The all-university annual tennis tournament is held each fall as part of the intramural program. TENNIS TEAM Under the mentorship of Coach Gene Sweeney the 1959 tennis team compiled the best record since the inception of the sport as part of the University varsity athletic program. Merrimack College, Providence College, and Rhode Island University were new additions to the schedule which at the season's end had recorded a 9-1 mark. The year was noteworthy for the tennis squad also in having gained membership in the New England Intercollegiate Lawn Tennis Association and in having participated in the annual tourney. Although no team members gained entry into the finals, the racquet squad won respect and prestige for their efforts. Second row, Ray Larabee. SWIMMING TEAM Captained by Wayne Bauer the first University varsity swimming team had a rough initial season. For their first schedule they had a program of five meets which were held away rather than at home due to the lack of a spectator-type pool at Hartford. St. .loseph's pool on Farmington Avenue in Hartford served as the practice pool for the Hartford Ducks who were coached by Edmund Cosker, Director of the COLLEGE . pool. In their first meets the team swam against colleges with teams well established for years. The win and loss record of their first season doesn't reflect the valuable experience gained by the swimmers for li X future years. There is very little doubt that the future holds areat pos- il sibilities for this new sport.
