Memory and intellectualism are the key words for a col- legiate life . .. Memory of four A.M. homecoming decora- tions, the scramble before judging, University pep-rallies and bonfires, the elation or dejection of the big game. the Victory dance, and the presentation of awards ... Memory of initiation and installation ceremonies . . . Memory of fellow students clamoring for J.F.K. and Student Senate Seats . . . Elections won and lost . . . Throwing the newly pinned into the showers . . . Struggling to keep on key dur- ing Barbershop . . .Crying or shouting after the results from Fryberger are out. . . finally attaining commencement. All these and more furnish the reflections of the fun and social meaning of a collegiate career . . . but there is another meaningful side to the collegiate life . . . the all-night stands for finals . . . pulling an F in your first course and the dis- satisfaction one feels after not doing his utmost .. . the ectures cut and regretted . . . the concerts attended from jazz to blues, from rock-n-roll to classical . . . the plays absorbed by eager, inquiring minds . . . mid-night to dawn discussions on courses, profs, and sex . . . Panic during tests and sleeping through finals .. . When one attends the University of Louisville, these elements combine to form the basis for a germaine mind, philosophically and logically equipped to meet and defeat all challenges during one's life span.

DEAN DORIS N. STOKES The 1962 Thoroughbred staff takes great pleasure in dedicating this book to Dean Doris Nickel Stokes for her outstanding loyalty and devotion to the University of Louisville and its students. Mrs. Stokes was born in Brazil, Indiana, and shortly after her birth she moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, where she attended Garfield High School. She did undergraduate work at Indiana State College and earned a Master's Degree at Indiana University. After teaching commercial subjects in two Indiana high schools, Mrs. Stokes came to Louisville in Jan- - uary, 1947. She taught in the Secretarial Science De- partment of the University of Louisville until Spring of 1953. At this time, she became Assistant Dean of Women to Miss Hilda Threkeld, and in July, 1955, she was named acting Dean of Women. As Dean Doris Nickel she always liked to tell groups to whom she spoke that she would get in her ‘‘Nickel's worth.” This story changed, however, on August 6, 1960, as she became Mrs. Cecil Stokes. Mrs. Stokes has always upheld the office of Dean of Women with a great deal of dignity and has taken a personal interest in the students she counsels. In addition to the regular duties of Dean, she acts as Faculty Advisor for the Panhellenic Council, guiding the sorority women and helping coordinate their social functions. Mrs. Stokes is the Secretary of the Student Aid Committee, a member of the University Council, as well as Director of Housing for Women. The Ameri- can Association of University Women claims her attention as she performs her duties as Chairman of the Committee on Higher Education. Though her duties and responsibilities are many, Mrs. Stokes still finds time to talk personally with any student who needs her advice. She never hesitates to offer her assistance for any worthwhile University project. To an extraordinary woman who is an excellent rep- resentative of the University of Louisville, we dedicate the 1962 Thoroughbred.
