The 1973 season began badly, as the injury-decimated Idahoans fell to Montana and Whitman. Undaunted, the team put together a remarkable comeback that included a record-breaking 20-1 demolishing of Columbia Basin. The final record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie has apparently given Idaho the league championship. But to receive the trophy Idaho must wait until Montana can finish some postponed games in the spring. The soccer team is given little funding. since soccer is not a varsity sport, and the players come from many nations, some hostile to one another. Despite these drawbacks the players have displayed admirable spirit and unity this season. They deserve the pride and support of all Idaho students. 39 ye E: ات ہہ کا کا ہت jenn ki AS | Jerry Williams strives for more yardage against Treasure Valley. e UMTS. u But - ری A = ERN. Hartung defines his job as partiy an interface between the State Board of Regents and a representative of the faculty. “To be the official representative of the university is always the main job of the president,” described Hartung. However, some university presidents also like to maintain a direct connection with the faculty. The dilemma lies in the completion of both of these jobs by one man. This two-fold problem faced Hartung when he became president in 1965. Which side of the dilemma to be most emphasized is entirely left to the discretion of the college president. Whether a president decides to travel to communicate with the Board of Regents and various national organizations or whether to maintain a direct communication with the faculty, the associated student services and the alumni association is of major importance to the universi ty. Mr. Outside, as Hartung calls the man who communicates with the Regents and outside organizations, must fully represent the university. Mr. Inside, concentrates on the faculty, academic, financial and student-orientated affairs, including those of the alumni. “This in itself, is also a full time job. commented Hartung. 1 solved this dilemma by deciding to assume the role of Mr. Outside. But, then a competant program must be organized by the president that assumes that particular role, explained Hartung. The program instituted by Hartung is a system similiar to that of many universities. Vice-Presidential offices then, have been formed at the U of | to make up for lack of direct control by the president. My office is divided into three main areas. The specialized vice-presidents work with Student and Administrative Services, Academics and Finance.” Dr. Sherman Carter heads the Financial area; Dr. Thomas Richardson heads the Student and Administrative Services and Dr. Robert Coonrod heads the Faculty and Academic area. Most larger universities have gone to this sort of system in recent years because of the convenience. A president might; however, decide to take the role of Mr. Inside and thus put himself in charge of say, Faculty Affairs. He then might appoint a vice-president to take the place of Mr. Outside.” | sometimes alternate with Dr. Coonrod and he then becomes the representative at the Regents' and other meetings. Dr. Hartung considers a main responsibility of the president to keep the University of Idaho a place where people can have the opportunity to go to school. If this means that he has to travel to arrange a funding projects through the Alumni Association, to talk to Regents and legislatures, or to attend vital meetings, then Hartung considers it worthwhile to leave the campus to do so. Although his job means alot of traveling, the President sees his work as facinating but also satisfying. No two days are alike in my job, Hartung summarized. 85 86 V.D. Richardson Qualified for Office Dr, Thomas Richardson is a man with many experiences in working with college youth. Besides completing several years of education, he has held such jobs as: an undergraduate head resident, residence assistant, and assistant head counselor. He has also been an assistant residence hall director, an admissions counselor, a resident hall director, and finally the associate Vice- President of Student Affairs. For a man in his early thirties, having accomplished all these connections with student affairs plus getting a PHD, his qualifications for a job such as Vice- President of Student and Administrative Services at the U of |, are experience. Obviously, since the role of a College President takes a lot of time, especially out of town, | must keep in operation all the various campus activities while Dr. Hartung is gone. However. that is not my main job. Actually, | take over the duties that were once assigned to the traditional Dean of Students. These would be Student Advisory Services, Financial Aids, Associated Student Body Activities. and the like. | also handle many of the Institutional Activities such as mailing procedures. Intercollegiate Athletics, and the Campus Security force. A student may go to the Student Counseling Center if he has a problem but he may also come directly to me with a problem if he so wishes, commented Richardson. ۸۵ student who has a problem with an instructor. a class or a cause to make him feel that the University has treated him unfairly may see me at anytime. Enrollment is only limited to those who apply for the class. The headquarters for CDC is located in the old Art and Architecture building. A student signs up for a directed study course and is put together with students to form projects. Community planning agencies of each city or county suggest an improvement plan to the Community Development Center Advisory Board. The Board which consists of faculty members from 12 disciplines, chooses the nine projects the class are to study. An example of a project, which is community-minded, is the work being done by students in the class on Rock Creek in Twin Falls, Idaho. Wells is the administrative officer and professor of the class. He feels that the program is getting off the ground, hopes more students will be interested in future programs. 87 The Parents' Weekend Honors Assembly (Mayfete) was held on April 20. This remodeling has been in the working since last December (1973) when new doors and windows were added to the main entrance of the cafeteria, but two years of planning has been tedious.” said Dean Vettrus, General Manager of the SUB. It takes a lot of time to plan an area to be remodeled, to find sufficient funds to cover costs, to present the material for approval to SUB-Board and other deciding authorities, and to receive bids from the various companies. However, these processes have been completed, and the construction of a practically new cafeteria will be done hopefully before this book reaches your hands in the fall of 1974. According to a SUB-Board report of March, 1974, completed by Vettrus, the SUB Dipper will be carpeted and walls repaired. A completely new idea, a Country Store, with candies, cigarettes and magazines will be located down the hall from the cafeteria by the phones. The biggest change will be the cafeteria and snack bar instead of high school-type gymnasium floors, it will contain plush carpeting with a blend of blues and greens. The area near the windows on the east side will have a raised floor with carpeting in reds and browns Instead of booths, one will be able to slide partitioned platforms and backrests, created either to accommodate two or a group of five or six people. Wood paneling will give a rustic atmosphere to this area The snack bar will have new kitchen equipment and a four faced clock has been ordered so that one will be able to view it from all directions With all the effort given to the project from Vettrus and others, it is hoped that the SUB will now have à warmer atmosphere, more conducive to student tastes. In the future, it is again hoped that more U of | students will make use of their Student Union Building ACCOROING to Vettnus. 91 Winter's rush puts us down into a race for grades and more hours than we'd care to spend on books. 93 Early snows of college coat and turn our vision inward, herding thoughts and students forth. Sketching building white and black lends more color to holiday gifts blending in kaleidoscopes of memory, so exile ends in pilgrimage. 95 96 January blows our breath away like time makes fog of all our thoughts and all our treks through rain and snow and shifting winds become hard duty in the slush of winter. Yet company in a month of Mondays bring elusive smiles to mind in Friday bars with Old Goldies. The years project slow change upon the cyclic seasons and it begins to be a chore to separate one from all the rest. Sometimes the most trivial matters took up entire meetings, while stuff that mattered had to occupy a ringside seat. But there is more to the ASUI than the weekly circus in the Chiefs Room at the SUB. The Senate is responsible for budgeting numerous ASUI programs and committees. Once out of the Senate's hands the money supports some valuable services for students. from legal advice to outdoor recreation. Many of these taken-for-granted programs do not exist on other campuses. So maybe the Senatorial hassle is worth it. Or is it? Jeff Stoddard. Senate Pres. The war and the draft are gone, and the military is trying to update and liberalize its programs. In fact. ROTC is now officially the Officer Education Program (OEP) Special programs and activities help ROTC students explore the military world.
