In her early days of sfruggle, when odds were againsf her, she could answer wifh Sieyes, when asked wha? he did during fhe French Revoluiion, l lived. Wha+ changes have faken place since I864l Denver, a village of a few rhousand, has become 'l'he meiropolis of 'Phe Rocky Mouniain region, and our sfafe has become rich and popu- lous: fhe Pony Express has given way +o 1'he felegraph line, ihe rele- phone, and fhe radio: fhe pioneer wagon-oxen drawn-has found space in fhe museum, and in i+s place speeds fhe lighfning-like siream- liner, and fhe mofor-driven aufomobile: where buffalo roamed fhe roll- ing plains are fo be 'Found irrigafed and well-filled farms and blooded and prize-winning herds: fhe log and sod school houses find rhemselves surpassed by beaufiful brick and cemenf sfrucfures: and rhe rough 'Furnishings of fhe fronfier have given place 1'o 1'he mosi' modern con- veniences. The fronfier has disappeared. And fhaf greai' expanse of virgin and mounfainous counrry, lawless and ungoverned, has given place fo a complefe union of s+a+es. Bur such changes always follow in 'rhe wake of a courageous and pioneering sfock. The ideals and aspirafions of our founders, feebly embodied in fhe 1'wo-s'I'ory sfrucfure a+ +he corner of Fourfeenrh and Arapahoe Sfreefs, now find visible expression in rhe Universiry schools and buildings: and ihe educarional desires of rhe people of our greai' commonwealrh are sarisfied by many insrifufions of higher learning.
