his classes, he has said that the advancement of culture is the ultimate task assigned to the Humanities. Around such a man as Dr. Hassold this advancement has taken place, is taking place and will continue to take place. An outstanding scholar and an invaluable asset to the University of Louisville, we proudly dedicate the 1963 Thoroughbred to Dr. Ernest C. Hassold, Chairman of the Division of the Humanities.

College Life Registration =a = rye « wien) Basi Ll eT Alina lida! email m) ee College Life—the recapturing of all the events, large and small, important and trivial, that combine to form a school year. The year 1963 has been a period of many old and a few new occur- rences. The usual ordeals of orientation, registration and Greek rush were me- chanically endured by the upperclass- men and passed through by the dazed and confused freshmen. With football came Homecoming—long nights, even longer and sleepier days—all leading to the house decorations awards and the crowning of the Football Homecoming Queen. Festivities were put aside as mid-term exams produced the neces- sary stimulus to all-night cram sessions. This was followed by Christmas; more papers and final examinations; and, thrown in for good measure, the Thoroughbred Dance complete with Dr. Feelgood and the Interns. Basketball Homecoming, next on the agenda, brought still another Queen to U. of L. Barbershop was held and, as is past years, the judges provided the best entertainment. April was dedi- cated to watching the College Bowl team win and win again. U. of L.'s four consecutive victories were events not soon to be forgotten by the school, the city, and the state. Some of the ecstasy did die down for a short time as finals appeared followed by the pomp and circumstance of graduation. These were the major aspects of Col- lege Life—1963. Add to them the in- numerable little unremembered things —the Playhouse, the mixers, open houses, Fryberger Sing, building dedi- cations, and finally, the daily monoto- nous but variegated life that each U. of L. student lives and which, in reality, constitutes college life. This was 1963!
