“To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield”... ; Class of June, 1946, could best be described by the scientist's term ‘metamorphic’. . . What it is today it was not two, three, or even four years ago. Yet, there are members of this class whose memories of Undergraduate days on Belknap Campus go farther back than this. In their concern with a college career there is a blank of about three years . . . . three years spent fighting a war. They have expressed their aware- ness of a change in the University more aptly than those who were able to remain and be a part of that change. Some shed tears in the early days of ’43, when twenty and thirty men a day left school to answer the ‘call’... And some were glad when that same summer the U. S. Naval V-12 Unit was officially activated. It was also that month a new president, Dr. Jacobsen, was welcomed on campus to fill the vacancy created by the untimely death of Dr. Raymond Kent. In general, campus activities continued through the years, with an occasional ‘shot in the arm’ by some energetic student when the ceiling was the lowest. . . Till now the situation has taken on the proportions of a boom. Students are expressing and working upon progressive measures of self-government and action. Faculty and administration officials, and the Board of Trustees with its two new members, Mr. Charles P. Farnsley, once an undergraduate among us, and Mr. Barry Bingham, distinguished newspaper-owner, are furthering plans to create material gain in the form of improved and new buildings on campus and to strengthen the educational program and staff of the University. The Class of 46 makes no proficy, as is customary. Instead, it offers a prayer that these things which are crying needs may be fulfilled and stand as tributes to the classmates we mourn... And a final prayer of thanksgiving to those who have the courage and fortitude to answer these needs.
