DEDICATIO To Dr. George Brodschi, a leader in international affairs, a guide to students, -and a promoter of peace in the world, we, the editors, dedicate this 1957 Thoroughbred, Dr. Brodschi, born in Rumania, graduated from the University of Bucharest with the degree of Doc- tor of Economics and Political Sciences. During World War II he joined the famous British Political Warfare Department, and later became a member of the British Colonial Service. In February, 1948, he came to Louisville and became an American citi- zen. He is best known for directing the exchange of students, some two hundred students have gone to Europe through his Summer Work Exchange Pro- gram, nineteen University students have been granted scholarships and grants to study abroad through his influence. Not only have University of Louisville students benefited from his program, but two hun- dred and fifty students from other lands have come to our halls of learning, and afterwards have returned to their native lands with a renewed desire for world peace and understanding. As Director of the International Center, Dr. Brodschi has co-ordinated local industries in this Summer Work Exchange Program-thus rendering his service not only to the University and its students, but to all Louisville as well. He is a man who speaks many languages, who un- derstands many peoples, and a man whose faith in God has found an active service to render unto all men. His honors and citations from many nations are without number, each has been justly earned. With gratitude and respect we, the students of the Uni- versity of Louisville, add this dedication to his many other honors. Dr. Brodschi, professor, diplomat, leader in Inter- national affairs, friend of the University and its stu- dents, Christian of great and active faith, Salutamus Te

Dear Graduates of 1957: Your long-expected day has now arrived, the consummation of many years of endeavor and effort. As I look back on my own life, I know how much it means to you, and I am sure you and those whom you love have sacrificed to make this possible, and I am sure also that it has been a happy time. As you look back on these days, you will realize that this was one of the happiest and most fruitful periods in your life. I-Iere it was that you have received an education which will stand you in good stead as long as you live. Here you have formed friendships which will be among the most enduring you have ever made. Here, too, for many of you, you have found your lifes companion. In the years that you have spent at this University, if it has done for you what we fervently hope and believe it has, it has firmed up the foundations of your lives, given you a new understanding of your fellow men, a new sense of social responsibility, and taught you the value of intel- lectual effort and how to use your minds. In the years to come, therefore, it devolves upon you, so richly laden, to pay back the debt you owe your alma mater, but what can you possibly give her back one-half so pre- cious as her gift to you? Something equally precious to her and to all who come behind you seeking learning and in- spiration, as you once sought them: freedom and support. Two things in particular will discharge your obligation. In the first place, promote this university wherever you may be, in whatever city or town, or wherever you go. See that it is adequately financed. join the alumni association, send your children here, speak up for the U. of L. wherever you are. Permeate this city with enthusiasm for it so that there shall come to it a tidal wave of support, and this in- stitution, long cherished in this city, shall grow steadily in the support and affection of its people. And, finally, defend and protect this institution with all your strength against any who would throttle or destroy its freedom, uphold its reputation for integrity and sound teaching, defend the right of the faculty to freedom of teaching and inquiry, and protect it from the harassment of irresponsible individuals and from unmerited criticism. Only in such an atmosphere can we expect this University to discharge its first responsibility-the education of men and women for God-fearing lives of usefulness and leader- ship in this city, state and nation. Thus throughout the length of days can you bring intelli- gence, human understanding, and faith to the ordering of your daily lives and in so doing, honor the University which nurtured you. Sincerely, X Philip Davidson President
