Mr. Lee has served the needs of the University of Hartford and of Hillyer College by devoting twenty years to membership and later chairmanship of the Hillyer Board. His efforts in the formation of our present University are most deserving of our recognition. His leadership in effecting the integration of three formerly separate colleges has been singularly outstanding. We gratefully acknowl- edge not only his many achievements of the past but his foresight in further- ing and ensuring higher educational opportunities for the future. 3 L ADMINISTRATIVE CCUNCIL ALAN S. CHEERLEADERS B-E-A-T, beat the other team was the cry of Hartford Univer- sity's cheerleading ten this year as they brought school spirit and color to the basketball court. A fashionable group, the girls, co- captained by Peggy Easton and Tina Matsikas, added a new touch to their uniforms for the season with scarlet weskits over matching skirts. They have included many new and enthusiastic cheers in their repertoire. For the first time the squad traveled to all of the away games with the team and did much to spur the Hawks on to victory. Ever loyal, they could be counted on to keep up the team's spirit during the most trying moments of a game. WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Each year the organization of Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges selects the most outstanding men and women on college campuses for recognition. Of the fourteen University of Hartford seniors chosen for membership in this national honor society for 1960 one is a fourth-year student at Hartford Art School, three attend Hartt College of Music, and ten are from Hillyer College. The graduates were elected on the basis of their character, personality, participation in college activities, leadership, and scholastic achievement. Through their present accomplish- ments these men and women have shown promise of future success. 93 SPORTS BASEBALL TEAM In the 1959 baseball season the pitching quality presented itself as a pleasant surprise. Despite the improved pitching staff, the Hawks' loss in hitting power gave them a 5-11 record for the season. Catcher Bill Poutre won the Most Valuable Player Award taking second place in the hitting department with a .317 average, having the most runs batted in and the most hits. Bob Marianella paced the Hawks with a .383 average while Ray Ransom scored the most runs. Charlie Sidway with .242 and Ray Ransom with a .241 ranked third and fourth respectively. Ed Kaftanowicz with .235 rated fifth and Tom Greco with .218 sixth. The team had .902 field average and 3.81 earned run average. Rhode Island University, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute were among the new teams added to the varsity slate. The freshman schedule saw the addition of Trinity College, Yale University, the United States Coast Guard Academy, and Wesleyan Univer- sity. They both did admirably well considering the stiff opposition. The varsity team ended the season with a 7-13 record. Captain Tony Newman, averaging 8.7 per game, lead the Hawks as top rebounder. Bill Poutre broke two records, shooting 54.1fM: from the field and 82.8'X: from the foul line. In the foul shooting race Gene Rogers was second with a record of 81.1 Wa. Ron Lesieur topped the previous record, set by Frank Deutsch, scor- ing 34 points in a single game. 1959-1960 BASKETBALL SCORES HARTFORD u. ...,,. 40 RHODE ISLAND u ..., ..,i.,,.... 8 5 HARTFORD u. ..,... 87 CURRY COLLEGE ..i,,.,r....i,,... 59 HARTFORD u. ,.,... 55 OUINNIPIAC COLLEGE ....i.,. 70 HARTFORD u. ....,, 64 SOUTHERN CONN. ..,...i......, 78 HARTFORDU ...,... 74 LOwELL TECH ....i.....,...., ,.,., 4 I HARTFORD u. ,.,.i. 50 SUFFOLK u .r.,...,.i.....i..........i 39 HARTFORD u. ..i., 45 NORTHEASTERN u. ..,..i..,..... 68 HARTFORDU .,.... .59 ASSUMPTION COLLEGE .,..., 74 HARTFORD u ..i,.,. 57 CLARK UNIVERSITY ,.i.......,..i 77 HARTFORD u ...,.,. 83 BRIDGEPORT u. ...I................ 89 HARTFORD u. ...... 55 FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON ....., 72 HARTFORD u .,.I.., 71 C. w. Beginning with a group of both experienced and inex- perienced runners the first season of this new sport saw the Hawk Harriers end with a 'I-l record. Baseball Coach Frank Klein and Basket- ball Coach Roy Spear combined efforts to arouse and maintain interest in the new sport. With the addition of cross country students now have a choice of two varsity sports for participation during the fall sea- son. With this year's experience to rely Upenf this team's future ,appears very bright.
