THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Students: The theme of this year's Thoroughbred is the role of the student in the University, and | have been asked to comment upon it. Obviously, the student in a very real sense is the reason for the University's existence, and provides so much that makes a University an interesting and enjoy able place. Students provide life and youth and enthusiasm and infinite variety. To those of us who are here year after year, there is no greater thrill than to see the new students grow in maturity and responsibility and in intellectual interests. More than that, some of the dearest friends | have, and this is true of every member of the faculty, are students whom | have come to know through the University. All of -us are important to each other, of course, but the fact of the matter is, all this concentration of faculty brains and talent and dedica- tion, all of this physical plant and all of these dollars, and all of this business and administrative experience and ability exist primarily for you, the student. Certainly in our Board of Trustees meeting, when | was outlining plans, and in the Administrative Council and in faculty meetings and discussion, the interests and needs of the students are uppermost. | remember at one Board of Trustees meeting, when | was outlining plans for new dog kennels at the Medical School, one of the members said, Doctor, when are you going to do. something for the students down there? We are proud of our students. Our alumni holds positions of trust and influence in every worthwhile endeavor and are found wherever you may go. You who are now here will soon take your place in that growing group, and we are confident that all the investment which you and others have made in your education will bear rich returns in your life and in the lives of those you touch. President Philip Davidson
