Dr. Joe F. Wilkes has spoken this year to 2,000 teachers in Kentucky as well as to two national education meetings-the Teacher Education and Professional Standards meeting in De- Kalb, Illinois, and the Teacher Education Division of the Southern Association in Miami Beach, Florida. Dr. Wilkes is the State President of the Kentucky Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development for 1955-1956. He attended their national meeting in New York and also partici- pated in the Southern States Work Conference at Daytona Beach. Dr. Wilkes is the Coordinator of the Pilot Study in the Prepara- tion of Elementary Teachers, which is sponsored on the Univer- sity ,of Louisville campus by the Ford Foundation Fund for the Advancement of Education. Dr. Walter L. Moore of the Mathematics Department is on leave of absence to observe new methods and materials for teach- ing freshman mathematics. He has visited the University of Chicago and the Case Institute in Ohio doing this. He received a grant from the Research Corporation of New York to construct a photoelectric photometer for the purpose of studying variable stars. While on leave from the University, Dr. Moore is constructing a clock drive and declination and right ascension circles for his 20-inch telescope which he completed recently. Dr. Edmond R. Schlesinger, the only full-time member of the DAE staff, this year taught nine hours in the German ,Depart- ment of A. 8a S. He teaches Humanities and German in DAE, and is also one of the instructors in the Neighborhood Colleges. Dr. Schlesinger was appointed Head of the Department of Audio- Visual Education by the president in 1953. His job is to coordi- nate all audio-visual materials used in the university. Last year he sponsored a film festival, which is planned again this year. For the past seven years Dr. Schlesinger has been the faculty advisor for the Pi Phis. Mrs. Meta Riley Emberger and Mrs. Marian Ross Hall look over their now published book, Scientific Wriling. Both coop- erated in the project, which will be used as a text in courses in scientific writing, report writing, and for the use of writers in business, industry, and science.

Z , 33,165 ., .,,. t , Dr. john Caldwell of the English Department is the director of the Little Theater and of the University Players. Dr. Caldwell is a native of Florida. He was graduated from Sewanee, where he was active in every aspect of drama, and also was editor of the Literary Quarterly, Heljkozz. He served in the Army Signal Corps, but afterwards he matriculated at Vanderbilt University where he received his'Ph.D. He has written several plays, among which are Florida Aflawze and the Bmzkr of Lozzdozz. As a director he has already established himself in Louisville by his Little Theatre Productions and by his ..., ..,, .nn-1 Creighton Gilbert has found a place to observe people and at the same time often work on the next day's class work. I-le spends one evening every week working as receptionist at Neighborhood House, a Community Chest agency. He served as guest professor also for the National Rural Electric Job Training and Safety Confer- ence held in Minnesota last fall. Dr. Crumpton is the director of the Kentucky chapter of the American Society of Training Edu- cators, a member of the Advisory Committee to the State Director of Vocational Education, and a member of the planning commit- tee for the Central Region Trade and Industrial Education Con- ference held in Minnesota.
