Cunningham Outstanding Educators Pioneers Seniors Time, my friends, time for learning, time for loving and time for learning to love and time for loving to learn. Time, more time. Time for loving and learning. Time is what we need. Here in this place of learning we need more time for loving. Time to walk the agora with Socrates. Time to stroll among the trees with Thoreau. Time to learn and love. We need more time to get to know- ourselves and we need time to be more than teacher and student. Time to become friends. We need time for love to grow. Time is all we share. Let our time together be. not an over-night affair, but a long lingering love that we will share as a fond memory in years to come. Time to love to learn. Perhaps some learning can be divided up in segments in intensive seminars, but love has nothing to do with such petty measurements. No clock limits love. After twenty five years of loving and learning it seems to me my philosophy of education is this. “Learn to love and love to learn . Time is what we need. Time to learn and love. Time is all we share. Time to love to learn. No clock limits love. -Paul Hunsinger 206 PAUL HUNSINGER 207 Women in academia, in the 1970’s, are finding themselves a vital force in the most recent aspect of the vital and powerful civil rights struggle which dominates social change in America. For many, students and faculty alike, this new role of advocate in the search for equality and justice for more than half of the population is an unwelcome and disturbing phenomena. Women and men alike have taken comfort in the myths and stereotypes of history which simplified and defined relationships and roles—albeit in a highly stratified and inequitable manner. Many persons, in both sex categories, face with dread and trepidation and dislocations which must necessarily result when the social structure bends in the face of historical forces. These forces set in motion by the suffragettes of the early twentieth century—the right to vote, to serve on juries, to own property—are like touches of pregnancy; they cannot be aborted in mid-term. — So students and faculty on our campuses are being forced to examine the painful truth-women have been less than equal in all these aspects of University life and accomplishment. Both their self-images and their social images are fraught with doubt about their abilities, their natural capacities, their biology, their intelligence. their lack of aggressiveness, innovativeness, leadership...and what not. The liberationists among the women have a two-fold task: both to liberate their own sex and to free the minds of-men who themselves have been victimized by cultural and social stereotypes. The path is not easy. It is strewn with institutional inertia and resistance, pious platitudes and endless rationalizations for eschewing changes. The dismal figures which paint a picture of pervasive inequities in hiring practices and employment opportunities, of female student enrollment limited to circumscribed fields of knowledge and endeavor, and in graduate work, textbook, and curricular biases...must collectively remind women that change moves like the proverbial snail and comes into being with pain and suffering. Hopefully, women on campus will have the courage and the persistence to endure the conflicts of the seventies and to stand side by side with other civil libertarians until an equalitarian system of higher education is achieved. On this campus, we have reason to believe that faculty women, and an occasional maverick amongst the male faculty, will serve as models for their students in the defense of liberty and the achievement of a just educational system. 208 209 EDITH SHERMAN Plato proposed that the state should be run by its intellectual leaders, and that if it were, there would be happiness and fulfillment for all the citizens. If the management of institutions of higher education by faculties, students, and administrators be taken as an example of his proposal, it is quite obvious that his conclusion does not necessarily follow. Some colleges recently have undertaken curricular experiments which involve more intensive study of interrelated values and expressions rather than the broader surveys and sharply divided disciplines which have characterized many earlier curricular requirements. Changes which promote greater flexibility in educational approach are welcome but we may well remain sus- picious of any particular curricular proposal as “the best approach.” There are great variations in natural rhythms, seasons and styles which flow through different kinds of materials and persons. It may be relevant to reflect about the relations between education and curriculum. A curriculum should be the development of the means of education and some articulate vision of its possibility. It should provide the opportunity to learn how to learn, all the way through the mastery of incidents and details, to the connections and values on the other side of mastery. There is a Chinese notion that a special hell awaits those teachers who have wronged their pupils by undue leniency. Every curricular form, new or old, is in danger of letting the student off too easily by showing merely that he knows what the instructor set out to teach. One must push beyond teaching to discover how to learn, to appreciate, to judge. The teacher must seek to create a student who learns much more than the teacher knows. Some students, some thoughts take a long time to mature and need a slow and steady academic oven for their incubation. Others flourish under the superfertilized. hot-house environment of intensive and interrelated studies. Still others may respond best to a One-A-Day approach. No curriculum is itself an education; it is at best the means for initiating a lifetime of more effective learning. 210 JAMES A. KIRK On November 27, 1862 the Rocky Mountain News, in what was then the Colorado Territory, reported as follows: We understand a board of trustees, composed of the solid men of Denver, has been organized to superintend the erection of a seminary building in which our youth may find proper facilities for an academic education. It is proposed by the trustees, that the building shall be worthy of its object, and the school of a character which will make a pilgrimage to the States for the purpose of education, not only unnecessary but unpopular.’’ That single seminary building for which subscriptions were sought over one hundred years ago has been replaced by some fifty physical facilities composing the University campus in 1972. Moreover, the pilgrimage to the States has been reversed with over eighty percent of the University’s enrollment coming from outside the state of Colorado. The concerns of the enterprise, however, remain basically the same: namely a commitment to the conservation, dissemination and extension of significant human knowledge coupled with con- tinuous critical evaluation of the validity of that knowledge. Furthermore, the University has assumed the obligation to provide those opportunities whereby its students may not only gain knowledge and competence, but also the spiritual and moral growth to use such knowledge humanely. — The implementation of these concerns is the responsibility of the community of men and women, whose talents, ideas, know how, dedication. and desire constitute the spirit and drive of the institution. The daily interaction of students and faculty provides the ferment which catalyzes the processes of learning and creative research. The success of the enterprise is dependent upon the ability and will of its people to experiment, to be responsive to new possibilities, to discard old ways when new approaches prove more effective, and above all, to maintain the virtue of patience, a rare commodity at present, so that the evolution of the University continues to proceed with the stability worthy of its object” envisioned by those “solid men in 1862. 212 I have been asked to “comment on the status of women instructors in the University.” Indeed, instructor, the lowest academic rank in a University, is more descriptive of women's status at the University of Denver than the word professor. Almost eighty percent of the instructors, but only ten percent of the full professors are women. Women make up more than forty percent of the student body, but with the exception of one member of the Board of Trustees and one Dean (School of Librarianship), not one woman is found in the highest decision-making bodies of the University. Of the numerous academic departments and divisions, only one (Philosophy) is headed by a woman. — There are no female faculty members in the Colleges of Law, and Engineering, none teaching in the Graduate School of International Studies, and only six women of the fifty-three faculty members are in the College of Business Administration. From an economist’s point of view, this refusal to utilize more educated women in administrative and professorial capacities represents a deplorable waste and misuse of trained and talented human resources. — The position of women faculty at the University? Unsatisfactory—in any terms. 214 215 DORIS M. DRURY American higher education is in a period of curricular experiments and new programs which are unequaled both in number and diversity in its history. Some of the programs are fads designed to attract publicity and dollars, some are survival techniques, and some are imaginative attempts to improve the teaching-learning climate. Paradoxically, these programs arc occurring because, and in spite nf severe economic constraints. — The major task of the University of Denver in the years just ahead will be to formulate its role and scope within a realistic assessment of its financial parameters. I am convinced that utilization of our resources can be vastly improved to provide increasingly stimulating educational experiences for students. An innovation with great potential is the new humanities program at the University. The emphasis on larger blocks of concentrated study is, in part, a reaction against the fragmentation of knowledge which confronts students in the traditional curriculum offerings. The block approach provides greater flexibility in utilizing a variety of teaching-learning techniques, encourages faculty to integrate their disciplines with other disciplines in a broader context, and allows students considerable individual initiative. Significantly, the structure can be operated eventually within the same resource constraints as the traditional curriculum. The new humanities program has implications for all of our undergraduate programs, and its most compelling advantage is that an alternative learning format can be provided for an increasingly diverse student body. — Like many innovations, the new program will have a group of harsh critics and a larger group of those who are indifferent. Attitudes toward the program will have a direct effect on its quality. Hopefully, it will generate excitement, intellectual community, and new insights and appreciations on the part of students and faculty. Thus, it may assist in identifying a unique role for the University. 217 WILLIAM ADRIAN I find that I make many assumptions about the University of Denver and my personal involvement in it. Five come to mind as being those most important. First, our aim should be to assist students to increasingly assume greater responsibility for their own education; the excitement and enjoyment of learning must become a style of life if it is to continue after students leave the campus. — Second, we must have a fundamental commitment to excellence both in our own professional work and that which we require of our students; only in this way can we communicate the type of self-imposed standards that students, as novice craftsmen, must comprehend and strive to meet. — Third, we must be intellectually honest with those students who would distort our mission with pleas for technicians' licenses. emotional baths or “political parades ; a liberal education must not be designed to fit career niches established by other institutions with different and highly specialized purposes. Fourth, learning is not restricted to the few hours spent daily in classrooms. Student subcultures can effectively neutralize or be highly supportive of the standards and efforts made by faculty. Fifth, we must have a firm commitment to continuous experimentation with every facet of the teaching-learning process, both in the classroom and out. — Given this context I view any specific innovation never as a panacea, but simply as something to be tried and then evaluated in terms of these and other considerations. For example, students do need oppor- tunities to concentrate their efforts, such as is now possible with the new humanities program. At times such concentration should have as its focus a particular problem, issue, or historical event. At other times concentration within the boundaries of an academic discipline is equally desirable. The issue is not so much how the boundaries are drawn, but whether or not they serve to excite and challenge the student so that an increased sense of intellectual competence is both subjectively experienced and objectively demonstrable. However, I don’t believe that a firm competence in the logic, structure, and rhetoric of a discipline necessarily results in permanent blindness. Inter-disciplinary relationships may be comprehended at new levels of depth, once a firm understanding of a single discipline has been gained. —-Similarly, modifications of non-classroom structures such as dormitories must be evaluated in terms of consequences realized. And it appears to me that here we have a good deal to learn. Thus, we should be highly responsive to experimentation and thorough evaluation. Placing students who declare majors in close proximity may stimulate intellectual discourse, or it may simply result in books with identical covers being concentrates spatially. At this point I find myself less concerned with the narrowness in thought that may result from students experiencing excessive intellectual stimulation along disciplinary lines, than I am with the neutralization of faculty efforts toward building increased commitment to serious scholarly work. 218 THOMAS E. DRABEK 219 Perhaps in no other area is the lower status of women in our society more dramatically apparent than in higher education—a realm allegedly devoted to fairness and objectivity. The existing pattern of discrimination is evident when one examines the numerous studies, research, and publications on the status of academic women. Collectively, these studies provide a significant current assessment of our standing. The validity of these findings is confirmed by the cases won by a growing number of women within universities who are filing formal charges of sex discrimination with the federal government under provisions for compliance with federal contracts. These studies, coupled with legal action, could potentially compel 80% of the nations institutions of higher learning to revise their employment practices. — Statistics indicate that the University of Denver is following a national sex discrimination trend in employment. Only a cursory glance at the record will show this. In the bastions of higher education there is no other beam in the structure of the male ego more tightly morticed in place than the myth about a woman's place, her proper status in the academic community, and her abilities. Most of the women have been relegated to the lower professorial ranks, an assistant to—’ position, infrequent important committee assignments, usually with salaries commensurate with the myth. 220 The primary reason that the new program in the humanities has been awaited with such great anticipation at the University of Denver is that it has the potential of rapidly bringing greater balance of curricular offerings in the humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences. The sciences and the social sciences in the past, had access to significant funding from a variety of sources; unfortunately. the humanities have, with few exceptions, been denied significant funding. It is hoped that this new program and the many opportunities which surround it will affect not only undergraduate education; but also graduate education; not only the humanities, but the sciences and social sciences; not only the College of Arts and Sciences, but the other colleges and professional schools; not only students, but also faculty and administration; not only the University of Denver, but the larger community and other institutions as well. Students and faculty alike will be given the opportunity of dealing intellectually with depth and breadth concurrently. The freshman student will have the opportunity to concentrate academically in a way that has not been possible in most institutions. Hopefully, this intensive experience will lead to further interest, curiosity, and involvement. This was the hope and the motivation that led to the search for this kind of funding. 222 A professional School must have an identity and existence of its own, but it must have its basic being as a part of a family: the larger university community—an island and yet “a part of the main. For the Graduate School of Social Work, both of these conditions have existed over the forty years of its life at the University of Denver. More often the former condition has been predominant, in part through the School’s own choosing and in part through the presence of many territorial imperatives. a not uncommon fact of university life on this planet! Sanction, material sustenance, and resources come from the larger community. But equally life giving, yes. more than equally vital is a shared conviction that each of our islands is connected to common causes and to societal potentials. Such a conviction becomes a causeway over which we all would travel regularly for exchange of intellectual sustenance and for inter-territorial efforts in our common educational enterprises. Preparation for people professions can then be the imperative to which the Graduate School of Social Work brings its considerable contributions, but magnified and extended by colleagues, both student and faculty from other people-centered units in the larger community. Can we act now on such a Conviction? The task approached in tenderness and faith is to hold up unquestioningly, without choice and without fear, the rescued fragment before all eyes in the light of a sincere mood. It is to show' its vibration, its colour, its form; and through its movement, its form, and its colour, reveal the substance of its truth—disclose its inspiring secret: the stress and passion within the core of each convincing moment.
