He has become acquainted with every academic department, many student living groups, student honor groups, and he runs an open- door policy for students. His major difficulties were brought on by budget cuts. Money must be saved from somewhere, and deciding just where those cuts should be made have strengthened him, giving him a better hold on his job. 59 Vice Presidents Fulfill Expectations ACADEMIC VICE PRESIDENT Robert R. Ferguson Two vice presidents were newly appointed for this year. Academic Vice President, Robert Ferguson, formerly Dean of the College of Engineering, has addded enthusiasm and imagination to his position. The Financial Vice President, David L. McKinney, was currently associate commissioner of finance for the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. He is considered one of the best people in higher education finance. The search for the third vice president halted because of uncertainty of budget funds. Harry Davey handled the job until February 1, when he stepped down to fulfill other duties at financial aids, and at that time, Terry Arrmstrong, executive assistant to President Gibb, was named “acting coordinator” for all student and administrative services. The college is part of the land grant system. Besides providing instruction in agriculture it is also involved in an agricultural experiment station, which conducts research in all crop-producing and major livestock areas. The almost certain need for increases in food production make experiments within this college more and more important. After nearly 32 years of services within the College of Agriculture Dr, A.C. Wiese will retire. In recent years he has been teaching and doing research in the Department of Bacteriology and Biochemistry. 62 College __ | { Sy eee ie wid S CA 7 Po WL AWS Ne Agricultur COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE DEAN : Auttis M. Mullins 7 jas For students that are undecided about which college to enter, the University of Idaho offers a General Studies program. General Studies offers students a chance to explore various academic areas by making up a schedule to their liking. During the freshman year and most of the sophomore year it is advised to follow the required curricula leading to a baccalaureate degree of one of the colleges. Students may stay in the advisory phase of General Studies for five semesters, after which they must move into a college, or declare General Studies as their major. The B.GS. degree program is in nonspecialized education. A minimum of 48 credits must be earned in courses numbered 300 and above. All credits and grade points earned by a student enrolled in this program hold their value for any degree. The U of I Engineering Program is among the finest in the country offering degrees in Computer Science, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Forrest Hall, professor of civil engineering, retired in November. He served for 31 years and was praised as being an enthusiastic and inspirational teacher. The College of Forestry, having received accredited status by the Society of American Foresters, offers excellent opportunities for its students entering careers in resource science and management. The program provides a natural study area of 7,200 acres of forest land located 25 miles from campus. This tract has a 200 mile recreation area and adjoins a 33-acre privately-owned nature preserve. The College also provides its students with a nursery, an on- campus Arboretum, a summer camp at Payette Lake and a wilderness field research station located in the Idaho Primitive Area. This year a new major emphasis is put on continuing education. Updating and retraining of professionals is necessary to keep up with rapid changes in the field of forestry. : Sa Ray Spry hy alles Ft ih Kae ee College of Forestry, pS COLLEGE OF FORESTRY, WILDLIFE AND RANGE SCIENCES Dean John H.
