Status of Endowment Campaign By the Chancellor F.-XSlil.l2FSl,Y for more than twenty years the University of Denver has been engaged in campaigns for adequate endow- ment. All the objectives have been attained in all these campaigns hitherto. The total amount of gifts secured during all these years aggregates about one and one-half millions of dollars, First we had debts which aggregated one-third of a million dollars. These debts were all extinguished by Christmas in 1906. Then we came into a building era and placed four new buildings on the campus. .-Xll of them are paid for in full. liuring this period when we were erecting new buildings we naturally came into debt again on current expense account. These debts were finally extinguished three years ago, in February of 1917. ln the present endowment campaign to meet the conditions of a gift from the General Education Board we are making progress every day. lVe are now 129th February, 102045 a trilie more than 3100.000 nearer the goal than we were at the first of September in 1919. XYe need yet to secure a total of 3137.000 to reach the objective now in view. Of this amount 32123000 are necessary to meet the conditions of the balance of our expectation from the General Education Board. which is S-111700. Then we need to secure Sl-1.000 additional to extinguish the balance of our debts on war account. Hearty co-operation all around will make it possible to reach these objectives by the date of our Commencement. 10th june. lf we cannot secure hearty co-operation, then it will take a long, long time to make an end of these anxieties. During every year in the life of the University from the beginning we have had a distressing deficit. That means that we put an immense amount of money into students where we secure only a fraction of these expenses from the students in tuition. The deficit in every year has ranged from 350.000 as a maximum down to 515,000 or slightly less in the years when the institution had a small student body. XYlien the present objective is reached the total amount of productive endowment will slightly exceed three-quarters of a million dollars. 1221
