College of Arts and Sciences To discipline the mind and in so doing, to set it free, is the purpose of a liberal arts college. A platform is established from which the student can gain experience and so function better in a democratic framework. The College of Arts and Sciences, headed by Dean Perdue, contains 26 schools and departments joined to attain this common goal. This year, the college is launching a program to educate and train future college teachers. Aided by a $210,000 Ford Foundation grant, the three-year plan, beginning in the junior year and culminating in an M.A. degree, is designed to meet the nations teacher shortage. Dr. James E.
