Pane Fifty Class Histury September, 1919—HJune, 1923 + HE class of 1923 began its career in the University of Louisville in September, 1920 with one hundred and ten members. In February - our roll increased to one hundred and eighteen, but by the end of the year reverted to the original number of one hundred and ten. With pardonable pride we viewed our activities in the college and strutted around the corridors with all of the biggittiness if not with the dignity ot the high and mighty seniors. Our officers for the freshman year were James Stites, now a medic, president; Lucile Dennis, vice-president; Mildred Schneiderhan, secretary-treasurer; and William G. Waddel, ser- geant-at-arms. In the sophomore year the class was led by Lawrence Poston, II. The other officers were: Mildred Schneiderhan, vice-president; Thomas tice, secretary; and Churchill Rodgers, treasurer. The junior year started with sixty-eight of the old members and several special students. The class election was held under Mr. Poston, president for the year before and Mary Elizabeth Theobald was made president with Finck Dorman, vice-president; Thomas Rice, secretary; Lawrence Poston, treasurer; and Bruce Vance, sergeant-at-arms. The senior year was conducted under the leadership of the following officers: Finck Dorman, president; Frances Winstandley, vice-president; Mary Elizabeth Theobald, secretary; Thomas Rice, treasurer; and Bruce Vance, sergeant-at-arms. J. Adams; Vice-President, C. R. Stambaugh; Secretary and Treasurer, Frank Jones; Historian, C. C. Cloud. We were represented by Cartee and Jones in basketball, by Atkins in baseball, and by Obrey in track. it’s a long lane, however, that has no turning, so eventually we found ourselves in that land of our dreams, the clinic. A scramble for patients, and in a few days every man was putting his theory into practice. How proud we were of these first patients and how pleased when they survived and sent us others! We found, too. that Dr. O’Rourke and the demonstrators were our friends, though we sometimes forgot it when John T. hooked out a gold foil or discovered the presence of Corego. Class officers for the junior year were as follows: President, Phil Roberts; Vice-President, L. A. Moorhatch; Secretary and Treasurer, Robert Creamer; Historian, P. J. Evans. .Cartee, Jones and Atkins were again our representatives cn the Varsity, Carter being captain of the basketball squad. September, 1922, found us back, full fledged seniors and feeling that at last we had “arrived.” Early in the year we elected the following officers: President, Robert Overstreet; v . . Vice-President, Guy Baker; Secretary and Treasurer, L. A. Moorhatch; Historian, Fred C. Breeding, Sergeant-at-Arms, Pat Cosgrove. Horace Cartee represented us in the Booster’s Club. And now, after the long and tedious grind of securing a professional education, the class of ’23 stands at the end of its journey, looking forward with hope and backward with pride. We are proud of the class of ’23 and we believe in it implicitly. We believe in our profession and in its future. We believe in the future. We believe in the University of Louisville and the things for which it stands. We esteem it an honor to hold diplomas from this institution, for we know from experience they are not lightly won. _ And now our college days are over; we say farewell to the old institution and wish it prosperous days. poly Classmates: Let us for a few Bage Eighty SIuninr Class G. Only those who are directly interested in journalism as a profession are requested to become members and several of those who answered to the roll call each week during the past year have written for nationally known magazines and newspapers as well as for local newspapers. This year we surrender six seniors to the Alumni Association of the Chemistry Club, which was organized in 1922 by Mildred Schneiderhan. We are sorry to see them leave us, but we feel that the bond of good fellowshp will only be strengthened between the active and the alumni organizations through the clever work of our seniors. We wish to congratulate The Kentucky Cardinal Staff for the excellent co-opera- tion it has shown toward the Chemistry Club, and for the interesting and attractive annual they have published. The honor members of the Chemistry Club taken from the freshman chemistry class of the past year, were Miss Esther L. Sullivan and Mr. Norris Boyd. The club has been entertained as well as instructed during the past year by many interesting discourses. Chief among these were discussions of Martin Sandstrom, Instructor in Organic and Physiological Chemistry at the University, Louis Baer, Instructor in Nurses’ Chemistry, Mr. John Bosworth of the Federal Chemistry Society, Professor Andrew Snyder, Mr. Bayles of the American Chemical Society, Acting Dean Anderson, and last but not least, Dr. A. W. Homberger. head of the department of Chemistry, and founder of the Chemistry Club at the University of Louisville. Besides these, the business meetings were made enjoyable by talks given by the members of the club. But the Chemistry Club is not all business! You can’t imagine what a splendid time we had on our five big parties this year. The first of these was the annual Thanksgiving Hike to Mocking Bird Valley. The second entailed a visit at the home of Mildred Schneiderhan during the Christmas holidays for a Tea, while the most popular of all parties was the annual dinner-dance at the Tyler Hotel at the beginning of spring! Next on our program was the all day picnic at South Park Fishing Club, and another enjoyable hike (with a full moon, too). The alumni. not to be outdone. by the courtesy of the Chemistry Club, entertained us with a Moonlight Boat Ride at the close of the year. : The club also made a number of trips to local plants during the year. A year’s work with the Chemistry Club counts for student activity credit. Students in any department of the University of Louisville who have had one college year of General Chemistry, and who have had or are taking another course in chemistry, are eligible = ee ks graduate from the university as members of the Chemistry Club, are also eligible for membership in the Alumni Association. The membership is open to all students in all colleges of the University. The club was organized for the purpose of encouraging a healthy interest in the best drama, and of giving opportunity for the development of the dramatic talent in the University. Work in the Dramatic Club may now count for credit towards the bachelor’s degree. This work is organized on the basis of a labora- tory course in dramatics, with required supplementary reading. Nearly every Saturday afternoon throughout the fall and spring semester a short play is presented in the “Dramatic Workshop” of the University. These preliminary plays insure for each member of the club an opportunity to engage in some form of dramatic work. Longer and more difficult plays are presented during the year, afford- ing students of exceptional ability an opportunity to do work of a more professional nature. Only students of regular standing are permitted to represent the University in these plays. During the season of 1922-23 the longer plays presented in the Work Shop were “Mama’s Affairs,” a Harvard Prize Play, which was given for three performances; “Little Women,” which packed three houses; “She Stoops te Conquer,” which was considered a very creditable revival of this old classic; “The Pillars of Society,” which was. given for eight highly successful performances; and “Only Thirty-eight,” which was presented in the Work Shop for six performances and at Lakeland, Kentucky, for one performance. Several afternoons during the semester are devoted to laboratory practice. On these occasions the plays are staged entirely by the students without the aid of the instructor. Rehearsals for the plays are held in the evenings so as not to interfere with class work. The student performances this season included the presentation of many well-known one-act plays. One of the unique features about the University productions is the scenery. All of the settings are built and painted in the Work Shop and are under the supervision of a scenic artist and the director, Mr. Martin. The Work Shop has turned out some marvelous settings as well as productions patrons of the Little Theater. that have won the commendation of the Moonlight, sunshine, and terrific wind storms offer no obstacles to the producer as they are vividly and realistically staged with the aid of the Players’ ultra modern lighting arrangement. It has been conceded that the Uni- versity of Louisville Players have the best equipped stage in the South and man y of the National producers who come to Louisville pay their first visit to the Work Shop and marvel at its great forward stride in the development of the Little Theater. Pane One Gundred and Forty-two 1 Che Kentucky Cardinal (Zea Ses S = FP —=F; 235 It is with great pride that the Players announce that their director for the next season will be Mr. Boyd Martin. Too little praise cannot be afforded this great man who has labored so hard and consistently to make this organization an asset to the University. Mr. Martin was formerly a student of the University of Louisville and is a playwright of exceptional ability. His two chief plays which were awarded great | praise from the theater going public are The Ugly Duckling and Temper and Tempe ment. ra- The University of Louisville Players are rehearsing now for their bill of one-act plays which will be presented at the Kentucky State Fair, September 10 to 15. Six one-act plays will be given and all are the work of well-established authors. The plays will be given in a regular dramatic tent which has been especially equipped for the demonstration. The six plays include The Neighbors, ’Op O’ Me Thumb, The Dear Departed, The Teeth of the Gift Horse, The Bracelet, and Woman Proposes. Mr. Ball has since joined Alpha Kappa Kappa. ; e While it is not obligatory upon each group to re-elect a junior member to. senior = membership, it has been established as a precedent that such action be taken, if the representative has been satisfactory to his group, so that he may be more familiar with the work of the previous year and exercise his judgment most effectively in the senior year as the result of such experience. ; ; The purpose and function of the Upper Class Medical Student Council have been confused in the minds of some with the Student Governing Board and the Medical nN Inter-fraternity Council. The Upper Class Medical Student Council is not interested directly and does not purpose to exercise any jurisdiction over the fraternity affairs, 4 such as rushing or dates of initiation, or over social affairs, such as student or i} T fraternity dances. The preamble adopted at one of the first meetings is as follows: 1) oe “The object of this Council shall be to promote better school spirit among a i members of the faculty and the under-graduate students, to bring these two ii an bodies into closer and more harmonious relation, to consider such matters as | A pertain to the general welfare of the student body in particular and the i medical school in general, to serve as a clearing house for exchange of views A between the faculty and the students in regard to such matters, to confer with the Faculty Committee on Student Affairs on all matters which may improve the School or promote the welfare of the student body, and to represent the sentiment of the student body in its relation to the student bodies of other colleges of the University of Louisville.” i The by-laws provide that meetings shall be held regularly on the first Saturday H night of October, November, December, January, February, March, April, and May. | Every other meeting is a dinnet meeting at which the members of the Faculty i Committe on Student Affairs are expected to be present and which the faculty men have usually attended. This has served to bring a group of upper class students and faculty men together in a purely informal social relation. Such dinners have been followed by informal meetings at which various matters have been discussed quite frankly with the purpose in mind of promoting the interests of the college at large. Mr. Springstun, the senior non-fraternity representative, was unanimously elected secretary for the year and the chairmanship has rotated through the different repre- sentatives. FIRST NATIONAL BANK Member Federal Reserve System Fifth Street and Court Place Geard hy the Cardinal Staif When is the Cardinal coming out? No, I haven’t got mine ready. Will next week do? What’s the latest date for this? When -is the Cardinal coming out anyway? How much space will athletics have? Why don’t you give them more? I hope you won’t charge us much. I can’t pay my fees to-day. Why don’t you have a bigger book? What kind of a cover will the Cardinal have? I’m tired of red. It rubs off. Why don’t you have a cardinal cover on the Cardinal? Where is the feature section? Are there any beauty pages in it? What’s the idea in running these kodak pictures? No, I didn’t turn any in, but I don’t see what you want to run these for. Why are some of the names misspelled? Why do I have to type this write-up? When is the Cardinal coming out? Why can’t we have our pictures taken when we want to? Why doesn’t the Art Editor mount the pictures? Why are these pictures crooked? Why don’t you have something new? When is the Cardinal coming out? I haven’t written that stuff yet. Will next Wednesday do? I don’t see why you don’t get the Cardinal out on time. What do the quotations mean? Why does everybody look so ugly? Why don’t you have a good photographer? Good Night! Do you have to pay the photographer that much? Why don’t you get a cheap photographer? These pictures are awful. I don’t see why the editors used them. Why does this say —— ? Yes, I know I wrote that but you know what I meant. Why didn’t you correct it? What do you mean, changing my write-up?!? Why are the pictures different sizes? Why do we have to take our proofs back? Now that is NOT the pose I wanted. Why can’t they get things straight? I showed Miss Offut the one I wanted when I got the proofs. No, I haven’t time to get ads. -Going to the dance tonight? When is the Cardinal coming out? I just haven’t found a minute in which to write that stuff. Will tomorrow do? Did you see the Mary Anderson yesterday? OH, my dear! Why don’t the editors have time to go out? : Why are editors always so cross? I guess they think its temperamental. Now, if they would only work a little, the Cardinal might come out on time.
