WANT? 1 f I NV gm 2 ,, 6, :fx ,.6,SIf.. ,WNL Q H5 We, the Class of 1983, Dedicate This Yearbook to Chris Butler F f v-,Wff - ,wif- it There were three main reasons why we chose to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Butler. First of all, he is a great teacher. His way of describing rather than lecturing got the whole class involved in the subject matter. He taught us games: we were Mesopotamian kings as subs and feudal lords when freshmen. Secondly, he really helped us through our years at Uni. He was our class sponsor for several years and took us on exciting and enlightening field trips. He also was - and is - a terrific chess club sponsor. The last reason is that he is a wonderful guy and a dedicated teacher. Whether visiting the gift shop in a Chicago museum or discussing the geopolitics of Medieval Europe, time spent with Mr. Butler is neither a bore nor a waste. Thank you Mr. Butler, for all you've been and done. 5 Fl'i9I'lClS I Wl'I9nGVGI' l Am ' Feeling an They Help Me Get Through QQ. the Rainy 5AY..I5N'T'IHAT 'Ii-IE NEW GIRL FROM LA? WEL!! Stephie Wengert did terrific planning and Bill Walker began his career as a disc jockey. Everyone had a blast dressing up. Some of the great costumes that night included a cow, an Indian, a flapper, and a bro. The Halloween Dance was one of the best dances this year, and everyone had a lot of fun. ll? I J ' N if Q CHRISTMAS PARTY The Annual Surprise Christmas Party was surprisingly fun this year! The Madrigals carolled the classes through tyhr halls and to the gym, where the party began. The Seniors gave their teachers Christmas presents, which in- cluded a whip for Mrs. Wheeler, a big kiss for our new Consumer Law pro- fessor, and a party for out most en- thusiastic teacher, Pat. Dr. Purves read a different Christmas story! The teachers, skits were as cute as ever, and Mr. Butler played a convincing San- ta. The English department played rebellious rock 'N' rollers, and Mr. Royer and Mr. McColIom wound up with pies in their faces. HO HO HO. Madrigals perform at the gym 20 CHRISTMAS DANCE 1 2 is J .A , ' 5 4 . l X rt , f 5 , .,,.' K ,ff ' ,jg 2, mfr The Christmas Dance was held in the lllini Union. The Band Breezin' played. A great crowd showed up, with a good mix from all classes. During the dance, the band members got tired of singing and let Aleya Rahman and Shagg Makino take over. They were too shy, so Joel Crames and Rachel Peters serenaded each other. A good time was had by all. 21 Pep Rally The cheerleaders raised school spirit throughout the year with pep rallies. Any unspirited cheerleader was im- mediately sent to the infamous SPIRIT BOX. Any unspirited fan was shot at sunrise. Students were encouraged to wget rowdy, and cheer on all of our teams. GET FlOWDY! ff' 22 nv' X ' l 'S I I I Shagg and Joe Sparkle 'n Shine -AV' fi Homecoming was celebrated this year for the first time in about twenty years. To honor the occasion, the cheerleaders held a pep rally and a dance. The theme was Get Rowdy, and most students did Mike McCollom got Bill Wells from WLRW to DJ the dance and the crowd was treated to a special tape of the Vertebrats. Zz---. 1 I. This year's cross-country team surprised many people, including themselves. Early in the season, Coach Mike McCollom was quoted as saying that this year's team was average, not knowing that the selfsame team was to finish third at dis ric and a s rong eight at sec ionals - the stronges f n s by a University High Cross-Country team in over a decade. At sectionals, Shagg Makino finished 23rd, Thomas Leslie 44th, Chris DeCardy 52nd, David Johnson 71st, Mike Blossom 72nd, and Herbert Schonken 73rd. They Jr Boys' team was lead by the fivesome of Makino, Schonken, DeCardy, Leslie, and Derek hen. Our inspira ion and dedication was derived from the hard work of Joe Duke Kim and Larry Faint Thompson, Junior Greg Laughlin will be next year's Team Captain. The Girls' team made major strides forward from last year - they existed. However, not only did they exist, t ey manag- ed to perform very well throughout the season, finishing 3rd at Paxton and an awesome 2nd at Bismark-Henning, The Girls' team was ed by Freshman Sophia eely, always in the op ten, ol owe by Seniors Angie Johnson, Julie McMillan, and Valli Plog, and Freshmen Melinda Chen and Sarena Heumann, All in all, the 1982 Cross-Country J season was a very successful one for the twenty boys and six girls on the team. Special ' thanks goes to Assistant Coach Carrie Race. Chris, Shagg, and Herbert move through the pack at their District Meet. The core of the Varsity team consisted of seniors Chris DeCardy, Shagg Makino, Dan Teitelbaum, and Alan Yang, juniors Mike Blossom and Matt Kolodziejg and sophomore Larry Thompson. Because of the lack of varsity experience, the squad worked hard to learn its roles and as a result, surprised many teams wit heir good, consistent play. Behind captain Chris DeCardy, the team made a good showing at each of its home basketball games. With two close games against Kickapoo Conference rivals Wapella and Tri- Valley, the team received much-needed support and recognition from the public. All in all, the squad really came together and put together a very good season. ml 06-Q Ki I2 ,Eat 2 at Q-.... The 1982-83 subfreshman basketball team was marked with the distinction of being the only co-ed team in the sixth and seventh grade Urbana Park District League. While other teams periodically viewed this as a difficulty, the thirteen Uni basketball players had no problem establishing a positive team spirit, each player consistently gave hislher all. Unfortunately, injuries prevented Ed Giles and Libby Miericke from finishing out the season. Beginning the year with primarily inexperienced members, Coach Greg Walters proudly noted that the group became a team demonstrating talent. However, they got it together and came up with a squad of twelve. The cheerleaders were responsible for encouraging fans to come to all the athletic events. They kept school spirit up all year long at cross- country meets, track meets, and basketball games. A few of them even managed to get spirited during the national anthem. Jay Cline sponsored the cheerleaders, and Monica Rondon was the captain. They all had a lot of fun organizing Uni's very first Homecoming to raise money for athletics. fi! xg, -,. . mln: , , K Y ' , i E W NJ if 1 CHEERLEADERS -fa ,,V i S-2' I iiii tj Y 72 Nfl 0,95 2.
