Hassold. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Dr. Hassold began his association with the University of Louisville in 1927. Since then he has become the Chairman of the Division of the Humanities. A man of wide interests, Dr. Hassold is the author of two books, American Literary History Before the Civil War and The Humanities in General Educa- tion. He also has contributed innumerable articles to journals of Aesthetics, Art, English and Modern Languages. A distinguished scholar, an untiring worker, and, above all else, a teacher who has never ceased to give the best that he has to his students, Dr. Hassold sym- bolizes the ideal of a teacher, scholar and cultural historian. In many of his classes, he has said that the advancement of culture is the ultimate task assigned to the Humanities. Around such a man as Dr. Hassold this advancement has taken place, is taking place and will continue to take place. An outstanding scholar and an invaluable asset to the University of Louisville, we proudly dedicate the 1963 Thoroughbred to Dr. Ernest C. Hassold, Chairman of the Division of the Humanities. College Life Registration =a = rye « wien) ___ Basi Ll eT Alina lida! email m)_ ee College Life—the recapturing of all the events, large and small, important and trivial, that combine to form a school year. The year 1963 has been a period of many old and a few new occur- rences. The usual ordeals of orientation, registration and Greek rush were me- chanically endured by the upperclass- men and passed through by the dazed and confused freshmen. With football came Homecoming—long nights, even longer and sleepier days—all leading to the house decorations awards and the crowning of the Football Homecoming Queen. Festivities were put aside as mid-term exams produced the neces- sary stimulus to all-night cram sessions. This was followed by Christmas; more papers and final examinations; and, thrown in for good measure, the Thoroughbred Dance complete with Dr. Feelgood and the Interns. Basketball Homecoming, next on the agenda, brought still another Queen to U. of L. Barbershop was held and, as is past years, the judges provided the best entertainment. April was dedi- cated to watching the College Bowl team win and win again. U. of L.'s four consecutive victories were events not soon to be forgotten by the school, the city, and the state. Some of the ecstasy did die down for a short time as finals appeared followed by the pomp and circumstance of graduation. These were the major aspects of Col- lege Life—1963. Add to them the in- numerable little unremembered things —the Playhouse, the mixers, open houses, Fryberger Sing, building dedi- cations, and finally, the daily monoto- nous but variegated life that each U. of L. student lives and which, in reality, constitutes college life. This was 1963! The Sub, located in the University Center Building, is the center of student activity. Here, the students ign ore academic pressures and turn their minds to more important matters such as food, cards, and bull sessions. Bridge 101 7 Open Houses “T told you to leave my man alone!’ “Larry, please let’s dance—I promise not to clumsy.” The inevitable milling crowd. Tom Sturgeon and Alice Pleiss take time out to offer mutual congratulations. Thoroughbred Dance One of the highlights of each school year is the Thoroughbred Dance, which is sponsored by the yearbook staff. At this time, the winners of the Mr. and Miss Thoroughbred contests are an- nounced. Mr. Thoroughbred is chosen by popular vote of the women students, whereas Miss Thoroughbred is selected on the basis of a picture submitted to John Robert Powers Modeling Agency in New York. The 1963 dance was held at the Henry Clay Hotel complete with the sounds of Dr. Feelgood and the Interns. The smiles, trophies, and flowers of the winners. The “dry” Thoroughbred Dance offered a myriad of reactions from the participants. “It’s not that I don’t like you, but Mother said. . .” ‘No, I’m sure no one noticed our leave-taking.” Melanie and Dave pose for the yearbook! Miss Thoroughbred Court—Powers’ job not an easy one Isn’t it terrible how modern cokes come unmixed? Homecoming A winning house decoration requires much prepara- tion. Participants must endure every kind of discom- fort—dirty clothes, lack of sleep, paint-infested hair and, this year, torrents of rain. 1 rl ‘a ww . a : Key e Fag 1%} ee «2p tees . Convocations Intense heat did little to deter a capacity crowd when Senator Barry Goldwater spoke at a convoca- tion sponsored by the A S Student Council. Campus Elections The most obvious result of campus elections is the fact that not one build- ing, tree, or lamp post is free from the campaigners’ warped idea of decor, Each student seeking an office feels called upon to distribute signs bearing his name and some snappy little caption to every space not used by his oppo- nents. Platforms are unheard of, but each campaigner does manage to es- tablish a symbol for himself. Thus his fellow students vote for the person who uses Charlie Brown, Dennis the Menace, Freddie, etc., on his posters. Despite this childish approach, a few good leaders are elected. Christmas Students feel the excitement of Christmas before vacation begins, as trees are decorated and placed in various campus buildings. Barbershop The Barbershop Quartet Competition is held annually at the University. Any organization on campus is invited to enter a quartet in either the men's or women's division. Judges for this are members of the Society for the Preser- vation of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Not only do the judges render decisions, but they also show the participants and the audience how Barbershop singing should sound as they entertain with old favorites. 35 Two models for the Fall Style Show prepare to make Bathing suits proved to be the most popular item, at least from the spectators’ point of view. the long walk. Faculty Spotlight Mr. Charles L. Newman Kent School of Social Work 52 Salutamus Te, the traditional salute of Omicron Delta Kappa, is borrowed by the 1963 Thoroughbred as it inaugu- rates a recognition of outstanding faculty members throughout the Uni- versity. The professors acknowledged here were chosen not only because of their outstanding scholastic and aca- demic achievements within their spe- cific fields, nor simply because they represent the ultimate in their profes- sion, nor again due to some special service or project they performed for the University. These considerations did indeed play an important part in their selection. Above all else, however, these professors were chosen because of the unrelenting interest in and ser- vice to the students of this University. These men have aided students both in and out of class to a better under- standing and appreciation of learning. Perhaps the one final reason we of the Thoroughbred salute these men is be- cause they have, through example, patience, endurance, and ever through the offering of a challenge, produced in their students a love of learning— that state of mind which is necessary for development of an inquiring spirit. It is for these reasons that the 1963 Thoroughbred salutes these professors. Mr. Morton Walker English Department Speed Scientific School Dr. William F. Dr. Martin Stevens, who coached | mentioned the idea of sending a team to the television program. 58 The year 1963 will long remain a memo- rable one for the University of Louis- ville as this was the year the University was represented on the nationally tele- vised General Electric College Bowl. Beginning in January, preparations were made to choose four undergraduates to represent the University. About one hundred students expressed an interest in the first elimination which was com- posed of a written examination cover- ing every field of study. From the re- sults of this first test, forty-eight were selected to participate in the College Bowl trials, which were conducted exactly on the lines of the television program, under the direction of Dr. Martin Stevens, Professor of English. Weeks passed and finally the number was reduced to nine. These nine finalists were assigned intensive study materials in specific fields. They met in private sessions every Monday and Wednes- day and on Fridays they exhibited their knowledge in open competition for the entire University and the public. On April 7, eight of these finalists appeared on local television where they competed against each other in a mock College Bowl game. Following this game, the University of Louisville team was announced. It consisted of Frank Krull, the captain, a senior English major; Evelyn Feltner and Giles Kot- cher, also senior English ma jors; and Anne Groves, a freshman pre-medical student. On Easter Sunday these four Louis- ville Quiz Kids'' met Kenyon College, a team vying for its fifth straight win. The Louisville team beat Kenyon and went on to three more consecutive vic- tories over the University of Delaware, the University of Idaho, and lona Col- lege. On May I1, the University of Louisville team was defeated by a team from Yeshiva University. Although the Louisville team may have felt some disappointment at not returning with the silver bowl reserved for five-week winners, the University and the City of Louisville expressed nothing but pride in its team. Miller, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, died. Mr. Miller was appointed to the Board in 1940 and had worked for the University with dedication and imagi- nation for more than twenty years. Since 1955 he had been Chairman of the Board of Trustees, a position he filled with honor. But Lee Miller's worth to the University was not to be mea- sured in terms of the positions he held or the titles he accumulated. Day in and day out, he was an ardent advo cate of the University. Its athletic pro- gram was probably his first love, but again he made himself felt in all phases of the University's activities. He made available to us his enormous prestige, his good common sense, and his gift for Overcoming seemingly insurmountable Uifficulties. It goes without saying that we miss him deeply, but we are grate- tul for having had his devoted interest and service for more than twenty years. In Memoriam The President’s Message The thrilling experience our College Bowl team has given us is simply dramatic evidence of the quality of the education you have received at the University of Louisville. You are now graduating from this institution, and on Commence- ment Sunday | will shake your hand and deliver to you the diploma you have earned. This to me is the high point of your college and university career, and no matter how many times | repeat it, it never becomes a routine performance, for | believe deeply that this is one of the most significant events of your life. But what in reality does that little piece of paper mean? This degree that you have earned is an entree to the finest careers that society affords, the most en- riching professions, and the most cultivated way of life. | repeat: It is the en- tree to those things. It does not guarantee them. It opens the door, and whether you realize the opportunities that it affords depends upon the use to which you put the skills and mental aptitudes and knowledge that you have gained in your years here. This degree, by the mere fact that you have attained it, is evi- dence of certain significant personal attributes — a good mind, a sense of direc- tion, a quality of determination and stick-to-it-iveness. These are highly essential ingredients in a success story, but there is more to it than that. While it is not always true, it is to be profoundly hoped that, in addition, this degree is evi- dence of certain intangible personal and moral qualities which make for a richer life and a finer citizenship: an inquiring, curious mind, a determination to con- tinue to learn, a deep desire to use the talents with which you have been en- dowed for the benefit of others, and the ability to understand another person's point of view. This is what | think a diploma means, but in the final analysis you are the only one who can give it that meaning. | wish for each of you a bright and happy future. Its duties include selecting the President, adopting the University budget, and making final decisions in all important matters concerning the University.
