College life is such a number of things... there was the fellow with the I sweater and crew haircut who sat by you in Economics 51... the student with thick glasses whose notes pulled you through that history class... and the girl g whose friendly “ hello” three times a week brightened that philosophy class. . Cheering you heard last fall when Idaho valiantly tried and sometimes failed ... long rows of dripping “I? caps in Neale stadium ... cheer leaders and fighting teams... party politics and Bucket brigades. Such a number of things and such a number of people doing them that it’s impossible to select any one individual for a dedication. There are so many to praise... a hundred College Joes who traded sport coats and slacks for olive drab... the dozens of co-eds who thought a first-aid class more important than a coke date... that we can’t find any one student or faculty member deserving of the whole spotlight. So to all those who attended Idaho this year, and in doing so added to her tradition and to the flavor of her atmosphere, this 1942 GEM is dedicated,

word This year Idaho students saw their University go into a high-speed program of wartime education ... watched great changes made in the school they had known in peacetime. But while men have teetered on the edge of the Selective Service Act and while women have worried about the men or the lack of them, the general pattern of college life has somehow gone on quite the same as ever. Music hall pianos still bang out across the campus as before, the warm spring sun still puts Idaho men to sleep in their classes, and the stink is always with Science Hall. Somehow, vines are still clawing their way across the auditorium wall and the Ad clock is pointing off the hurrying hours of another term. There are many things about Idaho that never change . . . basic things that hang on and stamp her with tradition, It has been the aim of the 1942 GEM to show this in fitting one more year into the haze of a half-century, Ef it has succeeded, then you may take this GEM off the shelf ten years from now, lift the cover, and feel that you are back at Idaho.

”
