Dr. Walter Creese spent the sum- mer of 1954 in Europe as a member of the Columbia University Urban Studytour. Cities in England, Scot- land, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France were visited by the group. This visit is the basis of his article to appear in the journal of the In- ternational Federation for Tozrn Planning in the Hague, the Nether- lands, probably sometime this spring. DR. WALTER CREESE Mr. Creighton Gilbert spent the summer studying in Italy. He made his headquarters in Padua and traveled a lot, making a close examination of Renaissance paintings, primarily in Venice. He is now writing a book on problems of Venetian painting. MR. CREIGHTON GILBERT Last summer, Dr. John Heldman taught two classes daily in the Summer School session and was traveling Supervisor of Recreation for the jefferson County Recreation Board. He is the 1954-55 President of the Fall Cities Basketball Officials Association. This is his 30th year in tooting the whistle. l Q DR. JOHN HELDMAN Mrs. Meta Riley Emberger and Mrs. Marian Ross Hall look over galleys of and their book, Scientific Writing, which is being published by Harcourt, Brace and Company. The book is designed for text use in classes in scientific writing, re- ' port writing, and advanced exposition and for use as a reference for writers in science, business, and industr Y' MR. MAURICE LANEY During the summer of 1954, Dr. Koester and his wife visited the germanic speaking countries: Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Ger- many. He is now writing a book on the German speaking people in Kentucky. In addition he has recently written the articles: German Neufzrpaperr, Latin Farmerr, Bloody Monday, The Tzzrnerf Early Hiftory, Hinory of the Sorial Male Chorus, and Lola Montez. For the past two summers, Mr. Maurice Laney and his family have moved to Hoosier Courts at Indiana University, where he is completing a Ph.D. degree in Music. He has been concentrat- ing on getting his language requirements out of the way and with the help of a French tutoress, Mrs. Laird, is working his way through Le: DR. LEONARD KOESTER Symphonies ole Beethoven by Jean Chantavoine and hopes to pass both French and German requirements by the end of next summer. 25

HARVEY B. LOVELL During the spring semester 1953-54, Dr. Lovell was on sabbatical leave. His time was about equally divided between two projects, the .first of which was to complete the revision of a one semester textbook for a beginning zoology course. The second project was to continue to collect and photograph the honey plants of the United States, that is plants which are of value to beekeeping. As his co-author of the text teaches in central Florida, he was able to spend part of the spring there at the time when many species of trees, shrubs, and herbs were coming into bloom. I-Ie also observed birds in many areas and helped make a breeding bird study in Owen County, Kentucky. E. E. LYON Mr. E. E. Lyon taught at O.S.U., Columbus, Ohio, last summer. I-Ie ran a nightly vacation Bible School, ministered to his church, and taught one week at a Bible Camp. He is chairman of the Committee for promoting Original Band Composition of the College Band Directors National Association, Im- mediate past chairman of the Southern Division of C.B.D.N.A., and chairman, Louisville Region Kentucky Music Education Association. DAVID W. MAURER David W. Maurer, member of the University's English Department, has done extensive research in the field of language, with special reference to non- standard usage-including dialects, slang, and occupational speech. Last year he did research at the University of Mexico on the contraband in drug traffic. While in Mexico, he became interested in archeology, and is now getting a book ready with material he gathered there. Dr. Maurer is particularly interested in criminal argots and is now doing a major study on thieves. Last summer Dean Oppenheimer taught at the University of Minnesota where he had a seminar in higher education and was a consultant for the workshop on higher education which is conducted under the auspices of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In his spare time he did a little fishing for walleyed pike He has also served on several intervisitation committees of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. His last trip was to Ol io University. He is now supervising some studies con- cerning the kinds of students who come to the College, how many of them stay for four years and what they think of the College program. DORIS NICKEL Miss Doris Nickel is our Assistant Dean of Women. Her varied responsibili- ties include supervision of the offices of both the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women. She also manages the social calendar, attends conventions, and keeps records on the dormitories, sororities, and fraternities. She teaches an education class in Methods in Shorthand and Typing. As secretary of the Student Aid Committee, she assists in the handling of all scholarships. Last summer she took a pleasure trip to Michigan, and for a week or ten days relaxed on the beaches there.
