SPORTS BASEBALL TEAM In the 1959 baseball season the pitching quality presented itself as a pleasant surprise. Despite the improved pitching staff, the Hawks' loss in hitting power gave them a 5-11 record for the season. Catcher Bill Poutre won the Most Valuable Player Award taking second place in the hitting department with a .317 average, having the most runs batted in and the most hits. Bob Marianella paced the Hawks with a .383 average while Ray Ransom scored the most runs. Charlie Sidway with .242 and Ray Ransom with a .241 ranked third and fourth respectively. Ed Kaftanowicz with .235 rated fifth and Tom Greco with .218 sixth. The team had .902 field average and 3.81 earned run average. Rhode Island University, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute were among the new teams added to the varsity slate. The freshman schedule saw the addition of Trinity College, Yale University, the United States Coast Guard Academy, and Wesleyan Univer- sity. They both did admirably well considering the stiff opposition. The varsity team ended the season with a 7-13 record. Captain Tony Newman, averaging 8.7 per game, lead the Hawks as top rebounder. Bill Poutre broke two records, shooting 54.1fM: from the field and 82.8'X: from the foul line. In the foul shooting race Gene Rogers was second with a record of 81.1 Wa. Ron Lesieur topped the previous record, set by Frank Deutsch, scor- ing 34 points in a single game. 1959-1960 BASKETBALL SCORES HARTFORD u. ...,,. 40 RHODE ISLAND u ..., ..,i.,,.... 8 5 HARTFORD u. ..,... 87 CURRY COLLEGE ..i,,.,r....i,,... 59 HARTFORD u. ,.,... 55 OUINNIPIAC COLLEGE ....i.,. 70 HARTFORD u. ....,, 64 SOUTHERN CONN. ..,...i......, 78 HARTFORDU ...,... 74 LOwELL TECH ....i.....,...., ,.,., 4 I HARTFORD u. ,.,.i. 50 SUFFOLK u .r.,...,.i.....i..........i 39 HARTFORD u. ..i., 45 NORTHEASTERN u. ..,..i..,..... 68 HARTFORDU .,.... .59 ASSUMPTION COLLEGE .,..., 74 HARTFORD u ..i,.,. 57 CLARK UNIVERSITY ,.i.......,..i 77 HARTFORD u ...,.,. 83 BRIDGEPORT u. ...I................ 89 HARTFORD u. ...... 55 FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON ....., 72 HARTFORD u .,.I.., 71 C. w.
